Neither the glow of TV lights nor the backing of Donald Trump were apparently able to secure victory for the highest-profile TV figure seeking elected office in the midterms.

While control of the House and Senate, somewhat surprisingly, still hung in the balance Wednesday morning (November 9), Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. John Fetterman, a Democrat, had been declared the winner by multiple news outlets for the open Senate seat against Dr. Mehmet Oz, the Republican candidate.

The race had been essentially a dead heat in the polls, but with Oz appearing to gain momentum toward the end of the race.

Oprah Winfrey, whose talk show launched Oz's own syndicated show, wound up endorsing Fetterman.

In Arizona, Democrat Katie Hobbs was leading former KSAZ Phoenix news anchor and current Trump cheerleader Kari Lake, who has branded her former profession fake news pushing "lies and propaganda," but the election was still too close to call.

In New Mexico, incumbent Democratic Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham was re-elected, defeating another Republican candidate formerly of the TV news ranks, former KRQE Albuquerque meteorologist Mark Ronchetti.

One former broadcaster who fared better was incumbent Republican Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar. Salazar, whose media career included stints at MegaTV, CNN Latino, Telemundo and WDFL Miami, retained her seat, defeating state Sen. Annette Taddeo. ■

The Republican Senate primary race in Pennsylvania is still too close to call, with TV doctor Mehmet Oz with a slight lead at 402,629 votes to David McCormick‘s 401,133 votes. Kathy Barnette trailed with 315,027 votes. All tallies are according to the state election results as of Wednesday morning (May 18).

In 2009, Oprah Winfrey's Harpo Productions launched a syndicated talk show featuring Oz after he had made frequent appearances on her own show. Oz stepped away from the Sony Pictures Television series in 2021 when he decided to run for the Senate seat being vacated by Republican Pat Toomey, who is retiring.

Oz is no stranger to Congress, having testified on the Hill back in 2014 about bogus weight-loss claims after the FTC filed suit against Pure Green Coffee for marketing dietary supplements online as a quick way to lose weight without diet or exercise. The coffee had been promoted on The Dr. Oz Show.

At the time, Oz said he wanted to be part of the solution. He conceded that his flowery language — using terms like “magic” and “miracle” had made the Federal Trade Commission’s job harder, but that he had toned it down, though not his passion for some of the products he promoted.

Former President Donald Trump had stumped for Oz in the race, the outcome of which in the general election could determine whether Republicans gain control of the Senate. The winner will go on to face Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. John Fetterman in the fall general election.

The primary race has also been viewed as a key test of the strength of a Trump endorsement. ■

“What’s for dinner?” is the key question that Sony Pictures Television’s new first-run strip, The Good Dish, aims to answer for audiences.

Five days a week, hosts Daphne Oz, Top Chef’s Gail Simmons and Food Network’s Jamika Pessoa get together to share recipes, offer tips and interview celebrities. The one-hour show is an expanded version of a weekly segment that has aired during Sony Pictures Television’s Dr. Oz for the past several years.

“Many people, if they cook at all, have three recipes they make all the time,” Oz said. “That is the first and foremost thing we’re going to answer: What’s for dinner? We’re going to provide viewers with a simple, elevated family supper that you are going to want to make and they are going to want to eat.”

As the mom of four young children, Oz knows of what she speaks. She began her cooking career early, having written The Dorm Room Diet while she was attending Princeton University. She went on a book tour and spoke on college campuses to promote that effort. In 2011, she began starring as a co-host on ABC’s The Chew, where she appeared for six years. She departed that show the year before ABC canceled it in 2018.

“The Dorm Room Diet came about because I was an overweight kid in a family full of health nuts,” said Oz, the oldest of Dr. Mehmet Oz’s four children. “I love cooking. I love the delicious product of that effort, how you can have an adventure in your kitchen and the conversations all of that fosters. I have always been intrigued by the idea of women gathering in the kitchen. The conversations that flow from gathering around a delicious meal are a beautiful way to connect.

“That love is what drew me to food initially,” Oz continued. “The continual ability to learn is what keeps me there.”

Those are the ideas that form the core of The Good Dish, which is taking The Dr. Oz Show’s time slots on TV stations across the country. Dr. Oz was spun off from The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2009 and ran for nearly 13 seasons. Sony had been offering The Good Dish to stations as a first-run strip since 2019 but ran into challenges clearing it due to a lack of real estate, with the ABC- and NBC-owned stations instead picking up Tamron Hall and Kelly Clarkson, respectively. And then, of course, the onset of the pandemic in 2020 changed the picture for everyone.

A Show Finds Its Moment

“There’s a lot of pressure in the business for groups to take internal product, particularly on the affiliate side,” Flory Bramnick, executive VP, distribution, Sony Pictures Television, said. “It wasn’t like we couldn’t get the show sold, but we really thought we had something bigger than that. We wanted to wait for the right opportunity. We owed it to our stations, our viewers and our advertisers to really wait for the right moment and the right moment came along.”

When Dr. Oz decided to depart his eponymous show and run for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania, an immediate need opened up. Oz wrapped its run on Friday, January 14, and The Good Dish premiered on Martin Luther King Day, Monday, January 17.

“As soon as we needed to go, there was this symphony,” Bramnick said. “Everybody pulled together and they pulled together immediately. That included the talent, [executive producers] Amy Chairo and Stacy Rader on the production side, Holly Jacobs in development, Zack Hernandez in distribution and business affairs, finance and marketing. It was hard and scary at times. We didn’t know exactly how things were going to turn out. But the station partners were fabulous, really fabulous, and the advertisers have been fabulous. Everyone had their oars in the water and they pulled it off.”

The Good Dish will rely on the chemistry of its hosts as they interact in the kitchen with celebrity guests like Marie Osmond (r.). (Image credit: Sony Pictures Television)

Besides Oz, the show features Simmons, who comes from Top Chef and Food & Wine magazine and is classically trained, and Pessoa, who has appeared frequently on Food Network and focuses on Caribbean fare. Each of the three women comes from an entirely different food background, and the show draws from all three.

“Gail is our brain,” Oz said. “She always knows the classical way to make something or how to fix something that flopped. Jamika is a veteran of television and caterer by training. She has this incredible ability to make food fun and give it an entertaining spin, whether you’re cooking for a crowd, making something bite-sized or giving it a finishing touch.”

The Good Dish is executive-produced in New York City by Amy Chiaro and Stacy Rader, who seem to have glided smoothly from Dr. Oz to The Good Dish without skipping a beat.

“We had a few weeks to make the full turn,” Chiaro said. “Even before Sony knew 100% that we would launch, I knew I needed to start a production team. We started laying out segments because there was nothing to lose by us just getting started.”

Off to a Running Start

The Good Dish had a huge advantage in getting up and running quickly in that it already had everything it needed — talent, crew, stage, set — in place.

“We already had the infrastructure,” said Rader, who previously served as a producer for Food Network. “It was all there waiting for us. We weren’t turning on the lights for the first time. I see great opportunities for extensions into home, lifestyle, beauty, fashion. [The hosts] bring a lot of varied interests.”

The key to the show’s success, Chiaro said, is the chemistry of its hosts. “I think this is a show that will be fun to be with. They are all super warm and have amazing chemistry with each other. This is a nice break for people and a great opportunity for some ‘me time.’ ”

Stations are paying Sony the same cash license fee plus barter that they paid for Dr. Oz, according to station sources. Dr. Oz was due to air for one more season, through 2022-23, but Sony will need to renew The Good Dish if it’s going to stay on the air after this season.

In its premiere week, The Good Dish averaged a 0.4 live-plus-same-day national household rating, according to Nielsen. All syndicated shows face preemptions due to sports, live news conferences and other reasons, but The Good Dish saw two days of preemptions in its premiere week, causing Nielsen to break its Monday premiere-day rating out of the show’s weekly average. ■

Warner Bros.’ The Ellen DeGeneres Show is ending after this season, its 19th, after serving as the afternoon lynchpin of NBC stations for nearly two decades. NBCUniversal’s conflict talker, Maury, is ending production this spring and following the path of NBCU’s Jerry Springer and CBS Media Ventures’ Judge Judy by going into repeats on TV stations across the country. Dr. Oz is ending its run prematurely as the show’s host enters the U.S. Senate race in Pennsylvania. Wendy Williams has had to fill Williams’ slot with guest hosts all season long, with Williams out on an extended and indeterminate medical leave. If our station partners want to stay with it, we’ll stay with it.”

Still, all of that potential change means there’s more room for new entrants on TV stations than there has been in years.

The biggest name in the development mix is former American Idol contestant and Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson, who is starring in a talk show produced by Warner Bros. and the executive producers of Ellen. Warner Bros. has not officially confirmed the show is in development but several TV station executives said they have seen the pitch and liked it.

While NBC seems like a likely spot for a Jennifer Hudson talker because of how
it might pair with NBCUniversal’s music-and-variety-focused The Kelly Clarkson Show, also starring an Idol alum, Fox is the group with space and flexibility. Fox, which only airs two hours of primetime per night and owns duopoly stations in many markets, has plenty of room to fill.

Wendy Williams postponed its premiere for a month before finally returning for season 13 on October 18 with an array of guest hosts, including actress Leah Remini and RuPaul gal pal and veteran deejay Michelle Visage; Sherri Shepherd; Whitney Cummings; Jerry Springer; Steve Wilkos; and a panel that includes former Page Six hosts Bevy Smith and Variety correspondent Elizabeth Wagmeister.

Thus far, Wendy Williams ratings don’t seem to be affected by the guest hosts, and Debmar-Mercury likes the opportunity it’s getting to test potential stars of new talk shows. Shepherd, a former co-host of The View and host of Fox’s Dish Nation, seems to be resonating with viewers.

“We could say ‘woe is me’ with Wendy out sick, or we could take advantage of the fact that we have a live show on which we’re putting guest hosts that could potentially host new talk shows for us,” Mort Marcus, co-president of Debmar Mercury, said.

“It’s an interesting test that you couldn’t afford to do if you didn’t have an ongoing show,” Bernstein said.

Indeed, Cicha has long said he’d love to run ongoing test shows of several weeks each, but syndication economics typically forbid that. “I would love to take an unfavorable situation and turn it into something new that could work,” he said.

‘Dr. Oz’ Show Up in Air Amid Senate Campaign

As far as Dr. Oz goes, when Dr. Mehmet Oz announced his Senate run in Pennsylvania, Fox had to pull the show on WNYW New York and WTXF Philadelphia in order to avoid the FCC’s equal time rules, Fox Television Stations spokeswoman Erica Keane said. WNYW is carried by small cable operators in northeast Pennsylvania, making it susceptible to the rule.

For now, WTXF is filling Dr. Oz’s 2 p.m. ET slot with a repeat of the 9 a.m. hour of Good Day Philadelphia while WNYW is running The Real at 1 p.m. ET.

On December 13, Sony Pictures Television confirmed that a Dr. Oz spinoff, The Good Dish, would take that show’s place on stations in more than 90% of the country, including on Fox, Nexstar, Sinclair and Gray stations, while Dr. Oz will end January 14, 2022. The Good Dish — hosted by Oz’s daughter, Daphne, a former host of ABC’s The Chew and a judge on Fox’s MasterChef Junior; Top Chef’s Gail Simmons; and Food Network’s Jamika Pessoa — will premiere Monday, January 17, 2022. The Good Dish has aired as a regular segment on Dr. Oz and Sony has been shopping the concept in syndication for the past couple of years.

Fox also has picked up new game show Pictionary, hosted by Jerry O’Connell. The TV station group tested the show last summer in partnership with CBS Media Ventures. If Fox renews You Bet Your Life and 25 Words or Less, as expected, the group has a solid game block in progress. Fox has been gradually turning to day-and-date programming, magazines and game shows in prime access instead of sitcoms.

“The goal with shows like Pictionary and 25 Words or Less is that after we let all of these [off-network] comedies go, we need to keep trying these kinds of [smaller budget] shows because we are going to need them on the second stations and sometimes on the primary stations. NBCU is shopping a new conflict talker starring Maury guest host Karamo Brown that looks like it will launch this fall on the former Tribune stations now owned by Nexstar Media Group. Those stations have traditionally been the home of the NBCU conflict talkers, where they fill afternoons on such stations as KTLA Los Angeles.

“These shows are still resonating with viewers, so we are optimistic,” Sean O’Boyle, executive VP, general sales manager, NBCUniversal Domestic Television Distribution, said.

“We like Karamo for this lane,” Tracie Wilson, president, NBCUniversal Syndication Studios, said. “He embraces the edgier content. We’ve worked with him for a couple of years and he’s been on Maury quite a few times. We’re excited to build that genre a bit. We’re the leaders in it and it’s time for some fresh faces.”

NBCU also is in active development on several projects that the group isn’t ready to discuss yet and continues to make a business out of its off-net properties, including a repackaged version of Dateline and hour-long procedurals such as Dick Wolf’s Law & Order and Chicago franchises.

Also still in the mix is Drew Barrymore, should CBS successfully renew it on stations across the country for season three, and a talk show starring Niecy Nash that would be produced by James Corden’s production company. ■

However, due to Oz’s Senate run, the show must be pulled or else stations are in danger of triggering the FCC’s equal-time requirement, which mandates that stations give all candidates equal time on their stations. If Dr. Oz was airing for 44 or so minutes per day on stations, giving all other candidates that much daily time would be untenable. Fox-owned stations that aired Dr. Oz in New York and Pennsylvania pulled the show on Dec. 1 after Oz announced his run just after Thanksgiving.

In the Thanksgiving week ended Nov 28, the last week national syndication ratings were available from Nielsen Media Research, Dr. Oz averaged a 0.6 live plus same day national household rating, up 20% from the prior week’s season low.

Also: Syndication Ratings: Thanksgiving Serves Up Lower Ratings for Most Shows

Dr. Mehmet Oz first became known to daytime TV watchers as a regular guest and medical expert on The Oprah Winfrey Show. Winfrey and her production company, Harpo, spun the show off into its own syndicated talk show in 2009.

The Good Dish grew out of weekly segments on Dr. Oz and will discuss trends, recipes, shortcuts and tips while helping viewers figure out what’s for dinner.

“Audiences have been loving what Daphne, Gail and Jamika have been serving up during their weekly segments on The Dr. Oz Show for years. We have long believed The Good Dish would make an excellent stand-alone series and are delighted to be able to deliver this fresh take on the cooking genre to our station partners and their viewers across the country,” Zack Hernandez, senior VP and general sales manager, U.S. syndication sales, Sony Pictures Television, said in a statement.

“There is no better time for a show like The Good Dish,” Amy Chiaro, executive producer and Stacy Rader, co-executive producer, said in a co-statement. “Daphne, Gail and Jamika know how to make food accessible with the ability to seamlessly deliver home, lifestyle and trending content. These incredible women will make you laugh, enjoy cooking again and make your life just a little easier. It’s the most fun you can have in the kitchen without having to do the dishes.”

The Good Dish is produced by ZoCo Productions and is distributed by Sony Pictures Television.

Sony Pictures Television’s Dr. Oz recovered 20% to a 0.6 after tumbling to a new season low in the prior week.

Dr. Oz has an uncertain prognosis after Fox-owned TV stations WTXF Philadelphia and WNYW New York pulled the show on Wednesday, Dec. 1, after host Dr. Mehmet Oz announced he was running for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania.

Disney’s Live with Kelly and Ryan, which eased 6% to a 1.6, topped the talkers and has now led the category 23 times in the past 29 weeks, including five ties with CBS Media Ventures’ Dr. Phil. Among daytime’s key demographic of women 25-54, Live tied Dr. Phil at a 0.6, followed by Kelly Clarkson and Ellen DeGeneres, which each were at a 0.4.

Dr. Phil, which had been first for the past three weeks, dropped 21% to a new season-low 1.5.

Warner Bros.’ Ellen DeGeneres in its 19th and final season was the only talk show in the top three to avoid a decline, holding its ground at a 1.0 and matching its season high.
CBS Television Distribution’s The Drew Barrymore Show debuted in the week ended Sept. 20 to a 0.7 live plus same day household rating, according to Nielsen Media Research, making it the third-highest talk premiere since 2017 behind both of 2019’s rookies: NBCUniversal’s Kelly Clarkson and Disney’s Tamron Hall.

Premiering during the pandemic without the benefit of an in-studio audience, Drew faces a much more challenging environment than either Clarkson or Hall, and in general, it’s increasingly difficult to gather an audience in daytime on linear TV. Additionally, the show was preempted at least 19 times in the country’s top 63 markets during the week.

Overall, Disney’s Live with Kelly and Ryan topped the talkers, breaking a tie with CTD’s Dr. Phil with a steady 1.9, holding 100% of its premiere-week audience. Among daytime’s key demographic of women 25-54, Live also led at a 0.9.

Dr. Phil, with its 19th season premiere, dipped 5% to a 1.8.

NBCU’s Maury came in third with a 1.0 for the seventh straight week. NBCU’s Steve Wilkos followed with a 0.9 for the eighth week in a row, tying CTD’s Rachael Ray, which rolled out its new season and rallied 13%.

Warner Bros.’ embattled Ellen DeGeneres eroded 11% during the week to a new series-low 0.8, down 56% from the same week last year.

National ratings for Ellen’s new season, which didn’t begin until Sept. 21, will not be available until next week. However, in the 56 metered markets, Ellen’s season premiere, which opened with an apology from DeGeneres about the reported toxic work environment at the show that bears her name, opened even with last year in households at a 2.0 rating/6 share weighted metered market average on Monday, Sept. 21. The show’s ratings steadily declined every day after that, eventually losing a total of 45% between Monday and Friday, ending at a 1.1/4. DeGeneres was absent on Friday and her former deejay and now co-executive producer Stephen “Twitch” Boss filled in.

Across the five days, Ellen averaged a 1.5 rating/5 share, up 36% from its lead in but down 25% from its year-ago time periods

Related: Ellen DeGeneres Opens Season 18 With an Apology

Disney’s Tamron Hall launched its sophomore season under new executive producer Candi Carter with a 33% gain to a nine-week high 0.8. The big move was ignited by a headline-making exclusive with failed Florida gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum.

Related: Five Spot: Candi Carter, Executive Producer, ‘Tamron Hall’

NBCU’s Kelly Clarkson, which also had not premiered yet, held its ground at a 0.8, tying Ellen and Tamron. Debmar-Mercury’s Wendy Williams, still in reruns, stayed at a 0.7 for the eighth straight week. Sony Pictures Television’s Dr. Oz, which premiered season 12, was stable at its series-low 0.6 for a tenth consecutive week.

Related: Fox Renews ‘Dr. Oz’ Through 2022-23

CTD’s The Doctors, which premiered with new host Dr. Ian Smith on TKTK, lost 25% to a new series-low 0.3, tying Warner Bros.’ The Real, which remained at a 0.3 for a third straight week.

Related: Dr. Ian Smith Is the New Host of CTD’s ‘The Doctors’

NBCU’s out-of-production syndicated run of Jerry Springer stood pat at its series-low 0.2 for a second straight week.

CTD’s Judge Judy, got off to a good start in the show’s 25th and final season, leading all of syndication and overruling all objections to rise 6% to an eight-week high 5.7.

CTD’s Hot Bench, which has been moved on several CBS owned stations to make way for Drew Barrymore, eased 11% to a 1.7. Warner Bros.’ People’s Court slipped 8% to a 1.2. MGM/Orion’s Personal Injury Court remained at a 0.3, tying Trifecta’s Protection Court, which jumped 50% to a 0.3 from a 0.2.

CTD’s Entertainment Tonight and Inside Edition remained tied for the magazine lead in the week that led up to the Primetime Emmys, with both shows improving 5% to a 2.2. NBCU’s Access Hollywood had the group’s biggest increase, adding 13% to a 0.9.

Related: 'Access Hollywood' Turns 25

Warner Bros.’ TMZ was unchanged at a 0.8 for the seventh straight week.
