After 17 years at CNN I would have thought that someone in management would have the decency to tell me directly,” Lemon said in the tweet. “At no time was I ever given any indication that I would not be able to continue to do the work I have loved at the network.”

On the CNN Communications (@CNNPR) Twitter account, the network said Lemon’s statement was “inaccurate. He was offered an opportunity to meet with management but instead released a statement on Twitter.”

“CNN and Don have parted ways,” another CNN Communications tweet said. “Don will forever be a part of the CNN family, and we thank him for his contributions over the past 17 years. We wish him well and will be cheering him on in his future endeavors.”

CNN CEO Chris Licht said in a statement that Lemon “will forever be a part of the CNN family, and we thank him for his contributions over the past 17 years.”

In February 2023, Lemon was off the air following derogatory comments he made toward older women during a discussion about Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley.

Lemon’s departure comes on the heels of Fox News Channel’s decision to let go of popular primetime host Tucker Carlson.

pic.twitter.com/8PyLqvS0d7April 24, 2023

Combined with CNN’s resources and global newsgathering capabilities, we will offer a smart, bold and refreshing way to start the day.”

Moving Lemon from his hour-long primetime slot also continues a trend of eliminating commentary that was critical of Donald Trump, making the network more centrist or conservative.

“The last eight years have been an incredible ride. I’ve had the opportunity to work with one of the best show teams in the business, but it’s time to shake things up. I am so appreciative of the Don Lemon Tonight team, my wonderful, loyal viewers and everyone who has believed in me,” Lemon said. “I was honestly floored when Chris Licht asked me to do this and I’m honored by his belief in me. It’s going to be a thrill to take on this challenge with Poppy and Kaitlan. I’ll get to work with two of my dearest friends. Set your alarms folks, because we’re going to have a lot of fun.”

Harlow is currently an anchor of CNN Newsroom from 9-11 a.m. ET and host of the CNN podcast Boss Files. Both will assume new roles at the network later this year, CNN said. ■

But let me tell you, I’m here for it and I’m ready to live up to that challenge.”

Lemon, the only African-American journalist currently hosting a primetime cable news show, said that right now is the most important time in recent history to be a journalist to serve as a reliable check and balance to often misleading and unreliable information coming from all corners of the political spectrum. He added it’s also a perilous time for reporters, pointing to the recent disappearance and suspected murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

“In the context of this new world order of dramatic political, social, and unparalleled technological change, the role of media has never been more important, and it's also never been more dangerous,” Lemon said. "Foreign reporters in war zones, as well as domestic reporters and journalists like me in war zones of our own here at home, are facing angry people and the threats of violence.”

Lemon also said traditional news media outlets also face threats from social media, which often posts inaccurate news and information. “It is incumbent upon the owners and managers of those sites like Facebook and Twitter to do their due diligence, and it’s incumbent upon you and the rest of America to make sure that they do it,” he said.
