The artists behind the works include Vincent Van Gogh, Bronzino, Botticelli and Artemisia and Orazio Gentileschi, and the artwork dates back to the 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.

The works will reside in the museum’s European Paintings, European Sculpture and Decorative Arts, and Drawings and Prints exhibitions.

The Met called the gift “transformative,” and “one of the landmark promised gifts to The Met of the last half century.” Wolf is also donating money.

“With its dazzling range of European paintings, sculpture, decorative arts and works on paper, the Dick Wolf Collection represents one of the most meaningful gifts to The Met in recent memory, truly transforming and adding new dimensions to the Museum’s holdings,” Max Hollein, the Met’s Marina Kellen French director and CEO, said. “From works by the best-known and most beloved artists of the Renaissance and Baroque eras, to those who are lesser known but of deep historical importance, the collection reflects Dick Wolf’s excellent connoisseurship and enduring dedication to the diverse artistic media of the periods. Furthermore, the substantial financial contribution will provide critical support for The Met’s collection displays and scholarly pursuits. We are profoundly grateful for his generosity, which will impact The Met’s millions of visitors for many years to come.”

Wolf will also endow two galleries in the Department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts — the Quattrocento and Cinquecento Galleries, which will be named the Dick Wolf Galleries.

“From the time I was 8 years old, I would stop at The Met on my way home from school, two to three times a month, and wander the galleries,” Wolf, who grew up in Manhattan, said. “It was a simpler time, there was no admission, you could walk in off the street. I’m sure most collectors would agree that seeing your art displayed in the world’s greatest museum is an honor. This is my holiday gift to the Museum, the people of New York, and the city where I first encountered the power and beauty of great art.”

The Van Gogh artwork is the 1882 painting entitled Beach at Scheveningen in Calm Weather. That sold last year for $2.8 million.

Wolf’s shows include Law & Order, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Law & Order: Organized Crime, Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, Chicago P.D., FBI, FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International.
After 24 seasons, Dick Wolf’s Law & Order: Special Victims Unit still brings in eyeballs.

The procedural crime drama, which premiered in 1999, came in No. 3 for live, linear watch-time with a 1.06% viewership share across all dayparts from Jan. 1 through June 30, 2023, according to data from Inscape, the currency-grade smart TV ACR data provider and data technology division of Vizio. SVU was behind only the NBA (1.83%) and NFL (1.72%), making the Mariska Hargitay- and Ice-T-starring series the top scripted program in the first half of the year. The series also nabbed the No. 3 spot when looking at weekends only with 1.59% viewership share, again behind the NFL and NBA.

The Dick Wolf universe — which includes stalwarts SVU, original crime procedural Law & Order and spinoff Law & Order: Organized Crime as well as Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D., Chicago Med, FBI and FBI: International — had three of the top 25 shows across all dayparts.

On a weekly basis for all dayparts in H1, SVU was among the top five most-watched programs weekly for every week except two. The week of Feb. 6-12, thanks to the Super Bowl, basketball and PGA Golf, SVU came in at No. 6. For the week of March 6-12, basketball, the Players Championship and the Oscars pushed SVU to No. 7.

SVU’s domination didn’t stop there. On USA Network alone, airings accounted for nearly half (44.76%) of all minutes watched on the network in the first half of 2023.

Looking at primetime minutes watched, however, the top Dick Wolf show wasn’t SVU but rather Chicago Fire. Fire ranked No. 8, capturing 1.02% of primetime minutes watched. SVU came in as the third most-watched show from Wolf at No. 15 with 0.84%. Wolf’s FBI edged out SVU in primetime at 0.91% for the No. 13 spot. In all, the Wolf-verse had five of the top 25 primetime shows.

Wolf series also performed on the ad side. According to iSpot, new episodes and reruns of Dick Wolf shows generated 123.2 billion national linear household TV ad impressions across all dayparts from Jan. 1 through June 30, 2023.

SVU was the top Dick Wolf show for national TV ad impressions with 43.3 billion. Its closest Wolf sibling was Chicago Fire with 21.8 billion impressions.

For all programs, dayparts and episode types including sports, SVU came in at a familiar No. 3 for impressions share of voice (1.34%) in H1 2023. No. 1 and No. 2? You probably guessed it: NBA with 2.08% and NFL with 1.39%.

When narrowed down to new episodes and reruns in primetime only, SVU was the top Dick Wolf show again for national linear TV ad impressions (9.8 billion), followed by Chicago Fire (8.1 billion) and FBI (7.6 billion). If sports are included across primetime, SVU still makes the cut, ranking fifth with an impressions SOV of 1.22%.

Looking at only Dick Wolf shows again, the brands with the most national TV ad impressions were Domino’s (1.9 billion), Progressive (1.2 billion), Liberty Mutual (883.9 million), Burger King (878.8 million) and Kohl’s (829.8 million). Network-wise, Ion (42 billion impressions), USA (32.9 billion), NBC (20.1 billion), CBS (11.5 billion) and WE tv (5 billion) had the most impressions across all Dick Wolf shows.

With the ongoing writers and actors strikes, syndicated shows and reruns might be pulling double-duty come fall. So expect to see shows with deep libraries like the Wolf-verse’s SVU and Law & Order continue to do well in the second half of 2023.

NBC re-committed a third of its primetime lineup to procedural mastermind Dick Wolf on Monday. But in the process, the network seems to have pulled back from thoughts of forfeiting its 10 o'clock hour to its affiliates, at least for the 2023-24 TV season.

The network announced that all six of its Wolf Entertainment-produced procedural dramas will be back on its schedule in the fall, including Chicago P.D., the top broadcast drama in the 18-49 demo, and Law & Order: Organized Crime, both of which air at 10 p.m. (on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively).

The two other "Chicago" series, Chicago Med and Chicago Fire, were also renewed, as were the flagship Law & Order (for a 23rd season) and Law & Order: SVU (entering its 25th season).

All three "Chicago" shows rank in the top 10 among broadcast TV in both the demo and total viewers on a Live+7 Day basis, NBC said, citing Nielsen data. The three "Law & Order" series, meanwhile, have "reached 50 million viewers" this season across NBC and streaming service Peacock, the network added.

Last summer, NBC conceded to once again seriously pondering a retreat from the 10 p.m. hour, citing cost considerations

“While NBC is the number one network, we are always looking at strategies to ensure that our broadcast business remains as strong as possible,” NBC said in a statement released in August. “As a company, our advantage lies in our ability to provide audiences with the content they love across broadcast, cable and streaming.”

Law & Order returns on NBC February 24. The crime drama had a stunning 20 seasons before going off the air in 2010, and totalled 456 episodes. It will soon add to those totals.

Sam Waterston plays district attorney Jack McCoy. Anthony Anderson, last seen in Black-ish, plays Detective Kevin Bernard. Camryn Manheim, Hugh Dancy, Jeffrey Donovan and Odelya Halevi are in the cast too.

Detective Bernard came to be in season 18. Anderson said he contacted executive producer Dick Wolf when he heard Law & Order was coming back. “Returning to the streets of New York, returning to our soundstages and that squad room and donning that badge, Badge No. 1901, was just, like, sitting in a well-worn saddle,” Anderson said at a TCA Winter Press Tour event. “It gripped you just right and was comfortable.”

Waterston said he was on board immediately for the reboot. “I don't think [Wolf has] ever stopped talking about it,” he said. “One of the reasons that we're back is because of his persistence and determination and his complete conviction that it was a terrible mistake to stop in the first place.”

Waterston said the other reason the show is coming back is that “the audience never stopped watching them.” Viewers’ “persistent appetite for Law & Order is a major reason why we're back,” he added.

Law & Order is executive produced by Dick Wolf, Rick Eid, Arthur Forney and Peter Jankowski. The series is produced by Universal Television, in association with Wolf Entertainment.

Halevi called landing on Law & Order, which she watched as a child in Israel, “a dream.”

“Ever since I was a kid growing up in a foreign country, I've been watching the show in the '90s with my mom,” she said. “And I said, ‘Oh, Mom, I want to be like her. I want to be a lawyer.’ ”

Donovan, who starred in Burn Notice, also called ending up on Law & Order a dream. “I‘ve watched almost every episode. I watched it when I was a college student at NYU in the ’90s, and my dream was always to be a guest star on it,” he said. “And I was always envious of all of my friends who were getting on, and now I’m walking on the hallowed grounds of the squad room with Camryn and Anthony. It’s just a dream come true.”

Manheim said her first job out of NYU was Law & Order back in 1991. She played three different characters over the years. “It was a badge of honor to be able to be in an off‑Broadway play or a Broadway play and say that you'd been on Law & Order and then how many times you'd been on Law & Order,” she said, adding that it’s “a huge full circle for me to come back and play [Lieutenant] Kate Dixon.”

Anderson said “the magic of the show” is that viewers don’t really get a good look at the main characters’ personal lives, with the focus remaining on how justice is delivered. “It's about the crime,” he said. “It's about solving it. It's about moving it along and bringing law and order to the world. I think that is part of the magic of what Dick Wolf created.”

Character is revealed in the choices the attorneys and detectives — and criminals, for that matter — make, according to Rick Eid. “It‘s story-first on this show,” he said. “But I think you‘ll see hints of personal backstories and how they inform decisions and choices that people make.”

Law & Order will continue to rip stories from the headlines of New York’s tabloids. “I think that‘s the core of the narratives of this show, year in, year out,” said Waterston. “And, boy, are there a lot of stories that need telling. Boy, are they out there. The challenge must be choosing which one to do first.”

The final season of Black-ish began on ABC last month. Anderson said he was psyched to jump to another well-established series. “Coming back to an iconic show in Law & Order was a no-brainer for me,” said Anderson. “Hopefully 20 years from now people will be clamoring to come back to the Black-ish reboot and hopefully I‘m around for that. But leaving one great show to go back to another great show, I jumped at the opportunity to do it.” ■

There isn’t much to celebrate on broadcast TV these days, with one-time ratings magnets such as the Oscars drawing a fraction of the crowd they used to. Dick Wolf dramas, on the other hand, continue to win over sizable audiences. Wolf, the brain behind the multiple-show Law & Order, Chicago and FBI brands, has for decades delivered compelling storytelling, with just the right mix of character development and plot, to keep viewers tuning in.

Current Wolf series have more than 1,000 episodes on the air. The shows have forever shone a spotlight on law enforcement and how cops corral the bad guys. George Floyd’s death a year ago, and with Black Lives Matter taking off after that, has compelled many Americans to rethink the way they view police.

Wolf Entertainment has done its own soul-searching. An abundance of panel discussions, discussions in the writers’ rooms, consultants and loads of research have pushed the Wolf team to fully grasp all sides of this vital issue. “The people inside the company, the showrunners, the producers, we spend a lot of time talking about police behavior, probably more time than any other non-law enforcement group of people in the country, because it’s what we do every day,” Wolf said at a press event for Law & Order: Organized Crime. “We’re doing what we always do, which is listen very carefully and read virtually everything written about this, from both sides of the spectrum.”

Rick Eid, executive producer and showrunner on Chicago P.D. and FBI, told B+C/Multichannel News the series “try to be honest to the moment and the time. Obviously police reform is a really important issue right now that we are taking very seriously.”

Wolf promised his cop dramas will reflect modern America in a thoughtful manner. “The shows will speak for themselves,” he said.

Broadcast Bedrock

There are many of them. Tuesdays on CBS, season three of FBI is on at 9 p.m. and season two of FBI: Most Wanted is on at 10. On Wednesdays, NBC has season six of Chicago Med at 8 p.m., season nine of Chicago Fire at 9 p.m. and season eight of Chicago P.D. at 10.

Law & Order: SVU is in season 22 on NBC (the network signed on for three more seasons last year) and Law & Order: Organized Crime premiered to boffo ratings April 1, with viewers keen to see the reunion of Detectives Olivia Benson (played by Mariska Hargitay) and Elliot Stabler (played by Christopher Meloni), longtime partners on SVU until Meloni departed in 2011.

On May 14, NBC shared its 2021-2022 schedule, which sees Wolf’s Chicago dramas on Wednesdays and a Law & Order trio on Thursdays.

David Eigenberg (l.) as Lt. We tell procedural stories. The DNA of the Law & Order franchise or SVU is very much in our show, but we probably will get to know Stabler in a way you’ve never gotten to know him.”

Wolf Entertainment is more than scripted stuff. Unscripted series, under the management of Tom Thayer, include Murder for Hire on Oxygen, as well as projects on the air and in development at A&E and Peacock, among other networks.

The scripted programs have such a dedicated viewer base that one night in mid April, NBC got second place in the overnight ratings with its three Chicago shows — despite them being in repeats. Whether they’re first runs or reruns, contemporary story lines and a deep bench of talent give the Wolf shows a unique sheen. Media consultant Bill Carroll mentioned “an unbelievable bench of stage actors playing guest characters that give a certain depth to the shows.”

“It feels very contemporary, there’s a strong following for the main characters, and the quality of acting — it all adds up to a positive,” Carroll added.

Yes, WE Can

Asked about the success of his shows, Wolf shared a message he passed along to network executives. “Years ago, at Christmastime, I sent plaques to all the network heads,” said Wolf. “They said, ‘It’s the writing, stupid.’ ”

Those who know him well said Wolf has a unique knack for finding talent, whether it’s in the writers’ room, cast or production wing, and giving them the space to do their thing. The Wolf series work because of a crystal clear vision from the boss and boots on the ground with the skill, experience and discipline to execute on that vision.

Dick Wolf (Image credit: Maarten de Boer/NBCUniversal)

“Everybody has a voice,” said Peter Jankowski, Wolf Entertainment chief operating officer and executive producer on the Law & Order, FBI and Chicago brands.

Eid noted Wolf’s “amazing eye” for talent. “His vision is what we all try to follow,” said Eid. “It’s a very specific vision, not only for the show, but ultimately for the entire franchise.”

In 2019, Wolf Films rebranded to Wolf Entertainment. More recently, team members began referring to the team as WE. It’s an abbreviation, but it also sums up the Wolf Entertainment mindset. True teamwork “sets us apart from other television production companies,” said Jankowski.

A foreboding mantra guides the WE team. “Work like you can be canceled tomorrow,” Jankowski shared. “That’s what happens in television.”

The common ground between the Wolf series is pretty simple, according to Eid: intriguing storytelling. “That’s what we strive for each and every episode — credible, grounded, honest storytelling,” Eid said. “Every department shares their excellence on every episode. The aggregate effect of that energy and effort, and having the right people in place, creates shows that are differentiated from other shows.”

Wolf has long had an overall deal with Universal Television. Universal president Erin Underhill said the Wolf camp goes about its business in a unique manner. “Wolf Entertainment is really smart about how they approach production and post,” she said. “They’ve built an incredible system that protects each aspect of filmmaking and they use their resources wisely.”

The team has had to be particularly wise to shoot amidst the pandemic. They shot one fewer episode of Organized Crime due to COVID challenges, Wolf noted, “but that hasn’t affected the storytelling at all.”

Janikowski mentioned the “uncomfortable environment” actors and producers have experienced over the past year, masking up and staying apart. “Everyone’s muscles have had to be reprogrammed,” he said.

With so many shows, it’s a lot of muscles to reprogram. But the Wolf series all came together, as they always have.

The Wolf Entertainment rebrand saw a renewed focus on digital, including a social media push and podcasting, such as The Law and Order: SVU Podcast and scripted series Hunted.

Wolf’s son Elliot heads up the digital team. “It’s been amazing to see the response from fans while building the Wolf Entertainment community,” said Elliot, executive VP of digital. “When it comes to digital, we want to be at the tip of the spear in terms of innovation. All of our efforts are geared towards creating a stronger connection with fans of our shows and expanding the ways in which we tell stories.”

Hargitay and Meloni were the guests on the SVU podcast in late March, just before their characters reconnected. Hargitay spoke about the benefits of sharing a long, intense history with Meloni on set. “One of the biggest gifts, for me, is this innate knowing that Chris and I can navigate any scene to where it needs to be,” she said. “We sort of know, better than anyone, really, what the scene is because of our history. And that’s exciting because, if we read something and it’s not quite right or it’s more of a rough draft and it has beautiful shape but it’s not quite nuanced as we want it to be, or not exactly right emotionally, we can get there.”

What’s Next

On May 3, NBC announced a straight-to-series order on Law & Order: For the Defense, a look at a criminal defense firm. “We spent the last 30 years on shows that played offense,” Wolf said at the time. “Now it will be great to play defense.”

Speaking before the announcement, Underhill said there is always demand for another Wolf series or two. “Knowing Dick’s ambitions, I’m sure there are more great shows percolating in his head,” she said. “He has a knack for knowing what people want to see.”

Jankowski sounded a similar note before For the Defense was divulged. “With Dick Wolf, there is always room for another show,” he said.

Major producers, including Shonda Rhimes and Ryan Murphy, have shifted to Netflix after a string of hits on traditional TV. Wolf has a project in development at Netflix, details of which his camp would not share. But Wolf Entertainment digs broadcast and the relatively hefty audiences a well-made show can gather, Jankowski said, and for the large number of episodes they get to produce.

Marina Squerciati (l.) as Kim Burgess and LaRoyce Hawkins as Kevin Atwater in Chicago P.D. (Image credit: Lori Allen/NBC)

In terms of streaming partners, NBCUniversal’s Peacock inked a deal last year for three Law & Order series and the Chicago trio, while IMDb TV ordered the Wolf police-on-patrol drama On Call.

“As storytellers and producers, we don’t care what platform it is,” Eid said. “We’re just trying to make something that’s engaging and honest and entertaining.”

The FBI brand has taken off since its 2018 launch. Star Missy Peregrym called her Maggie character “an everyday superhero” who wins over viewers with her peculiar mix of vulnerability, empathy and toughness.

Three consecutive episodes of FBI: Most Wanted drew more than 6 million viewers apiece in March and April.

FBI: International is scheduled to debut next season. It will follow the elite agents of the FBI’s international division as they traverse the world to protect Americans. Derek Haas will be showrunner. “FBI is the fastest-growing brand on television and our partner Dick Wolf has found yet another creative way to expand its universe,” said Kelly Kahl, CBS Entertainment president, when the series was announced in March.

Unstable(r)

Before its premiere, Wolf said Organized Crime would get way inside Elliot Stabler’s head. “These villains are going to be really bad guys, and they’ll give Chris [Meloni] a constant source of energy, outrage and belief in justice,” said Wolf, “and a different way of pursuing criminals than we had before.”

Stabler has always been tantalizingly close to snapping, and the murder of his wife has brought him that much closer. “Injustice makes his head explode,” Meloni said. “This is Elliot 2.0, and hopefully his evolution has a clear understanding that the world is unjust. How you adapt to realities that keep punching you in the face.”

Zeeko Zaki as Agent O.A. That night’s Law & Order: SVU episode scored a 4.3 rating in viewers 18-49, and 17.1 million total viewers. The Organized Crime premiere did a 4.7 in 18-49, and 18.1 million have watched. Such ratings are rare on broadcast anymore.

Wolf told B+C he was “pleasantly surprised” by the crossover’s performance. “Obviously the two-hour premiere was a truly special event,” he said, “with Mariska and Chris getting back together.”

The second season has 24 episodes planned. Wolf mentioned three eight-episode arcs for Organized Crime: One fashioned after The Godfather, one after American Gangster and one after Scarface.

The Wolf shows have long been described as being ripped from the headlines, but Wolf suggested there’s more context to it. “We take the headline but not the body copy,” he said.

Whether it’s Chicago, FBI, Law & Order or a new brand, Wolf Entertainment shows have a knack for hooking viewers a moment or two after an episode begins, and holding them across the hour — week after week, season after season. “The audience looks forward to going on an emotional journey each week and they come because the shows deliver,” said Underhill. “Dick is smart about infusing new life into his shows with compelling new characters, topical issues and dynamic guest stars.”

Jankowski said Wolf understands television every bit as well as the network execs he deals with, including what keeps viewers watching at, say, Wednesdays at 8 in an increasingly on-demand world. “He has his eye on the horizon all the time,” Jankowski said. “He has such a strategic mind. There’s no producer in television like him.”
