Entertainment Tonight’s Kevin Frazier and Nischelle Turner are returning to host the 51st annual Daytime Emmys, CBS and the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) said Thursday. 

Frazier and Turner both are nominated in the category of outstanding daytime personality — daily, while Entertainment Tonight is nominated for outstanding entertainment news series. 

NATAS also announced the 2024 Gold and Silver Circle Honorees. The 2024 Gold Circle inductees are Jerome Dobson, writer: Guiding Light, As the World Turns, General Hospital, Santa Barbara; A Martínez, actor: The Bay, Santa Barbara; and Suzanne Rogers, actress: Days of Our Lives. The 2024 Silver Circle inductees are Patricia Denney, former hair and makeup department head, The Young And The Restless; Kathleen Finch, chairman and CEO, US Networks, Warner Brothers Discovery; Linda Grand, set master props, The Bold & The Beautiful; Janet Spellman-Drucker, co-executive producer, Days of Our Lives; Mark Teschner, casting director, General Hospital; and Rolonda Watts, talk show host, actress and voiceover talent, Sherri, Curious George, Divorce Court.

Those inductees join this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award winners, who are executive producer and actress Edward J. and Melody Thomas Scott and chef, cookbook author and food television star Lidia Bastianich. 

The 51st annual Daytime Emmys marks the 18th time CBS has broadcast the awards show, more than any other network. It aired on The CW in 2009 and then on CBS in 2010, 2011, 2020, 2022, and 2023. In between, the telecast moved around to different cable networks and was streamed. The Daytime Emmys, which is produced by NATAS and Associated Television International, will be broadcast live from the Westin Bonaventure in downtown Los Angeles. Adam Sharp and Lisa Armstrong are executive producers from NATAS, while David McKenzie is executive producer from ATI.

The Daytime Emmys will air on CBS on Friday, June 7 at 8 p.m. ET/PT and will stream live and on demand on Paramount Plus.

After Thursday night’s sneak peek, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences on Friday announced the rest of this year’s Daytime Emmy nominees. 

NBCUniversal’s The Kelly Clarkson, last year’s winning talk show, again was nominated as outstanding daytime talker. Kelly Clarkson, the host of which also is nominated for best daytime talk-show host, is joined in that category by Warner Bros.’ The Jennifer Hudson Show, Disney’s Tamron Hall and The View and Disney Plus’ Turning the Tables with Robin Roberts. 

Neither Hudson nor Roberts is nominated for best talk host, while Hall and the hosts of The View join Clarkson, Live’s Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos, and the hosts of The Talk. Disney’s talk leader, Live with Kelly and Mark, was not nominated in the talk-show category.

The full list of nominations followed Thursday night’s release of a few key categories across entertainment news programs Access Hollywood, E! News, Entertainment Tonight and Extra. The three syndicated entertainment news magazines all were nominated for best entertainment news magazine on Friday.

Nominated for outstanding legal or courtroom program were CBS’ Hot Bench, Amazon Freevee’s Judy Justice, Warner Bros.’ canceled The People’s Court and Allen Media Group’s Justice for the People with Judge Milian (hosted by The People’s Court’s Marilyn Milian) and We the People with Judge Lauren Lake. 

Besides daytime talk-show host (and culinary show host), the rest of the hosting categories were split into two this year: Daytime Personality – Daily and Daytime Personality – Non-Daily. Nominated in the first category are Caught in Providence’s 87-year-old judge, Frank Caprio, who announced in December that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Joining Caprio are the co-hosts and correspondents of Entertainment Tonight, led by Kevin Frazier and Nischelle Turner; the host and correspondents of CBS’ Inside Edition, led by anchor Deborah Norville; Divorce Court’s Star Jones and Robert Hernandez; and Judge Judy Sheindin, her granddaughter Sarah Rose, Whitney Kumar and Kevin Rasco of Judy Justice. 

Two stars more widely known for their non-soap opera work snagged nominations in the guest-actor category, with Guy Pearce grabbing a nod for Australia’s long-running Neighbors, which airs on Amazon Freevee, and 98-year-old Dick Van Dyke earning a nomination for his guest turn on Peacock’s Days of Our Lives.

Daytime fans got a sneak peek at nominations for the 51st annual Daytime Emmys, with the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) announcing the nods for outstanding daytime drama, lead actor and lead actress as well as outstanding daytime talk-show host(s) across three syndicated magazines — Entertainment Tonight, Access Hollywood and Extra. E! News was slated to announce the nominations for outstanding talk show on Thursday night at 8:30 p.m. PT. The rest of the nominations will be released Friday at noon ET. 

Extra started with the nominations for outstanding lead performance by an actor in a daytime drama series with nods going to Eric Braeden of CBS’s The Young and the Restless, and to Scott Clifton, Thorsten Kaye and John McCook of CBS’s The Bold and the Beautiful. Eric Martsolf of Peacock’s Days of Our Lives also scored a nomination. 

Entertainment Tonight announced the nominations for outstanding lead performance by an actress in a daytime drama series and for daytime talk show host. Nominated actresses are Days of Our Lives’ Tamara Brawn, General Hospital’s Finola Hughes and Cynthia Watros, The Bold and the Beautiful’s Katherine Kelly Lang and Annika Noelle and The Young and the Restless’ Michelle Stafford. 

Mentioned for outstanding daytime talk-show host were last year’s winner, Kelly Clarkson, along with Live’s husband-and-wife team of Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos, Tamron Hall and the panels of ABC’s The View and CBS’ The Talk, which will end its 15-season run at the end of the year. 

Access Hollywood reported the nominations for outstanding daytime drama series, with all four of the remaining network soaps — The Young and the Restless, The Bold and the Beautiful, Days of Our Lives and General Hospital — garnering mentions. Joining them were two shows off of streamers: Amazon Freevee’s Neighbours, the Australian soap opera that launched the careers of such Aussie actors as Margot Robbie, Russell Crowe, Chris Hemsworth, Guy Pearce and more; and PopstarTV’s The Bay, which has won the Daytime Emmy 23 times including five for outstanding digital drama series. General Hospital won this award last year. The Daytime Emmys will have a new daytime drama to consider come 2025 with CBS planning to debut new soap opera The Gates next January.

The Daytime Emmys have recognized outstanding achievement in television programming since 1974, honoring work in such categories as daytime dramas, talk shows, instructional programming, hosting, culinary and legal/courtroom programs. In 2021, NATAS and the Television Academy announced plans to realign the Daytime and Primetime Emmy Awards to be organized by content genre as opposed to program airtime.

Representing NATAS, Adam Sharp and Lisa Armstrong are executive producers, along with ATI’s David McKenzie. The Lifetime Achievement honoree, nominations, host and additional information will be announced in the coming weeks.

ABC’s soap opera General Hospital was named outstanding daytime drama while NBCUniversal’s The Kelly Clarkson Show repeated as outstanding talk series at the Daytime Emmys on Friday night. The awards, which were postponed from June due to the writers' and actors' strikes, aired CBS and streamed on Paramount Plus. The primetime ceremony was hosted by Entertainment Tonight’s Kevin Frazier and Nischelle Turner, whose show went on to be named outstanding entertainment news magazine. 

The Creative Arts and Lifestyle awards were handed out Saturday afternoon. Both ceremonies were held at the Westin Bonaventure in downtown Los Angeles.

Overall, General Hospital won seven Daytime Emmys, six during the televised ceremony, which also acknowledged the show for its 60-year run. Besides best daytime drama, General Hospital  won a Daytime Emmy for best supporting actress for Sonya Eddy, who died a year ago. Eddy and fellow General Hospital star Tyler Christopher both were mentioned during the show's "In Memoriam segment."

Likewise, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS)  paid tribute to CBS’ The Young and the Restless, which has been on the air for 50 years. Both General Hospital and The Young and the Restless have managed to buck the trend of daytime soaps, which has been to cancel them or move them to affiliated streaming platforms.

Kelly Clarkson won a total of six Daytime Emmys, including outstanding daytime talk-show host for Clarkson, repeating last year’s wins. The Kelly Clarkson Show also won Emmys in the categories of directing, lighting, technical direction, and live sound mixing and sound.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s canceled The People’s Court was named outstanding legal/court show. CBS’ The Drew Barrymore Show won for best promotional announcement for its season-three premiere promo, “Drew’s Got the Beat.” Netflix’s Down to Earth with Zac Efron snagged the honor for outstanding main title and graphic design.

In the lifestyle categories, Discovery Plus’ José Andrés and Family in Spain was named outstanding culinary series, while Taste the Culture’s Justin Sutherland won for outstanding culinary host. Netflix’s Wild Babies won for best travel, adventure and nature program, while Netflix’s Instant Dream Home took home the award for best instructional and how-to program. AJ+’s Eat This With Yara scored best lifestyle program. 

Lifetime’s Variety Power of Women: Changemakers won best arts and popular culture program, while PBS’ Italy Made with Love was named best educational and information program.

Four “legends” of daytime –  Peter Bergman, Cynthia Watros, Greg Rikaart and Francesca James –  also were honored during the show. Susan Lucci received a Lifetime Achievement award for playing Erica Kane on ABC’s All My Children, a role for which she was famously nominated 19 times before finally winning in 1999. On Saturday, long-time daytime talk host Maury Povich also was given a Lifetime Achievement Award, presented to him by his wife, Connie Chung.

“Congratulations to all of tonights’ winners for their exceptional contributions to the world of daytime. Tonight, as we commemorated our 50th anniversary with the legends of television, we were thrilled to celebrate Susan Lucci with a Lifetime Achievement Honor, as she has left an indelible mark in the hearts and minds of viewers,” said Adam Sharp, president and CEO, NATAS, in a statement. 

The Daytime Emmys will bestow Lifetime Achievement honors on All My Children’s Susan Lucci, 76, and daytime talk-show host Maury Povich, 84, when its ceremony is held once the writers strike concludes, said the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) on Friday. 

“We are thrilled to be recognizing two icons with Lifetime Achievement honors, Susan Lucci and Maury Povich. Both of them have had astonishing success and deep impact in the world of daytime television, Susan in drama series and Maury in talk, and have left their indelible marks on the industry,” said NATAS president/CEO Adam Sharp, in a statement.

Lucci was nominated as outstanding lead actress in a drama series 21 times and won once, in 1999, during her starring role across the daytime drama's entire run from 1970 to 2011. Lucci also starred in Lifetime’s Devious Maids and the feature film Joy and appeared on such shows as Lifetime’s Army Wives, TV Land’s Hot in Cleveland, ABC’s Dancing with the Stars and NBC’s Saturday Night Live. 

“I am truly humbled to receive this esteemed award from the Academy,” Lucci said in a statement. “Throughout my career, I have been incredibly fortunate to work alongside exceptional talents and [be] embraced by my fans that have been with me every step of the way. This honor is not just a reflection of my journey, but a testament to the enduring power of storytelling and the profound connection we are so lucky to forge with audiences all over the world through television.”

Povich starred on his eponymous daytime talk show, which was produced and distributed by NBCUniversal Syndication Studios, from September 1991 through September 2022. Prior to that, he hosted Fox’s syndicated magazine show, A Current Affair, from 1986 to 1990. He began his career in television as a local anchor in Washington D.C., Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Philadelphia. He also served two consecutive terms as president of NATAS’ New York chapter.

“I’m just blown away by this honor from the Academy. I have always had great respect for its work as I served on the National Board and was President of the New York Chapter. I guess if you hang around long enough, some good things happen. It’s been a 60-plus year ride for me in this business, so I feel extremely blessed with this acknowledgment,” Povich said, also in a statement.

The late John Aniston, longtime star of Days of Our Lives and father of Jennifer, received this honor last year. 

The Daytime Emmys, which are produced by NATAS, had been scheduled to be held Friday, June 16, with a creative arts and lifestyle ceremony to follow on Saturday, June 17, but both of those ceremonies have been delayed in light of the writers strike.

NATAS also announced this year’s Gold and Silver Circle Honorees, recognizing “exceptional professionals who have performed distinguished service within the television industry, setting standards for achievement, mentoring, leadership and professional accolades for 50 or 25 years, respectively.”

This year’s Gold Circle honors are Tanya Hart, host and producer, entertainment news; Wendy Riche, producer, daytime drama; Al Schwartz, producer, specials; and Vernée Watson, performer, daytime drama.

Silver Circle honorees are Christina Knack, production coordinator, daytime drama; and Patrick Weiland, producer, lifestyle. 

Kelly Clarkson and Drew Barrymore were both nominated for best daytime talk show and best daytime talk host as the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) revealed the Daytime Emmy Awards nominations on Wednesday. 

NBCUniversal’s The Kelly Clarkson Show led all syndicated nominations with 11, while CBS Media Ventures’s The Drew Barrymore Show took seven, followed by Warner Bros.’ Jennifer Hudson with six. Among all nominees, ABC’s General Hospital led with 19, followed by CBS’s The Bold and the Beautiful at 14, CBS’s The Young and the Restless at 13 and Peacock’s Days of Our Lives at 11, tying Clarkson.

The categories look decidedly different this year as NATAS has shuffled them around to better accommodate streaming platforms and the declining relevance of the daypart. 

Besides Barrymore — whose CBS produced-and-distributed show went to two half-hours in most markets this season, an experiment that seems to have paid off — and Clarkson, other nominees for best daytime talker are Jennifer Hudson, Disney’s Live with Kelly and Ryan (which since April 24 is Live with Kelly and Mark)  and NBC’s Today with Hoda and Jenna, the only network show on the list.

Other nominated talk hosts are Tamron Hall of Disney’s The Tamron Hall Show, Sherri Shepherd of Debmar-Mercury’s Sherri and Live’s Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest. 

Talk used to be a large enough category that it was divided into two — informational talk and entertainment talk — but the genre has condensed enough that the categories were re-merged. 

The Daytime Emmys will also honor two long-running daytime talkers that are departing: CBS Media Ventures’ Dr. Phil and Rachael Ray.  

Nominated daytime dramas are Popstar! TV’s The Bay, CBS’s The Bold and the Beautiful, NBC and Peacock’s Days of Our Lives, ABC’s General Hospital and CBS’ The Young and the Restless. This year, the Daytime Emmys are also honoring two daytime drama vets — General Hospital and The Young and the Restless. 

Nominated court shows are Debmar-Mercury’s Caught in Providence; CBS’s Hot Bench; ABC’s Judge Steve Harvey, which airs in primetime; Freevee’s Judy Justice, starring Judge Judy Sheindlin; and Warner Bros.’ The People’s Court, which is ending its run this season.

Nominated entertainment news magazines are NBCUniversal’s Access Hollywood, E! News, CBS’ Entertainment Tonight, Warner Bros.’ Extra and CBS’ Inside Edition.

The Daytime Emmys now also include many genre categories that air across streaming and cable platforms, including culinary series; lifestyle programs; travel, nature and adventure series; instructional and how-to; arts and popular culture.

Last year, NATAS spun off kids and family shows into their own separate awards ceremony.

NATAS and CBS have signed a two-year deal for CBS to broadcast the show, with the 51st edition slated to air on CBS in 2024.

This year’s ceremony will take place at the Westin Bonaventure in downtown Los Angeles. 

“We are thrilled to be back with our incredible broadcast partner CBS for two years,” Adam Sharp, president and CEO of NATAS, said in a statement. “In commemorating the show’s golden anniversary this year, we look forward to honoring and celebrating the beloved world of daytime television.”

“CBS has a storied history in daytime and we are delighted to continue having the Daytime Emmys on the Network for the next two years,” Mackenzie Mitchell, VP of specials, music and live events at CBS, said, also in a statement. 

The Daytime Emmys returned to broadcast television during the pandemic in 2020, with the show airing on CBS with all hosts, presenters and recipients appearing on Zoom. Prior to that, the Daytime Emmys hadn’t aired on a broadcast network since 2011, when it last ran on CBS. In 2012 and 2013, the show was broadcast on HLN and in 2014 it was streamed at DaytimeEmmys.net. The show moved to Pop TV in 2015.

After that, the Daytime Emmys was streamed on YouTube, Facebook and KNEKT-TV until 2020 when quarantine conditions caused the stoppage of all live-action production. Broadcast networks needed content, and that opened the door to the Daytime Emmys’ return to broadcast television.

The Daytime Emmys have recognized outstanding achievement in television programming and crafts since 1974, honoring work across daytime dramas, talk, court and game shows, entertainment magazines and more. In 2021, NATAS and the Television Academy, which handles the Primetime Emmys, realigned the awards by content genre instead of program airtime. In 2022, NATAS broke children’s and family programming into its awards ceremony. All awards are judged by a pool of peers from across the TV industry.

The Daytime Emmys will be emceed by Entertainment Tonight hosts Kevin Frazier and Nischelle Turner,CBS and the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences said Monday. The duo are the first Black pair to lead an entertainment newsmagazine and Turner is the first Black woman to host CBS Media Ventures’ access magazine. 

The 49th annual awards show will air live on Friday, June 24 at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT on CBS and will stream on Paramount Plus. 

The Daytime Emmys return to a live format at the Pasadena Civic Center in Pasadena, Calif., after two years of virtual ceremonies due to the pandemic. The show also departed broadcast for several years, before returning to CBS in 2020. The show has aired a total of 16 times on CBS.

Last year, New York City-based NATAS and the Los Angeles-based Television Academy said they were realigning the Daytime and Primetime Emmy Awards to be organized by content genre, as opposed to scheduled program airtime, which makes less sense in an environment dictated by streaming and on-demand programming. This year will be the first time that children’s programming will be moved into its own ceremony, the Children’s and Family Emmy Awards.

The Daytime Emmys returned to broadcast television in 2020, when the show aired on CBS with all hosts, presenters and recipients appearing on Zoom during the height of the pandemic lockdown. Prior to that, the Daytime Emmys hadn’t aired on a broadcast network since 2011, when it last ran on CBS. In 2012 and 2013, it aired on HLN and the show moved to Pop TV in 2015.

After that, the show moved to online streams on such platforms as YouTube, Facebook and KNEKT-TV. But with the quarantine causing the stoppage of all live-action production, broadcast networks needed content, which opened the door to the Daytime Emmys’ return to broadcast television.

The Creative Arts and Lifestyle Emmys will stream live at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT on Saturday, June 18, at WatchTheEmmys.TV and via The Emmys apps for iOS, tvOS, Android, FireTV and Roku (see the full list at full list at apps.theemmys.tv).

Kelly Clarkson was this year’s most-Emmy nominated syndicated show, with nine total nominations, followed by Drew Barrymore with six, according to the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS), which released the 49th Daytime Emmy nominations on Thursday.

Besides NBCUniversal’s Kelly Clarkson and CBS Media Ventures’ Drew Barrymore, also nominated outstanding entertainment talk show were Complex Networks’ Hot Ones, Disney’s Live with Kelly and Ryan, and NBC’s Today with Hoda & Jenna. Not nominated in this category is Warner Bros.’ once-dominant Ellen DeGeneres, in its 19th and final season, although the host of that show stopped entering the competition in 2010 after winning four times. 

Hosts Clarkson, Barrymore, Live’s Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest, Today’s Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager all were nominated for outstanding entertainment talk-show hosts.

On the informative talk side, nominees are ABC’s GMA3: What You Need to Know, Disney’s Tamron Hall and Disney Plus’ Turning the Tables with Robin Roberts, and Facebook Watch’s Peace of Mind with Taraji P. Henson, Red Table Talk, led by Jada Pinkett-Smith, and Red Table Talk: The Estefans, starring Gloria Estefan and her family. More traditional syndicated talkers — such as CBS’s Dr. Phil and Rachael Ray — were left out of this category. 

Nominated for outstanding informative talk hosts were Gloria, Emily and Lili Estefan for Red Table Talk: The Estefans; the hosts of ABC’s The View, Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, Sara Haines, Ana Navarro and Meghan McCain; Tamron Hall; Henson and Tracie Jade for Peace of Mind with Taraji; and Roberts for Turning the Tables.

Both NBC’s Days of Our Lives and Peacock’s Days’ spinoff, Beyond Salem, were nominated outstanding daytime drama series, the first time a show and its spinoff have both been nominated. Also grabbing nods were CBS’ The Bold and the Beautiful and The Young and the Restless and ABC’s General Hospital. Last year, General Hospital won this prize.

Nominated for outstanding entertainment news series were the four stalwarts of the genre: CBS’s Inside Edition and Entertainment Tonight as well as NBCU’s Access Hollywood and Warner Bros.’s Extra.  

Among the game shows, all three syndicated leaders — CBS’ Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune and Debmar-Mercury’s Family Feud — were nominated, as well as CBS’s daytime games, The Price is Right and Let’s Make a Deal. Only three of those shows’ hosts made the cut, however, with Wayne Brady nominated outstanding game-show host for Let’s Make a Deal, as well as Family Feud’s Steve Harvey and Wheel of Fortune’s Pat Sajak for both Wheel of Fortune and Celebrity Wheel of Fortune. Sneaking into this category was Leah Remini for hosting Game Show Network’s People Puzzler. Jeopardy! guest hosts Ken Jennings and Mayim Bialik did not score nominations and neither did The Price is Right’s Drew Carey.

Judge Judy Sheindlin, whos show, Judge Judy, was snubbed by the Daytime Emmys for many years, managed to score a nomination for her new program, IMDbTV’s (now Freevee) Judy Justice, which was just renewed for a second season by the service. Also nominated for outstanding courtroom/legal program are the formerly syndicated Caught in Providence, which now airs on Facebook Watch, as well as Warner Bros.’ Judge Mathis and The People’s Court.

The 49th annual Daytime Emmys air live on CBS Friday, June 24.

The Daytime Emmys are returning to CBS for the third straight year where the show will air live Friday, June 24 at 9 p.m. ET, and will stream live and on demand on Paramount Plus, said CBS and the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) on Tuesday. 

This marks the 16th time the Daytime Emmys have aired on CBS, after the show – which honors network daytime, syndicated and online shows – went through several years of not being aired on a linear network.

The ceremony, which will be the first time that it is held live since 2019, will take place at the Pasadena Civic Center in Pasadena, Calif., with nominations announced Thursday, May 5. 

Last year, New York City-based NATAS and the Los Angeles-based Television Academy said they were realigning the Daytime and Primetime Emmy Awards to be organized by content genre, as opposed to program airtime, which makes less sense in an environment dictated by streaming and on-demand programming. This year will be the first time that children’s programming will be moved into its own ceremony – the Children’s and Family Emmy Awards.

The Daytime Emmys returned to broadcast in 2020, when the show aired on CBS with all hosts, presenters and recipients appearing on Zoom during the height of the pandemic lockdown. Prior to that, the Daytime Emmys hadn’t aired on a broadcast network since 2011, when it last ran on CBS. In 2012 and 2013, it aired on HLN and the show moved to Pop TV in 2015.

After that, the show moved to online streams on such platforms as YouTube, Facebook and KNEKT-TV. But with the quarantine causing the stoppage of all live-action production, broadcast networks needed content, which opened the door to the Daytime Emmys’ return to broadcast television.

Also on Tuesday, NATAS announced its Lifetime Achievement Honorees across all of its awards categories. 

Technology entrepreneur and partner at JC2 Ventures Yvette Kanouff was awarded the lifetime achievement in television technology at the 73rd Annual Technology and Engineering Emmy Awards, which were held Monday, April 25 at the Wynn Encore in Las Vegas, concurrent with NAB.

Sportscaster Lesley Visser – who has worked on network broadcasts of the Final Four, the Super Bowl, the NBA Finals, the Olympics, the World Series, the Triple Crown, the World Figure Skating Championship and the U.S. Open Tennis tournament – will receive NATAS’ lifetime achievement in sports television at the 43rd Annual Sports Emmy Awards at New York City’s Lincoln Center on Tuesday, May 24.

TV show This Old House joins only two other TV programs – Sesame Street and 60 Minutes – to be awarded lifetime achievement awards from NATAS. This Old House will receive this honor at the 49th Annual Daytime Creative Arts and Lifestyle Emmys on Saturday, June 18 at the Pasadena Convention Center in Pasadena, Calif.

The following week, Days of Our Lives’ veteran John Aniston will be given his lifetime achievement award at the 49th Annual Daytime Emmys, also in Pasadena. 

In September, PBS NewsHour’s Judy Woodruff and natural history filmmaker Sir David Attenborough will receive lifetime achievement awards at the 43rd Annual News and Documentary Emmys at Palladium Times Square in New York City on Wednesday, September 28 for news and Thursday, September 29 for documentary. 

And finally, Reading Rainbow’s LeVar Burton will be awarded NATAS’ first-ever lifetime achievement award for children’s and family programming at the 1st Annual Children’s and Family Emmys on Saturday, December 11 at the Wilshire Ebell Theater in Los Angeles.

“We look forward to honoring this year’s unparalleled class of Lifetime Achievement honorees — each an icon in their craft — and couldn’t be more excited to award the first-ever Children’s & Family Emmys,” Sharp said in a statement. “After two years of virtual ceremonies, we’re overjoyed to once again be together, in-person, to celebrate the best of television.” 

The 49th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards is produced by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) and Associated Television International, which produced the Daytime Emmys on The CW in 2009 and on CBS in 2010, 2011, 2020 and 2021. Emmy awards are moving closer to reflecting the reality of the rapidly changing TV industry, with the New York-based National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) and Los Angeles-based Television Academy realigning the Daytime and Primetime Emmy Awards. Going forward, both competitions will be organized by genre as opposed to daypart. In a television-viewing environment in which viewers watch programs largely on demand and on their own schedules, awarding shows by daypart no longer makes sense. 

According to both organizations, the realignment “represents a transition that allows the competitions to reflect consumers’ evolving viewing habits, reduce category overlap and provide clarity on eligibility requirements.”

The Daytime Emmys are the first competition that will receive nominations under the new guidelines. Changes to the Daytime Emmy Awards competition include moving all programs targeting kids 15 and under to NATAS’s recently restructured Children’s & Family competition. 

All scripted programming will compete in the Primetime Emmys, with the exception of daytime dramas, also known as soap operas, which will remain in the Daytime Emmy competition. Those are being redefined to include “any multi-camera, weekday daily serial, spinoff or reboot.” Programming previously awarded in the limited-drama categories of the Daytime competition are being moved to the Primetime Emmys.

Talk shows will remain in both competitions, largely as they are now, with talkers intended for daytime, such as Disney's Live with Kelly and Ryan, competing in the Daytime Emmys and late-night talkers, such as HBO's Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, competing in Primetime. 

Some English- and Spanish-language morning shows, however, will move out of the Daytime competition and into NATAS’ News & Documentary Emmys depending on their format. More talk-oriented morning shows will remain in the Daytime Emmys’ talk categories. 

The academies are still considering where to place game shows and instructional and do-it-yourself programming categories and these types of shows are being considered for realignment for next year. All other categories will be clarified such that content creators will submit to a single competition on the basis of submission genre, irrespective of airtime. 

The academies are committing to spreading out the judging periods for the Daytime, Primetime and Children’s & Family competitions to non-conflicting timelines to allow adequate time for submissions and judging. 

In addition, the Television Academy and NATAS are forming a joint panel that will be charged with making eligibility determinations between competitions and categories. Show producers who are unsure of the competition for which they are eligible or who are petitioning to switch contests will be encouraged to submit to the eligibility review panel prior to submission.

The Daytime Emmys will release its call for submissions in January. ■

NATAS -- the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences -- is splitting off children’s and family categories into their own competition apart from the Daytime Emmys: the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards. This marks the first time the New York-based television awards organization has expanded into a new franchise since 1979 when the sports and news & documentary Emmys were announced. 

Children’s and family-oriented content represent the fastest-growing genres that NATAS covers, with a 23% increase over the past two years, the organization said. In recent years, NATAS  has added seven new categories in the preschool sector alone.

 The Individual Achievement in Animation category received the largest number of entries across all NATAS contests, with nearly 300 submissions last year. This change also comes a year after the Television Academy, which handles the Primetime Emmys, and NATAS agreed to consolidate all children’s categories together under the purview of NATAS.  

Winners will continue to be voted upon by both NATAS and Television Academy members in all Children’s and Family categories. NATAS membership consists of more than 18,000 broadcast and media professionals represented in 19 regional chapters across the United States.

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) posthumously nominated Alex Trebek and Larry King for 2021 Daytime Emmy Awards Tuesday.

Jeopardy! host Trebek, who died in November after a battle with pancreatic cancer, received a nod for Outstanding Game Show Host. Also nominated for Outstanding Game Show Host are Wayne Brady (Let's Make a Deal); Steve Harvey (Family Feud); Alfonso Ribeiro (Catch 21); and Pat Sajak (Wheel of Fortune). Trebek has already taken home the Emmy in the category seven times.

King was nominated for Outstanding Informative Talk Show Host for Larry King Now on Ora TV. The category is rounded out by Gloria Estefan, Emily Estefan and Lili Estefan (Red Table Talk: The Estefans); Tamron Hall (Tamron Hall); Taraji P. Henson and Traci Jade (Peace of Mind with Taraji); Rachael Ray (Rachael Ray); Amy Robach, Dr. Jennifer Ashton, and TJ Holmes (GMA3: What You Need to Know); and Jada Pinkett Smith, Willow Smith, and Adrienne Banfield-Norris (Red Table Talk). King, who has won one Emmy, died in January at 87.

ABC daytime staple General Hospital took the most show nominations with 21. NBC's Days of Our Lives, CBS's The Young and the Restless, and CBS's The Bold and The Beautiful received 11, 10, and 9 nods, respectively. All four are up for the top drama prize.

Of all the nominated networks and streamers, Netflix topped at 32 followed by CBS, ABC and NBC at 29, 25, and 17 nominations apiece. 

The 48th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards will air on CBS June 25 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. It will also be streamed on Paramount Plus.

The Daytime Emmys will return to CBS this year, with the network and the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) announcing Thursday announcing a two-year deal to host the broadcast. This will be the first time since 2008 that the same broadcast network has aired both the Daytime and the Primetime Emmys.

The 48th annual Daytime Emmy Awards, which will again be produced virtually, will air Friday, June 25 on CBS at 8 p.m. ET/PT. The show also will be available to stream live and watch on demand on ViacomCBS’ streaming service Paramount+. 

The virtually-produced awards ceremony also aired last year on CBS and was hosted by the hosts of The Talk -- Sharon Osbourne (who has since been ousted from the show over comments perceived to be racist), Sheryl Underwood, Eve, Carrie Ann Inaba and Marie Osmond.

The Daytime Emmys, which are produced by the New York City-based NATAS and Associated Television International (ATI), have struggled to find a broadcast partner for more than a decade, although the show did air on CBS last summer. CBS -- which is the most-viewed network in daytime and airs such stalwarts as The Bold and the Beautiful, The Young and the Restless and The Price is Right -- along with its partner platforms can take advantage of the Daytime Emmys as a marketing vehicle.

 The show's return to CBS in 2020 was the first time it had aired on a major network in nine years and the first time it had been on TV in five, when it was broadcast on ViacomCBS-owned Pop TV. In 2012 and 2013, the Daytime Emmys aired on cable network HLN. From 2016 - 2019, the program streamed online via YouTube, Facebook and KNEKT-TV.

In 2020, the CBS broadcast averaged 3.1 million viewers and a 0.3 rating among adults 18-49, according to CBS.

The show will be produced by NATAS and ATI with Adam Sharp and Steve Ulrich executive producing via NATAS and ATI’s David McKenzie executive producing and directing.

When most people think of the Emmys, they think of the Primetime Emmys, which are run by the TV Academy in Los Angeles. But the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) in New York runs a slew of Emmy awards programs for all other types of television programming, including news, sports, technology and daytime, which includes syndication and digital programming. 

So while the show will go on in some format for the Primetime Emmys on Sept. 20, everything has changed for the other Emmys, with those shows going virtual for the rest of the year. One exciting change for NATAS is the return of the Daytime Emmys to CBS, where the ceremony last aired in 2011. 

NATAS president and CEO Adam Sharp joins B+C contributor Paige Albiniak to discuss how the dominoes fell when the shutdowns started and where he expects to end up.

When the stay-at-home orders came down, what was your first thought about the Daytime Emmys? My initial thought wasn’t specific to daytime because we also produce tech and engineering, sports and news and documentary Emmys. When we first started hearing about the shutdown, those were the immediate focus. Across all of our events, it became very clear it was going to be a tough time to be in the large public event business. 

After a few weeks, it also became clear that getting a few thousand people in a room together was not going to happen this year. This is supposed to be a moment of celebration, not one where you should show up fearing for your life. Optimism gave way to practical reality. 

The Daytime Emmys will be virtual and broadcast on CBS but they will be pre-recorded, not live. What does that mean for the show? It’s something that has challenges but also opportunities. There are challenges around maintaining the excitement of the reveal when the show isn’t live.

On the flip side, this is a massive opportunity. We can produce a ceremony that is a lot more intimate. Most awards shows are historically big spectacles. This year, everything has to be small. It also allows for a quicker pace. It’s amazing what you can do when you don’t have to spend half the time watching people walk down the aisles. 

How did the conversations happen about bringing the show back to broadcast and to CBS? That was a conversation that predated COVID by many months. We had started having conversations with CBS last fall primarily around the very traditional ceremony that we do in June. Those discussions had been well advanced by the time COVID came around and were put on hold as we tried to figure out what this new world looked like. But everyone recognized that there was still a viable event here. And daytime remains a priority for CBS — they have the most robust network-owned daytime schedule. 

It seems like there is new excitement around daytime that had been thought to be lost. Do you feel that and if so, why do you think that is? I think there’s a few different drivers for that. Our competitions saw their highest number of entries ever this year, beating the record set the previous year. Part of that is the explosion of content, and not just broadcast dramas. Streaming programming has really opened the floodgates for daytime-style programming. 

For the broadcast dramas, there’s a recognition that the misperceived decline was not a commentary on the quality of the programming so much as it was the changing demographics of our country. 

The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful are among the most successful shows on CBS All Access, outrating much of primetime. The audience is still engaged with those stories. We’ve seen that in a lot of other aspects of programming as well, where patterns in society shifted one way, technology reacted to those patterns and then content caught up with that technology.

What do you see as the silver lining in all of this? It’s the opportunity to experiment with the form and not be tied to the sacred-cow playbook of what an awards ceremony should look like. There are aspects of these shows this year that when we are done, we may keep as part of the form going forward. The real success is not people saying they made lemonades out of lemons, but that this environment let them come up with something cool we want to see again.

Sharon Osbourne, Sheryl Underwood, Eve, Carrie Ann Inaba and Marie Osmond -- hosts of CBS’ daytime talker, The Talk -- will emcee the 47th Annual Daytime Emmys when the show airs on CBS on Friday, June 26, CBS and the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) said Thursday.

The awards show, which will be produced with participants in remote locations, is returning to broadcast TV for the first time since 2011 and to TV in general for the first time since 2015, when it aired on ViacomCBS-owned Pop TV.

Underwood has been hosting the show with Access Hollywood’s Mario Lopez since 2016.

The Daytime Emmys honor shows that air in daytime and other dayparts and come from broadcast networks, streaming services and syndication. The show is being produced this year by NATAS’ Adam Sharp and Steve Ulrich and ATI’s David McKenzie.

The Daytime Emmys broadcast will concurrently be live-streamed on CBS All Access and then be available to watch on demand for 30 days afterwards on CBS.com, CBS All Access and on the CBS app.

All of the other nominations for outstanding digital daytime drama went to Amazon, with Studio City also receiving eight, followed by The Bay The Series and Dark/Web with seven each, and 2019’s winner, After Forever, with six. 

NBCUniversal’s rookie talk show The Kelly Clarkson Show led all syndicated talkers with seven nominations, including outstanding entertainment talk show. ABC’s The View scored the most nominations in talk with eight. Other nominations in this category are Warner Bros.’ Ellen DeGeneres, which brought home its 11th Daytime Emmy win in this category last year, along with Disney’s Live with Kelly and Ryan, The Talk and ABC’s Strahan, Sara & Keke.

Games is a mixed category with two kids’ games -- Nick’s Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader and Double Dare -- making the cut along with syndication’s game leaders, CTD’s Jeopardy! and last year’s winner, Debmar-Mercury’s Family Feud. CBS’ Let’s Make A Deal rounds out the list.

Nominees for outstanding game-show host include last year’s winner and Lifetime Achievement Award winner Jeopardy!’s Alex Trebek and Wheel of Fortune’s Pat Sajak. Stalwarts Trebek and Sajak are joined by Feud’s Steve Harvey, Let’s Make a Deal’s Wayne Brady and Alfonso Ribeiro of GSN’s Catch 21.

CBS is welcoming back the Daytime Emmys after nine years, broadcasting the awards ceremony on Friday, June 26.

CBS will air the 47th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards on Friday, June 26, CBS and the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) said Wednesday.

The show will be produced with hosts, announcers, recipients and other guests all appearing from home. Some categories will be announced on air, while others will be announced simultaneously on Twitter at the Daytime Emmys’ handle @DaytimeEmmys. Creative arts categories will be presented in a separate ceremony in July.

“As a leader in daytime, we are thrilled to welcome back the Daytime Emmy Awards,” Jack Sussman, CBS executive vice president, specials, music and live events, said in a statement. “Daytime television has been keeping viewers engaged and entertained for many years, so it is with great pride that we look forward to celebrating the best of the genre here on CBS.”

NATAS had planned to hold a three-night gala event in Pasadena, California, in June but that was canceled, along with everything else, due to stay-at-home orders in Los Angeles.

For the past five years, the Daytime Emmys have been unable to secure a broadcast or cable partner due to being unable to gather a large enough audience to make the show economically viable. The Daytime Emmys haven’t aired on a broadcast network since 2011, when it last ran on CBS. In 2012 and 2013, it aired on HLN and the show moved to Pop TV in 2015.

Since then, the show had moved to online streams on such platforms as YouTube, Facebook and KNEKT-TV. But with the quarantine causing the stoppage of all live-action production, broadcast networks need content, which opened the door to the Daytime Emmys’ return to broadcast television.

We’re delighted to join with CBS in celebrating the programs and professionals who never cease to brighten our days.”

Nominations for the Daytime Emmys for years have been announced exclusively on CBS’ The Talk, and that continues this year with nominations released Thursday, May 21. That will be followed by an online release at ETonline.com. 

The Daytime Emmys honor both network and syndicated shows that air in daytime and other dayparts, including access. It also honors some streaming programs, such as streaming soap operas and children's programs.

CBS remains strongly in the daytime business, programming soap operas The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful and game shows Price is Right and Let’s Make A Deal as well as The Talk.

Food Network’s Barefoot Contessa: Back To Basics was cable’s lone winner during the 42 Annual Daytime Awards ceremony Sunday night.

The series won for Outstanding Culinary Program, beating out fellow stablemates Guy’s Big Bite from Food Network and Cooking Channel’s My Grandmother’s Ravioli, as well as PBS’ Martha Bakes and The Mind of A Chef.

Overall CBS won seven Daytime Emmys during the telecast, followed by syndicated programming with five statuettes and ABC and NBC at four and two Emmys respectively.

Iconic actress Betty White was presented with the lifetime achievement award during the awards ceremony, which was aired by POP network and hosted by Tyra Banks.

The Daytime Emmys are popping back onto TV.

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and Pop, nee TV Guide Network, will televise live the 42nd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards on Sunday, April 26 at 8 p.m. (ET). Deal terms were not disclosed. 

The announcement follows the event being streamed on DaytimeEmmys.net last year. In 2012 and 2013, the show aired on HLN.

Televised from the Warner Bros. Studios lot on Stage 16 – the location of such Hollywood theatricals as Casablanca,Jurassic Park and Ghostbusters – the 42nd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards show will be executive-produced by Michael Levitt.

“Our new partnership with the Pop network is an ideal platform to present our signature gala,” said NATAS president Bob Mauro. “With the Warner Bros Studios as our venue, where so many great films and television shows have been made, coupled together with Michael Levitt, our executive producer, who created the TV Land Awards, and has produced numerous live event specials, including ‘The Producers Guild Awards, ‘The Billboard Music Awards, and ‘E! Live from the Red Carpet’ shows for the Golden Globes and Oscars, this promises to be a very special telecast of the 42nd  Annual Daytime Emmy Awards.”

In addition, NATAS announced that the Daytime Creative Arts Emmy Awards gala will take place on Friday, April 24 at the Universal Hilton in Los Angeles.
