                                <p><a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/fox-news">Fox News</a> continued its strong 2023 ratings run, finishing at the top of both the primetime and total day charts for third straight week.</p><p>Fox News averaged 2 million viewers in primetime for the week of January 29 to February 4, besting <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/msnbc">MSNBC’s</a> 1.2 million viewers and <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/espn">ESPN’s</a> 1 million watchers, according to <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/nielsen">Nielsen </a>numbers provided by Fox News. The cable news network has won the primetime crown in three of the first five weeks of 2024.</p><p><a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/hgtv">HGTV </a>finished fourth with 853,000 viewers followed by <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/history">History </a>with 765,000. <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/tbs">TBS </a>was sixth with 754,000, followed by <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/hallmark-channel">Hallmark Channel</a> (681,000), <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/discovery-channel">Discovery Channel </a>(642,000), <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/usa-network">USA Network</a> (622,000) and <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/insp">INSP</a> (617,000).</p><p>On a total day basis, Fox News averaged 1.3 million viewers, followed by MSNBC (794,000 viewers), ESPN (547,000), HGTV (445,000) and CNN (434,000), said Nielsen. </p>

                                <p><a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/discovery-channel">Discovery Channel’s</a> heavily promoted <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/shark-week">Shark Week</a> annual programming stunt jumped out to a fast start this past Sunday (July 23) with adult viewers, according to the network.</p><p>Discovery’s three-hour block of original primetime programming on July 23 — featuring such shows as <em>Belly of the Beast:</em> <em>Feeding Frenzy, Jaws vs The Meg </em>and<em> Serial Killer: Red Sea Attacks</em> — topped all television shows among adults 25 to 54 as it reached more than 5.3 million total viewers across Discovery Channel and Max during its premiere night, according to Discovery.</p><p>Overall, through its first four nights, Discovery said Shark Week programming was most watched on cable among all adults 25-54 and 18-49, as well as women 18-34 on a Nielsen-live-plus-same-day basis. </p><p>Discovery Channel heavily cross-promoted Shark Week programming across such Warner Bros Discovery platforms as <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/tbs">TBS,</a> <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/travel-channel">Travel Channel</a>, <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/tnt">TNT</a>, <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/food-network">Food Network</a>, <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/hgtv">HGTV</a> and <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/cnn">CNN,</a> according to the network.</p><p>“We were able to harness the strength of the Warner Bros.                                 <p>Shark Week is coming and a mouthful of new sponsors have signed up for the fearsome event’s 35th anniversary season.</p><p>Signing up for the 2023 edition are Budweiser, Chili’s Grill & Bar, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Domino’s, Mountain Dew, Long John Silver’s and the University of Phoenix.</p><p><a href="https://www.nexttv.com/news/airbnb-moreys-nautica-pnc-bank-red-robin-sports-clips-join-shark-week-sponsors#:~:text=Airbnb%2C%20Morey&apos;s%2C%20Nautica%2C%20PNC,Shark%20Week%20Sponsors%20%7C%20Next%20TV">Returning sponsor<u>s</u></a> include Gorilla Glue, PNC Bank, Sport Clips and Wayfair. </p><p>Shark Week sponsors often air specially-themed ads to mark the occasion. With his massive new excavator dredge known as The Mistress, Kelley encroaches on Pomrenke’s mining grounds. Discovery promises “an unforgettable knock-down-drag-out showdown at the dock.”</p><p>Later in the season, Vernon Adkison risks a search and rescue mission after a late-season storm sends the miners to the safety of the harbor.                                 <p>Cable news networks <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/fox-news">Fox News Channel</a> and <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/msnbc">MSNBC</a> continued their hot summer ratings pace, leading both the primetime and total-day charts for the first week of August.</p><p>Fox News finished first in primetime for the 10th consecutive week, averaging 2 million viewers for the week of August 1-7, followed by MSNBC with 978,000 viewers, according to Nielsen.</p><p>On a total-day basis, Fox News extended its win streak to 31 consecutive weeks with an average of 1.4 million viewers, followed by MSNBC with 670,000 watchers.</p><p>It’s the fourth week in a row that Fox News and MSNBC have occupied the top two slots in both the primetime and total-day charts, Nielsen said. </p><p><a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/hgtv">HGTV</a> was the most watched network in both primetime (925,000 viewers) and total day (528,000 viewers.) <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/insp">INSP</a> finished fourth in primetime with 816,000 viewers, followed by <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/tlc">TLC’s </a>804,000 viewers.</p><p><a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/tbs">TBS</a> (768,000 viewers), <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/hallmark-channel">Hallmark Channel </a>(763,000), <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/cnn">CNN</a> (656,000), <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/discovery-channel">Discovery Channel</a> (655,000) and <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/food-network">Food Network</a> (654,000) rounded out the top 10 most watched networks in primetime.</p><p>On a total-day basis, CNN (51,000 viewers), Hallmark Channel (452,000), INSP (425,000), Food Network (422,000),<a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/tv-land"> TV Land</a> (383,000), <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/usa-network">USA Network</a> (370,000), and TBS (359,000) finished among the top 10 most-watched cable networks, Nielsen reported. ■</p>

                                <p><a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/fox-news">Fox News</a> last week concluded a dominant July ratings performance by sweeping both the primetime and total day charts for the month.</p><p>Fox News averaged 2.1 million viewers in primetime for the week of July 25 to July 31 to top all cable networks for the ninth consecutive week, according to Nielsen. <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/msnbc">MSNBC </a>finished second with 1.1 million viewers. </p><p><a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/hgtv">HGTV</a> was the most watched entertainment network for the week with 965,000 viewers, followed by <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/hallmark-channel">Hallmark Channel’s</a> 957,000 viewers and <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/tbs">TBS’s</a> 836,000 watchers.</p><p>Rounding out the top 10 most-watched networks for the week in primetime were <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/discovery-channel">Discovery Channel</a> (810,000 viewers), <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/insp">INSP</a> (809,000), <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/tlc">TLC</a> (802,000), <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/usa-network">USA Network </a>(679,000) and <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/espn">ESPN</a> (676,000), said Nielsen.</p><p>On a total-day basis, Fox News crushed the cable network field with an average of 1.3 million viewers to notch its 30th consecutive weekly chart win, followed by MSNBC (688,000 viewers), Hallmark Channel (554,000), HGTV (518,000) and <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/cnn">CNN</a> (485,000), reported Nielsen. ■</p>

Discovery.</p><p>New Shark Week advertisers include Airbnb, Morey’s, Nautica, PNC Bank, Red Robin Gourmet Burgers and Brews and Sport Clips.</p><p>The new advertisers join <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/news/shark-week-spawns-everything-from-cupcakes-to-underwear">returning sponsors</a> GEICO, Gorilla Glue, Jeep brand, Wayfair and Sonic Drive-In.</p><p>This year, Shark Week offers crossplatform sponsorship opportunities such as social media campaigns across Instagram, TikTok and Twitter Amplify, as well as on-air elements that include custom vignettes, tagged tune-ins, billboards and in-program messaging. On <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/news/discovery-plus">Discovery Plus,</a> Shark Week is offering pause ads to advertisers. </p><p>“Shark Week’s programming keeps viewers coming back annually while providing our clients with sponsorship opportunities across linear and digital platforms that reach their target consumers wherever and whenever they view content,” Warner Bros.                                 <p>With <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/news/discovery-plus-everything-you-need-to-know">Discovery Plus</a> pitching in for the first time, Discovery Channel’s <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/news/shark-week-starts-on-discovery-july-11">Shark Week</a> is the largest in the 33-year history of the summer stunt. Discovery and Discovery Plus offer 45 hours of shark programming this year.  </p><p>Shark Week kicked off July 11 and continues through July 18. The streaming channel gives Discovery a chance to reach a new audience, and a younger one, according to Howard Swartz, senior VP of documentaries and specials/factual networks and streaming. “We can take chances with the content we put on Discovery Plus,” he said. “We can reach different audiences and we can reach new audiences.”</p><p>Discovery Plus offers two shark documentaries. <em>Envoy: Shark Cull </em>is centered on some big names in ocean conservation revealing the importance of sharks in our oceans. Eric Bana narrates. <em>Fin</em> sees director Eli Roth and a group of scientists, researchers and activists sail around the globe to investigate the death of millions of sharks, exposing a criminal enterprise. Executive producers include Leonardo DiCaprio, Nina Dobrev and Craig Piligian. </p><p>Other highlights include <em>Air Jaws: Going for Gold</em>, which shows the Air Jaws team at Seal Rock to capture the highest breach ever recorded; <em>MotherSharker</em>, which sees a team of scientists investigate where tiger sharks give birth; <em>Great White Comeback</em>, which looks into why great whites disappeared from South Africa; and <em>Mega Jaws of Bird Island</em>, also a look at great whites around South Africa. </p><p>“Great whites are such the stars of Shark Week,” said Swartz. </p><p>Celeb specials include <em>Tiffany Haddish Does Shark Week</em>; <em>Jackass Shark Week</em>, with Johnny Knoxville and Steve-O;<em> Brad Paisley’s Shark Country;</em> and <em>Dr. Pimple Popper Pops Shark Week</em>. </p><p>Shark Week also features a couple of film festivals: one centered on<em> </em><a href="https://www.nexttv.com/news/syfy-take-another-bite-out-sharknado-franchise-410641"><em>Sharknado</em> </a>on Discovery Plus, and another featuring the <em>Jaws </em>movies on Discovery.<em> Sharknado </em>stars Ian Ziering and Tara Reid host <em>The Real Sharknado </em>on Discovery July 14, looking into whether some of the things that happened in the <em>Sharknado </em>movies could ever happen in real life. </p><p>Everything that airs on Discovery will be available on Discovery Plus. </p><p>Unrelated to Shark Week, <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/news/sharkfest-starts-on-national-geographic-july-5">National Geographic kicked off Sharkfest July 5</a>, offering 21 hours of new premieres and 60 hours of what it calls “enhanced content.”</p><p>Swartz said Shark Week might be just what viewers are looking for after a rough year-plus. “It’s a little bit of escapism with content like this because the news was so bleak in 2020 and into 2021,” he said. “These animals, for me, have a re-enchanting-the-world quality. Their awe and wonder and beauty are so magnificent. They’re so entertaining, so fun and so full of adventure, and we think audiences really respond to that.” </p>

                                <p>The cable news networks continued to dominate the cable ratings race on a total day basis during the second quarter despite posting year-to-year declines, according to Nielsen. </p><p><a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/fox-news">Fox News</a> was the most watched network for the period of March 28 to June 27 with 1.1 million viewers to top all cable networks, although the news network was down 39% compared to second quarter 2020, reported Nielsen. <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/msnbc">MSNBC</a> finished second with 847,000 viewers, down 30% from last year, followed by <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/cnn">CNN</a>’s 654,000 watchers, down 45% from 2020. </p><p>All three networks tied for first place in total day ratings during the first quarter of 2021 with 1.3 million viewers. </p><p><a href="https://www.nexttv.com/news/weekly-cable-ratings-tnt-espn-tie-for-primetime-ratings-honors">Also Read: Weekly Cable Ratings: TNT, ESPN Tie for Primetime Ratings Honors</a></p><p>In primetime, Fox News averaged 2.1 million viewers to give the news network its second straight quarterly win in the category for the year, according to Nielsen.                                 <p>The NBA playoffs continue to deliver big ratings dividends for TNT and ESPN as both networks tied for first place on the weekly primetime charts, said Nielsen.</p><p>TNT and ESPN averaged 2.2 million viewers for the week of June 21 to June 27 on the strength of both network’s coverage of NBA Conference finals playoff games.                                 <p>The NBA Playoffs have helped both TNT and ESPN climb the primetime ratings charts as the league enters its semifinal playoff round. </p><p>TNT averaged 3.6 million primetime viewers for the week of June 14 to June 20, topping all cable networks for the fourth straight week, according to Nielsen.                                 <p><a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/discovery-channel">Discovery Channel</a> was the most in-demand cable network among people who can’t get it because they are either non-cable TV subscribers or cord cutters, according to a new survey by Beta Research.</p><p><a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/discovery">Discovery</a> was also the top-ranked basic cable network among non-cable TV subscribers who are heavy viewers of streaming networks.</p><p>In the Beta study, 37% of non cable TV subscribers and cord cutters said they were interested in Discovery.</p><p>Other networks scoring high included History and National Geographic with 34%; HGTV, Animal Planet and FX with 31%; and Food Network, ID and Comedy Central with 29%.</p><p>Discovery, HGTV, Animal Planet, Food Network and ID are all part of Discovery, which in January launched <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/news/discovery-plus-everything-you-need-to-know">Discovery Plus</a>, a streaming service featuring programming from its cable cable networks plus original shows.</p><p><a href="https://www.nexttv.com/news/discoverys-david-zaslav-on-upfront-we-need-pricing">Also Read: Discovery’s David Zaslav on Upfront: ‘We Need Pricing’</a></p><p>Beta found that 42% of cable subscribers were extremely or very interested in dropping cable TV and watching only the TV programming available on their tablets or computers.</p><p>Among those non-cable subscribers who are heavy viewers of streaming networks, 48% expressed interest in Discovery. </p><p>They also showed interest in Animal Planet (45%), National Geographic (45%), History (44%), FX (43%) and Food Network (41%).</p><p>Beta’s Cable Network Interest Study was conducted in March, with a national sample of 1,418 multichannel subscribers and a sub-sample of 582 non-subscribers to cable TV, including cord cutters.</p>

                                <p>TNT earned its second straight primetime cable ratings win last week on the strength of its NBA playoffs coverage, according to Nielsen. </p><p>TNT averaged 2.4 million viewers for the week of May 31 to June 6 to top Fox News’s 1.9 million viewers, said Nielsen. The network was paced by its coverage of the June 3 Phoenix Suns-Los Angeles Lakers Game Six playoffs telecast, which generated 4.5 million viewers, according to Nielsen.</p><p>MSNBC and HGTV tied for third with 1.2 million viewers, followed by ESPN with 1 million watchers. TBS (935,000), NBCSN (912,000), Hallmark Channel (816,000), TLC (807,000) and Discovery Channel (790,000) rounded out the top 10 most watched cable networks in primetime.</p><p>Fox News earned its 16th consecutive win in total day, averaging 1.1 million viewers, followed by TNT (802,000), MSNBC (751,000), HGTV (658,000) and CNN and ESPN (tied with 554,000), according to Nielsen. </p>

Last week the NBA for the first time featured a "play-in" tournament to determine the final two playoff slots in both the Eastern and Western Conferences. ESPN&apos;s May 19 Los Angeles Lakers-Golden State Warriors play-in game finished as the <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/news/tv-by-the-numbers-nba-is-tops-in-watch-time-ad-impressions-for-week-of-may-17">most watched show on cable last week</a> with 5.6 million viewers, according to Nielsen. </p><p><a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/hgtv">HGTV</a> finished fifth with 1.1 million viewers, followed by TBS (848,000 viewers), CNN and USA Network (tied with 829,000 viewers), Discovery Channel (795,000), and History (788,000).</p><p>On a 24-hour basis, Fox News led all cable networks for the 14th consecutive week with an average of 1.1 million viewers, followed by MSNBC (842,000), ESPN (764,000), HGTV (604,000), and CNN (569,000), said Nielsen. </p>

                                <p> Fox News easily topped the weekly primetime and total day charts last week for the first full week of May.</p><p>Fox News averaged 2.1 million viewers for the week of May 3 to May 9, topping MSNBC’s 1.5 million viewers and HGTV’s 1.2 million watchers, according to Nielsen. CNN finished fourth with 921,000, followed by History’s 873,000 viewers.</p><p>Rounding out the top 10 most watched networks in primetime for the week were ESPN (861,000 viewers), TNT (830,000), Discovery Channel (809,000), INSP (803,000) and TBS (802,000). </p><p>On the total day front, Fox News averaged 1.1 million viewers -- the only cable network to average more than 1 million viewers for the week -- to finish first. It marks the 12th straight week Fox News has topped both the primetime and total day charts.                                 <p>The cable news networks remained strong from a ratings perspective in April, finishing among the top three most watched networks on a total day basis for the month, according to <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/nielsen">Nielsen</a>.</p><p><a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/fox-news">Fox News</a> led the pack with 1.2 million viewers during the period of March 29 to April 25, followed by <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/msnbc">MSNBC</a> with 953,000 and <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/cnn">CNN</a> with 786,000 viewers, according to Nielsen.                                 <p>The launch of the <a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/march-madness">March Madness</a> men&apos;s college basketball tournament couldn&apos;t slow down Fox News Channel&apos;s ratings fast break for the month as the news network remained undefeated on both a primetime and total day basis, according to Nielsen. </p><p><a href="https://www.nexttv.com/tag/fox-news">Fox News</a> averaged 2.2 million viewers in primetime to finish in first place for the week of March 15 to March 21, according to Nielsen. TBS and TNT’s coverage of the tournament -- which returned this year after taking a pandemic-driven hiatus in 2020 -- helped the networks finish in second and fourth place respectively during the week. </p><p><a href="https://www.nexttv.com/news/cbs-sean-mcmanus-on-march-madness-im-not-worrying-about-ratings-being-down">Also Read: CBS&apos; Sean McManus on March Madness: I&apos;m Not Worrying about Ratings Being Down </a></p><p>MSNBC finished third with 1.7 million viewers, followed by HGTV and CNN, which tied for fifth place with 1.1 million viewers. Hallmark Channel (1 million viewers), History (1 million), Discovery Channel (822,000) and USA Network (763,000) rounded out the top 10 most watched cable networks in primetime, said Nielsen.</p><p>Fox News was triumphant on a total day basis for the fifth consecutive week, outpacing MSNBC, CNN, TBS and HGTV, according to Nielsen.</p>
