Season two of Diary of a Future President premieres on Disney Plus Aug. 18. The show details the U.S. president, Elena Canero-Reed, and how the Cuban-American rose to prominence from middle school on. 

Ilana Peña created the series and is the showrunner. Tess Romero plays young Elena and Gina Rodriguez portrays Elena as an adult. Rodriguez, who starred in Jane the Virgin, is an executive producer. 

When the show premiered, Peña likened it to a Latino Wonder Years. 

Selenis Leyva plays Elena’s mother Gabi, Charlie Bushnell is her brother Bobby, and Michael Weaver plays Gabi’s boyfriend Sam. 

Keith Heisler and Molly Breeskin are executive producers alongside Peña and Rodriguez. Diary of a Future President is produced by CBS Studios in association with I Can and I Will Productions.

The series premiered early in 2020. 

Streaming service Disney Plus has renewed its scripted series Diary of a Future President for a second season, the streaming service said. 

The series, executive produced by Gina Rodriguez, follows the adventures of a young teen navigating the ups and downs of middle school on her journey to become the future president of the United States, said officials from the service.

Original series Diary of a Future President, with Gina Rodriguez executive producing and guest starring, premieres on Disney+ Jan. 17. Ilana Peña created the show, which is inspired by her childhood, growing up Cuban-American and raised by a single mother. 

Told from the narration of her diary, Diary of a Future President follows Elena, as she navigates middle school and begins her journey to become the future president of the United States.

There are 10 episodes. Robin Shorr is showrunner. Shorr executive produces, along with Peña, Rodriguez, Emily Gipson and Brad Silberling. 

Rodriguez, formerly of Jane the Virgin, plays grown-up Elena when she is the U.S. president. Rodriguez directed the pilot.

Peña previously wrote for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. She calls Diary a “coming of age story with warmth and humor and heart.”

Tess Romero plays young Elena. Charlie Bushnell portrays her brother. Selenis Leyva and Michael Weaver are also in the cast. 

I Can and I Will Productions and CBS Television Studios produce the show. 

Asked what the viewer will take away from the series, Peña said, “I hope they take away the heart and warmth that I and the cast and crew poured into the show.”

The second week of January features a bevy of new and returning show premieres from cable networks and streaming services.

Paramount network on Jan. 15 will premiere 68 Whiskey, a new drama series chronicling army medics serving in Afghanistan, while Apple TV+ on Jan. 17 launches a new family-themed series Diary of a Future President.

On the returning series front, Netflix will launch the sixth season of its comedy series Grace and Frankie on Jan. 15, while the next day  Freeform will launch the third season of grown-ish.
