Since then the unit has grown to become a global leader in standards-based digital content for K-12, transforming teaching and learning with award-winning digital textbooks, multimedia content, professional development, and the largest professional learning community of its kind. Discovery Education serves 4.5 million educators and over 50 million students and its services are in half of U.S. classrooms, 50% of all primary schools in the U.K., and more than 50 countries.

“This transaction represents an incredibly exciting opportunity for Discovery Education to accelerate its growth with Francisco Partners, while also maintaining its longstanding partnership with the Discovery Communications family,” said Discovery Education CEO Bill Goodwyn in a statement. “We are well positioned to continue investing in our market-leading products and services, and this investment allows us to further expand our reach and impact both domestically and around the world.”

Discovery Education’s current management team, led by Goodwyn, will operate the company as a standalone business upon the closing of the transaction.

“From its earliest days, education has been rooted in Discovery’s DNA and we are extremely proud of the world-class business that Bill and his team have built and the impact Discovery Education’s products and services have made in transforming student achievement,” said Discovery Communications chief development, distribution and legal officer Bruce Campbell in a statement. “This transaction allows Discovery to focus on driving value and growth across our core media businesses, while maintaining our strong commitment to Discovery Education and its mission to promote and inspire learning. We are excited for its next chapter with Francisco Partners.”

Discovery Education partners with administrators, teachers, students and like-minded organizations worldwide to create dynamic digital learning environments that support the success of all learners. By combining award-winning digital textbooks, or Discovery Education “Techbooks,” and best-in-class supplemental services such as Discovery Education Streaming and STEM Connect with sustained professional development resources, Discovery Education is inspiring student curiosity and empowering educators every day to reimagine teaching and learning.

“We are thrilled to partner with Bill and the entire Discovery Education team as the company embarks on its next stage of growth,” said Francisco Partners partner Jason Brein in a statement. “We are impressed by Discovery Education’s positive impact on student learning, and are excited to help support Discovery Education as it transforms teaching and learning around the globe.”

The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to occur in the first half of 2018.

“With this additional investment, Discovery Education will continue its laser-like focus on creating and delivering the innovative services today’s educators need to prepare students for success beyond the classroom,” added Dsicovery Education president K-12 Education Scott Kinney in a statement. “In the short term, our partners will see no change in their relationship with Discovery Education. However, long term, this new relationship tremendously enhances our ability to create the next generation of digital services and initiatives for educators worldwide.”

There’s nothing like seeing the joy on a student’s face as she walks her parents through a project she’s been working on at school, or the pride you see when another student explains how using dynamic digital content such as video and virtual experiments makes learning come alive for him.

At Eagle, we know it is imperative for students to have access to digital content through broadband Internet connections to make today’s classrooms more dynamic and engaging for students, as well as to help prepare students for success in tomorrow’s world – no matter the size or location of the community.

On April 30 Eagle Communications, in partnership with Schuyler Middle School and Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, jointly presented a special community night to demonstrate how educators at Schuyler Middle School in Schuyler, Neb., are using the power of broadband to create dynamic digital learning environments that engage area students and prepare them for success in college and careers.

The special evening featured a student project showcase, hands-on activities and interactive exploration stations demonstrating how digital content can support the success of today’s tech-savvy learners.

The exploration stations focused on three areas – Math, Science, Social Studies – and featured virtual labs, opportunities to create videos, and fun, problem-solving experiments.

Attendees also had the opportunity to learn about Eagle Communication’s commitment to the Eagle Connect 2 Compete (C2C) program. By offering Internet service at a reduced price to low-income families, Connect2Compete is closing the digital divide, helping communities across the country benefit from Internet connectivity.

You may ask: Why focus on Schuyler, Nebraska? It’s simple, really: Eagle is committed to enhancing the quality of life in the communities we serve by providing services and leveraging partnerships to promote both community and family growth.

In this case, Discovery Education and Schuyler Middle School are doing important things together to empower students in the Schuyler community. They are doing this by providing teachers with digital resources that enhance curriculum, inspire students and improve learning outcomes in this community.

Through a school improvement grant administered by the Nebraska Department of Education, Schuyler Middle School is providing its students and educators with Discovery Education’s full range of digital services and customized professional development materials to accelerate student achievement. Students currently use Discovery Education’s Techbook series, a digital textbook solution for Math, Science and Social Studies, as well as Discovery Education Streaming Plus, a comprehensive digital library of more than 100,000 learning assets aligned to state and national curriculum standards. As district educators integrate these resources into classroom instruction, they are receiving extensive, customized professional development support from Discovery Education experts.

It’s an exciting time for this community and, here at Eagle Communications, we’re proud to support the work Discovery Education and Schuyler Middle School are doing to prepare students for college, careers and citizenship.

Gary Shorman is president/CEO of Eagle Communications, an employee-owned operator with 59 cable systems in Kansas, Nebraska and Colorado.

At Cox Communications, we believe that by opening doors of opportunity and learning for students in our communities, we’re both investing in their futures and cultivating the next generation of our workforce.

We also believe that strategic partnerships with non-profits and corporations work best when we share like-minded goals and missions. Often that can take the form of us tapping into their core competencies so that we can extend our impact and deliver innovative education initiatives available at no cost to the community. We are always looking to support initiatives that benefit the communities in which we serve.

One key area of focus for us is education. We understand that today’s educators don’t always have the resources and support they need to engage their 21st century learners.

That’s why last month we partnered with Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, to deliver an afternoon of professional development to more than 100 Phoenix-area educators focused on how modern digital learning environments, powered by broadband, can improve student achievement.

The event was held in partnership with Arizona’s Scottsdale Unified School District and Paradise Valley Unified School District and open to Phoenix-area educators, students, families and community members.

The day began with an immersive, professional development opportunity for the local educators. Through a series of interactive sessions led by Discovery Education’s expert team, participants learned practical strategies and tactics to engage students and how to integrate educational technologies and rich digital content into teaching and learning. The educator engagement and enthusiasm was palpable — Dr. Dean Shareski had the audience jumping for joy — and the importance of broadband in today’s classrooms was ubiquitous.

Following the workshop, we hosted an engaging community night featuring Chris Jacobs, co-host of Velocity’s Overhaulin’. During the event, parents and members of the community experienced how broadband can power digital learning initiatives through a variety of interactive demonstrations including a student technology showcase that featured middle school girls who designed and printed prototypes in 3D as well as three student robotics teams who will compete in the world championship next month, an augmented reality technology presentation and more.

Parents also had the opportunity to take a stand against cyberbullying by signing our “Take Charge!” pledge, and got information on our participation in Connect2Compete, a broadband adoption program that offers discounted high-speed Internet service to low-income families.

Through our partnership with Discovery Education, we’re proud to support educators and their work to build modern digital learning environments, powered by broadband, to drive student achievement inside and outside of the classroom.

Susan Anable is vice president of public & government affairs for Cox Communications’s Southwest Region.

The school district has hosted teachers from MGSD for numerous professional development days throughout the year, including the “Mooresville Institute,” which focused on the effective integration of digital technology into instruction.

The expanded six-year partnership with Discovery Education will support the district’s goal of providing creative and meaningful learning experiences for students to improve learning outcomes by integrating Discovery Education Science Techbook into junior and high school classrooms and Social Studies Techbook for all junior high students. Discovery Education’s digital textbook series promotes collaboration, creativity and participatory learning. The series delivers individualized resources and engages students in learning concepts through rich digital assets, including virtual labs, video clips, an interactive glossary and more. Poplar Bluff junior and high school students will also continue to use Discovery Education Streaming Plus, a comprehensive digital library of more than 150,000 learning assets aligned to state and national curriculum standards.

As part of its efforts to provide dynamic and interactive learning opportunities to all students, the school district issued MacBook Airs to 800 junior high students for use at school and at home during the 2013-2014 school year. This coming school year, 1,400 high-schoolers will also receive a laptop as part of the 1:1 learning initiative.

“Discovery Education is proud to be a partner working towards Poplar Bluff Public Schools’ mission of achieving excellence through learning: every child, every hour, every day,” said Jason Barnes, vice president, Discovery Education in a statement. “We look forward to continuing to support Superintendent Chris Hon and the entire Poplar Bluff team in their digital transformation with the highest quality digital resources and customized, effective professional development.”
