The linear version of Discovery and Joanna and Chip Gaines's Magnolia Network debuts today (January 5) as a rebrand of the DIY Network. 

The service will officially take over the feed of Discovery’s DIY Network at 9 p.m., according to network officials. The linear channel will join Magnolia Network's digital on-demand offering currently streaming on Discovery Plus.

The rebranded service will feature episodes from original series such as Fixer Upper: Welcome Home, Magnolia Table with Joanna Gaines, Restoration Road with Clint Harp and Home Work, according to network officials.

DIY shows Maine Cabin Masters, Barnwood Builders, Restoring Galveston and Bargain Mansions will remain on the service, said Magnolia Network officials.

“It wasn’t long ago that watching TV meant time together as a family. It was a place where people of all ages could gather and be informed, entertained, and inspired by the kind of honest, authentic programming that brings people closer,” said Chip and Joanna Gaines in a statement. “That’s what we’ve set out to build with Magnolia Network, and we’ve been amazed by the stories and storytellers we’ve found, people whose lives are living proof that our world is full of beauty, hope, courage, and curiosity. We can’t wait to see these stories brought to life on cable, and we’re hopeful about the impact it might have—to help reclaim the best of what television can be.”

Magnolia Network, the joint venture between Discovery and Chip and Joanna Gaines, will launch digitally on Discovery Plus in July and as a linear channel in 2022, Discovery announced Thursday.

After several starts and stops on launch dates for Magnolia Network, the announcement finally provides a firm debut date for the much-anticipated service, which will take over Discovery’s DIY Network when it hits cable lineups in January 2022. 

Starting in July, Discovery Plus -- as well as the Magnolia app -- will offer more than 150 hours of unscripted content across the home, food, gardening and design genres, said Discovery. Several Magnolia Network shows have already debuted on Discovery Plus, including Magnolia Table with Joanna Gaines.

The Gaines’ Fixer Upper series will also be available at launch on Discovery Plus, along with such shows as the complete first seasons of Fixer Upper: Welcome Home and Magnolia Table with Joanna Gaines, plus new series Growing Floret, The Lost Kitchen, Homegrown, Family Dinner and Restoration Road with Clint Harp.

The Magnolia app will also provide discovery Plus subscribers with workshop content featuring classes from some talented makers and artisans, according to Discovery.

Altice USA said it is making live and on demand content from several networks available to its Optimum and Suddenlink customers through April 22 in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Beginning March 27, Hallmark Channel, Hallmark Drama, Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, Cooking Channel, DIY Network, Science Channel, and Discovery Family will be available to its customers through April 22nd at no additional cost.

Fixer Upper stars Chip and Joanna Gaines will partner with Discovery Inc. on a new cable network and streaming network as part of a media joint venture between the two parties announced Wednesday.

The as-yet-named multi-platform media company will feature a linear television network -- replacing the current DIY Network -- and TV Everywhere app beginning in Summer 2020, with a subscription streaming service to debut at a later date. The network’s programming will center around topics including community, home, garden, food, wellness, entrepreneurialism and design, according to Discovery.

HGTV president Allison Page will serve as president of the new joint venture, with the Gaines’ serving as chief creative officers. Chip and Joanna Gaines starred in HGTV’s breakout home renovation series Fixer Upper from 2013 to 2018. Episodes from the series will be featured on the new channel, said network officials.

“Chip and Joanna Gaines have become trusted, household names since the debut of Fixer Upper and through this joint venture, Discovery is proud to extend our relationship with them,” said David Zaslav, CEO, Discovery in a statement. “They’ve got authenticity and relatability, that special something that is so difficult in our business to find. Two Scripps Networks outlets are bolstering their real-estate programming, giving a third-season order to Egypt Sherrod-hosted Flipping Virgins on HGTV and scheduling a Tuesday, July 11 (10 p.m. ET/PT) debut for Rustic Renovation on DIY.

Flipping Virgins has property ace Sherrod guiding novice house-flippers through the vagaries of buying, renovating and selling homes, and it will return for 13 more episodes, HGTV said.

Rustic Renovation features a pair of brothers, Chase and Brock Jurgensen, a licensed contractor and talented woodworker, respectively, taking run-down family cabins in Minnesota and turning them into stylish living spaces with rustic charm. (Scripps networks have a thing for brothers as hosts.) The first episode sees the brothers renovating a 1950s era lakeside cabin that's been the same family for four generations.

DIY Network said it has ordered 26 more episodes (two seasons) of its series Barnwood Builders, episodes that will premiere this year. The Scripps Networks outlet said the series has attracted more than 3.6 million total viewers a month since it premiered in March 2015. 

The series is about Mark Bowe and his team of West Virginia master craftsmen, who "carefully deconstruct centuries-old barns and cabins to build stunning modern homes."

DIY Network picks up a second season of its popular home renovation series Nashville Flipped, scheduled to premiere in February 2017.

Contractor Troy Dean Shafer and his team peel back layers of bad renovations to reveal the original beauty of forgotten homes.

Shafer renovates these historic homes under a budget, tackling the years of neglect of each property. Wood-paneled walls, bad paint and worn carpeting are some of the challenges he and his team face.

HGTV, which just wrapped its best second quarter in network history, continues to expand its programming roster. More family-centric series about home renovation and house flipping have been cleared for production, including Five Day Flip, Vintage Flip and Nashville Flipped. DIY Network, another Scripps Networks Interactive outlet, coming off its most-watched second quarter (up 6% year over year), has ordered American Rehab: Utah and Amish Dream Homes (working title).

HGTV explores the latest trends in house flipping in three of the new series. Five Day Flip follows renovator Cherie Barber as she guts and remodels fixer uppers and puts them back on the market in only five days. In Vintage Flip, real estate expert and contractor Jessie Rodriguez and his wife Tina purchase dated homes and restore them with custom design features and architectural elements. Nashville Flipped features Troy Dean Shafer, the owner of a house-flipping business. During the series, Troy, his designer Alex and a team of contractors renovate historic homes in the heart of Nashville.

DIY's two new series follow families who renovate homes together. Amish Dream Homes features the Miller family, who work to balance their traditional cultural values and operate a construction business. In American Rehab: Utah, Andy and Candis Meredith (pictured) run a family business in which they purchase historic properties across the state and restore them to their original beauty for generations to come.

DIY Network’s new renovation series, The Shatner Project, stars William Statner as project manager for his own home remodel.

The show will center around Shatner and his wife Elizabeth as they work to transform their 1970's style home. The six-episode series is set to air Thursday, Oct. 23 at 10 p.m.

“I bought this house when I finished Star Trek. I jogged by it every day and thought it was beautiful,” Shatner said in a release. “One hundred years ago, the original home was a one-room hunting lodge. Over the decades, it was expanded into a family home and then I bought it in the 1970s.”

A designer and a construction crew will help the Shatners in the premiere episode, where they demolish the kitchen for a total overhaul.

Ellen DeGeneres has signed on as executive producer for a six-episode design competition series on HGTV, Scripps Networks revealed at its upfront event in New York. The series, Ellen’s Design Challenge, is produced in part by her production company, A Very Good Production, and scheduled to premiere in 2015. The show will feature six contestants designing and building furniture as they compete for a cash prize.  

“There has been a lot of dancing in our halls since we shared that we will be collaborating with Ellen,” Kathleen Finch, president, HGTV and DIY Network, said in a release. “When she talked to us about her love of buying and renovating homes, her personal passion for the creative process of furniture design emerged as something that she wanted to explore more. Since HGTV is the ultimate forum in this space, and since no other network can deliver an audience who is as enthusiastic as she is about the creative process, we just had to make it happen.”

Scripps Networks also detailed new series on Food Network, Cooking Channel and the DIY Network following Cablevision's decision to add the latter two networks to its Optimum TV lineup.

DIY has followed HGTV's lead by enlisting celebrity personalities to grow its “celebrity home rehab” franchise. The network will follow William Shatner’s home renovation in October’s premiere of The Shatner Project, and Daryl Hall’s renovation of an 18th-century Connecticut home will be featured in July’s premiere of Daryl’s Restoration Over-Hall. 

Food Network and Cooking Channel also look to increase their originals with 35 new series on the table for the upcoming year. 

“Increasing our development slate to satiate the audience demand for entertaining and informative programming has been our focus,” Brooke Johnson, president of Food Network & Cooking Channel, said in a release. “Food Network will be launching new shows we believe fans are hungry for while Cooking Channel offers an exciting complement of flavors and cuisines; all-in-all 2014 represents a year where we have something to offer for every taste.” 

New series on tap for Food Network’s prime time include Kitchen Casino, a cooking competition show hosted by Bill Rancic, and America’s Best Cook, a cooking competition show featuring Food Network chefs Cat Cora, Tyler Florence, Alex Guarnaschelli and Michael Symon. Rewrapped, the offshoot of junk food series Unwrapped, finds Joey Fatone hosting and Marc Summers serving as head judge as contestants incorporate classic snack items into new recipes. 

New series on Cooking Channel include Siba’s Table, which features Siba Mtongana exploring her native South Africa’s local cuisine, and Real Girl’s Kitchen with Haylie Duff, which offers an inside look at the actor and artist’s life. 

Food Network and Cooking Channel also plan to return over 30 popular series to the networks. 

New programming announcements continued at the Scripps Networks upfront event with the unveiling of a development slate of eight original series potentially for Travel Channel. The network greenlit eight pilots for production, including Breaking Borders, Guiding Alaska and Adventure Capitalists (all working titles). 

“This has been an exciting time where we’ve discovered a treasure trove of compelling storytellers and inspirational talent,” Ross Babbit, SVP of Programming & Development, Travel Channel, said in a release. “We’re excited to move ahead with our new development slate that not only spotlights a fresh group of authentic talent and experts in global locations, but also delivers an immersive travel entertainment experience.”
