In advance of its upfront presentation, ABC has renewed American Idol for season eight, The Bachelor for season 29, Celebrity Jeopardy! for season three, Celebrity Wheel of Fortune for season five, Dancing with the Stars for season 33, Shark Tank for season 16, and What Would You Do? for season 17. 

The Conners has been renewed for season seven, which will be its final one. 

Comedy Not Dead Yet, starring Gina Rodriguez as an obituary writer with a unique knack for the job, has not been renewed. The show, created by David Windsor and Casey Johnson, debuted in February 2023 and lasted for two seasons. 

ABC shows off its 2024-25 series at the Disney upfront presentation May 14 in New York. 

Previously announced renewals are season four for Abbott Elementary, season eight for 9-1-1, season 21 for Grey’s Anatomy, season seven for The Rookie and season three for Will Trent. Previously announced orders include Doctor Odyssey and High Potential. 

Decisions on pilots Shifting Gears (working title) and Forgive & Forget have not yet been made. 

Dancing With the Stars salutes Taylor Swift when “A Celebration of Taylor Swift” takes place Tuesday, November 21. The contestants will dance to Swift songs, and Mandy Moore, Dancing With the Stars choreographer and lead choreographer of Swift’s The Eras tour, will be the special guest judge. 

Six contestant couples will remain. 

Fans will be able to vote during the live simulcast of the show in the Eastern and Central time zones. During this time, online voting will be available to fans anywhere in the U.S., its territories and Canada via dwtsvote.abc.com. 

Dancing with the Stars is on ABC. Alfonso Ribeiro and Julianne Hough host the show, and Carrie Ann Inaba, Bruno Tonioli and Derek Hough are the judges. 

The show is produced in front of a live audience by BBC Studios Los Angeles Productions.

Movie Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour showcases, as the title indicates, Swift’s world tour, which began in March and is broken up into the various eras of the pop star’s career. 

Supermodel Tyson Beckford, TV star Alyson Hannigan and the actor who played Greg Brady, Barry Williams, are lined up for season 32 of Dancing With the Stars. The show starts Tuesday, September 26 on ABC.

Other contestants are actress Xochitl Gomez, reality TV star Harry Jowsey, Bachelorette Charity Lawson, Vanderpump Rules star Ariana Madix, singer Jason Mraz, former NFL standout Adrian Peterson, singer Lele Pons, actress Mira Sorvino, actress Jamie Lynn Spears, real estate mogul/reality star Mauricio Umansky and comedian Matt Walsh. 

Beckford has modeled for Polo and Pirelli. Hannigan was in How I Met Your Mother on CBS and the American Pie film franchise. Gomez played America Chavez in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Jowsey was in the Netflix show Too Hot to Handle. Lawson was on season 27 of The Bachelor and was The Bachelorette on the most recent season. 

Madix is a bartender as well as a reality TV star. Mraz’s hit song is “I’m Yours.” Peterson was a running back for the Minnesota Vikings. Pons, from Venezuela, made her name on social media. Sorvino’s movies include Summer of Sam and Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion. Spears played Zoey Brooks in Zoey 101. 

Umansky is founder and CEO of real estate firm The Agency. Walsh has been in Veep on HBO and Unplugging on Hulu. Williams wrote the book Growing Up Brady: I Was a Teenage Greg.

The show was a Disney Plus original last season, but is back on ABC, while also streaming on Disney Plus. 

Ariana Madix, star of Vanderpump Rules, will be in the season 32 cast of Dancing With the Stars. The full cast will be announced on Good Morning America September 13. 

Dancing with the Stars runs in the fall on ABC and Disney Plus. The premiere date has not been shared.

Madix and Hough announced her involvement on Good Morning America July 7. An actress, Madix joined reality show Vanderpump Rules in season two. During season ten, which aired earlier this year, it was revealed that Madix’s boyfriend, Tom Sandoval, cheated on her with cast member Raquel Leviss. The hashtag #Scandoval was born. 

Vanderpump Rules is on Bravo. 

Madix has appeared in comedies Dads, Anger Management and The Other Two.

Dancing with the Stars is returning to ABC after a season on corporate sibling Disney Plus. Season 32 will air on ABC and stream on Disney Plus simultaneously, the reports said. Dancing episodes will also appear on Hulu a day after they are on ABC.

Dancing spent 30 seasons on ABC prior to its streaming shift for season 31, which began in September 2022. Alfonso Ribeiro joined Tyra Banks as co-host for season 31. 

Banks announced she is departing the show. She replaced Tom Bergeron as host for season 29 in 2020, with Erin Andrews departing as well. Banks came on board Dancing With the Stars as an executive producer.  

Julianne Hough will host alongside Ribeiro. 

“Season 31 gave us the opportunity to introduce Dancing with the Stars to a new generation of fans on Disney Plus, and we are excited to build on that with our partners at ABC and Hulu,” said Alisa Bowen, president, Disney Plus. “We’re looking forward to giving our viewers a front-row seat to the dance floor on another great season of the first-ever live series on Disney Plus.”

Charli D’Amelio won the title in season 31.

Len Goodman, a longtime judge on Dancing With the Stars, has died at age 78. He had suffered from cancer and died April 22 in Kent, England. His agent said Goodman “passed away peacefully.”

Goodman was a judge on BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing in the U.K. from 2004 to 2016, and was head judge on Dancing with the Stars on ABC, then Disney Plus, from 2007 to 2022. 

Dancing with the Stars shifted to the streaming platform for season 31. 

Goodman was a judge on Dancing with the Stars along with Carrie Ann Inaba, Bruno Tonioli and Derek Hough. BBC Studios Los Angeles Productions produces the show. 

Tonioli shared on Twitter: “Hart broken my dear friend and partner for 19 years the one and only ballroom LEGEND #LenGoodman passed away I will treasure the memories of our adventures @bbcstrictly @officialdwts there will never be anyone like you you will always be my perfect 10.”

Julianne Hough will be the co-host on season 32 of Dancing With the Stars, joining Alfonso Ribeiro. Hough succeeds Tyra Banks, who announced her departure last week. 

The show returns to Disney Plus in the fall. 

Carrie Ann Inaba, Bruno Tonioli and Derek Hough will return as judges.

Hough joined Dancing with the Stars as a professional dancer in 2007 and became a judge in 2014, a role she played for three seasons. Hough made her Broadway debut last year in POTUS: Or, Behind Every Great Dumbass Are Seven Women Trying to Keep Him Alive. She hosted the 75th Tony Awards last year as well, with Darren Criss. 

Her acting credits include Safe Haven, Footloose and Rock of Ages. Hough was a judge on America’s Got Talent too, for season 14.

Banks departed Dancing to focus on her entrepreneurial ventures. ■

Tyra Banks, host of Dancing With the Stars, is departing the show. Banks told TMZ she is exiting the program to put more energy into her entrepreneurial endeavours, and into producing television. 

“I feel it’s time for me to focus on my business,” she said. 

A former supermodel, Banks replaced Tom Bergeron as host for season 29 in 2020, with Erin Andrews departing as well. Banks came on board Dancing With the Stars as an executive producer. The show shifted to Disney Plus from ABC for season 31, which premiered in fall 2022. 

Alfonso Ribeiro joined Banks as co-host last year. Charli D’Amelio won the Dancing title.

Banks was previously the host of America’s Next Top Model on The CW, which she created and produced, and America’s Got Talent on NBC, for seasons 12-13. Banks graduated from the Owner/President Management program at Harvard Business School in 2012. 

Approached outside Whole Foods Market in Santa Monica, she told TMZ she’s going “from the ballroom to the boardroom.” Her business ventures include Smize & Dream ice cream and a new business TV show. 

“I really, really want to focus on business,” Banks said, “and you can’t do that, hosting a show.”

The launch of a new series from the Star Wars Universe as well as the streaming premiere of a long-running broadcast network competition series lead the list of original TV content debuting during the first week of fall.

Disney Plus' original series Andor debuts September 21. The series takes place prior to the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and brings forward the tale of the burgeoning rebellion against the Empire and how people and planets became involved, according to the streaming service.

Disney Plus on September 19 will debut the 31st season of former ABC reality series Dancing with the Stars. Tyra Banks and Alfonso Ribeiro co-host the series, which this season features such celebrities as Selma Blair, Wayne Brady, Cheryl Ladd and Jordin Sparks.

Disney Plus shared premiere dates during its TCA press tour event August 3, including the debut of Dancing with the Stars September 19. Tyra Banks and Alfonso Ribeiro host. 

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law starts August 18. Tatiana Maslany plays Jennifer Walters, who is navigating the complicated life of a single, 30-something attorney who also happens to be a superpowered hulk. There are nine episodes. Mark Ruffalo and Tim Roth are also in the cast. 

Growing Up begins September 8. The docuseries comes from Brie Larson and looks at the challenges and complexities of adolescence through ten coming-of-age stories. 

Also starting September 8 is Epic Adventures with Bertie Gregory. National Geographic Explorer Gregory takes viewers on journeys into the wild. 

Dancing with the Stars begins season 31 on Disney Plus September 19 after 30 seasons on ABC. It is the first live series to debut on Disney Plus. Dancing got a two-season pickup on the streaming network. 

September 21 is Super/Natural. Executive produced by James Camerson and narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch, the series reveals the “secret powers and super-senses” of animals. 

Season two of The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers is on Disney Plus September 28. Lauren Graham and Josh Duhamel star.

Alfonso Ribeiro has joined Dancing with the Stars as co-host, with Tyra Banks returning as host. Ribeiro, host of America’s Funniest Home Videos on ABC, won season 19 of Dancing. 

The show has moved to Disney Plus after 30 seasons on ABC. The season 31 premiere date has not been announced. 

Judges Len Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba, Bruno Tonioli and Derek Hough all return.

“Dancing with the Stars has been such an important part of my life for so many years, and I am ecstatic to officially rejoin this tight-knit family as co-host,” Ribeiro said. “Tyra and I have a longstanding friendship that I hope will resonate with all of the fans at home as we kick off this new season on Disney Plus.”

Banks is an executive producer on Dancing as well. 

“I’ve known Alfonso since I was 19 years old and he always puts a smile on my face whenever I see him,” Banks said. “Having such a fun-loving, longtime friend as co-host warms my heart. Plus, he’s won the competition before, so he knows exactly what the stars are going through. Bantering back and forth with him live is going to be so much fun!” 

Ribeiro also hosts America’s Funniest Home Videos: Animal Edition on Nat Geo Wild. As a teen, he was on sitcom Silver Spoons, and later was on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. He’s been a director on In the House, Shake It Up and Are We There Yet?, among other programs.

When The Walt Disney Co. announced Friday it was moving Dancing with the Stars from ABC after 30 seasons to Disney Plus, it underscored how media companies are prioritizing streaming at the expense of traditional media, including the broadcast networks.

For the network‘s affiliates — allegedly partners — it was the latest slight. The networks promote how easy it is to find their shows on their own direct-to-consumer services, Disney’s Hulu and Disney Plus or NBCUniversal’s Peacock, even though the affiliates are paying substantial program fees to the networks for those shows.

The timing of Disney‘s latest move is an interesting piece of choreography. The National Association of Broadcasters will be holding the NAB Show in Las Vegas later this month and networks will be meeting with their affiliates there, setting up an interesting opportunity to tango.

“Dancing with the Stars will definitely be a topic at the meetings,” said a source at one major station group.

Some mostly smaller affiliates with traditional sensibilities are expected to be quite angry about this latest indignity. Larger station groups see it as part of a long-term trend affecting the network-affiliate relationship as TV turns to streaming. Either way, there are issues that need to be addressed.

Just as the media giants stepped over theaters by putting their movies on HBO Max and Disney Plus, slowly but surely broadcast content is heading in the same direction.

When NBCU introduced Peacock, it said episodes of the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and Late Night with Seth Meyers would be available to premium subscribers before they appear on broadcast. (Some affiliates bristled at the plan and that feature was delayed by the pandemic.) Some NBC sitcoms that might have otherwise been canceled — AP Bio, for example — can also be found on Peacock.

NBCU also made Peacock the home of its Olympics coverage, contributing to plunging ratings on the network and at its affiliated stations.

Paramount, formerly ViacomCBS, has moved some series that were popular with CBS viewers from the broadcast network to its streaming service, Paramount Plus. Those include SEAL Team and Evil.

Disney’s Dancing with the Stars two-step continues in those footsteps.

As this is going on, it’s important to remember that, unlike the old days when networks paid affiliates to broadcast their show -- and commercials -- affiliates these days pay programming fees to the network in return for being able to run primetime programming and sports. These fees suck up a big chunk of the revenue the station groups get from cable and satellite operators after they negotiate retransmission fees.

Are the networks going to reduce their demands for affiliate payments as good programming shifts from broadcast to streaming? “Good question,” said one station group executive.

Network shows like Dancing with the Stars benefit from the promotion local stations give them. The stations often work with the network to find contestants from their own market, and use their newscast to hype a flamenco favorite from Fresno. That music may stop.

The networks and affiliates also have to continue to work out how they share payments from streaming virtual multichannel video programming distributors like YouTube TV and Disney’s Hulu Plus Live TV. Those vMVPDs negotiate retrans rights directly with the networks, rather than needing to go market by market, station by station.

News presents yet another issue. The networks have their streaming services and increasingly station groups are creating their own streaming apps, creating new competition and tension. Many stations have signed up to have their news content streamed on national services like VUit, partly owned by Gray Television, and Sinclair Broadcast Group’s Stirr.

Overall, stations are pumping up local news, their most profitable programming, because they retain and sell all of the advertising time. They are programming more and longer newscasts, which has put the squeeze on the syndication arms of the big media companies.

As this over-the-top dance plays out, station owners might get a chance to lead, thanks to the next big change in technology. At least that’s what station buyers like Standard General (backed by Apollo Global) and Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group are counting on.

Since the advent of digital broadcasting, station groups large and small have been launching their own national networks on their secondary broadcast channels. Weigel Broadcasting’s MeTV and E.W. Scripps’ Grit and Bounce TV, draw bigger audiences than cable channels like LMN, CMT, HLN, Science Channel or OWN.

In addition to Weigel and Scripps, station groups Sinclair Broadcast Group, Tegna, Nexstar Media Group and Allen Media Group own and distribute multiple diginets.

That trend is likely to expand greatly as NextGen broadcast technology gets adopted by consumers. NextGen TV, using the ATSC 3.0 format, enables stations to broadcast many more diginets on their signals, so there will be more of them.

And while those diginets now mostly carry network reruns, some, like Bounce TV, already carry the kind of original programming that used to appear only on broadcast and cable channels. As their audience — and ad revenues — grow, it’s only a matter of time before they’re producing more of their own dramas and sitcoms.

As media companies gamble on a streaming future, broadcast stations might still be worth betting on, too.  ■

A stalwart on the ABC schedule for 16 years and 30 cycles, Disney announced last week that reality competition series Dancing with the Stars will move to Disney Plus for its 31st iteration this fall. 

Gauging what it means to the broader shift from broadcast to streaming, reactions to this particular move are somewhat more polarized than usual. 

LightShed Partners analyst Rich Greenfield, for example, tweeted that the move marked a "watershed moment," proving Disney CEO Bob Chapek and his team are "all-in" in regards to streaming.

Meanwhile, veteran TV business writer Michael Schneider noted DWTS' steadily eroding linear ratings, which saw a record low 5.6 million viewers tune into the Season 30 finale back in November. Schneider postulates that the shift is just a logical move for an "aging show" at this point in its lifecycle.

Another veteran TV business reporter, Josef Adalian, wondered if the Dancing with the Stars migration fit Disney's longterm agendas as they relate to the launch of ad-supported streaming on Disney Plus later this year, as well as the ultimate fate of Hulu.

After 30 seasons on ABC, Dancing with the Stars is moving to Disney Plus. The competition series will premiere in the fall, making Dancing the first live series to debut on the streaming platform, Disney said.

Dancing got a two-season pickup.

Produced in front of a live audience, the show pairs celebrities with trained ballroom dancers. It premiered in 2005.

Gold medal winner Suni Lee and pop star JoJo Siwa will be on the next season of Dancing with the Stars on ABC. The 30th season begins Sept. 20. The remaining cast will be announced Sept. 8. 

Lee and Siwa will appear on Good Morning America Aug. 27.  

Siwa will dance with a same-sex partner, a first for the show.

Lee won the gold as all-around women's gymnastics champion at the Tokyo Olympics earlier this summer. Born and raised in Minnesota, she starts at Auburn University this fall. She said she would try not to put too much pressure on herself on Dancing, and just have fun. 

A Dance Moms alum, Siwa is a dancer, singer, TV and film star, and social media standout. She called it "a  huge honor to be on this show." Siwa will also be the first star on the show paired with a professional dancer of the same sex.

ABC has shared its 2021-2022 schedule plans. The network takes its turn with an upfront presentation the afternoon of May 18. 

Mondays offer Dancing with the Stars and The Good Doctor. 

Tuesdays have The Bachelorette and new drama Queens, about four women in their 40s who aim to recapture their fame as a ‘90s hip-hop group. Eve, Naturi Naughton, Nadine Velazquez and Taylor Selé are in the cast. 

On Wednesdays, it’s The Goldbergs and The Wonder Years, The Conners, Home Economics and A Million Little Things. Don Cheadle narrates The Wonder Years, an update of the comedy that aired on ABC in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. 

Thursdays, it’s Station 19, Grey’s Anatomy and Big Sky. 

Fridays have Shark Tank and two hours of 20/20. 

Saturdays have Saturday Night Football. 

On Sundays, the schedule has America’s Funniest Home Videos, Celebrity Wheel of Fortune, Supermarket Sweep and The Rookie.

Limited series Women of the Movement will premiere in the mid-season too, focusing on Emmett Till’s mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, and her fight for justice. 

Freshman comedies Maggie and Abbott Elementary start in the mid-season, as does American Idol.

ABC has picked up Dancing With the Stars for its 30th season. Tyra Banks will return as host and Len Goodman, Derek Hough, Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli are expected to return as judges.

ABC has not announced the premiere date or the celebrity contestants for the next season.

Kaitlyn Bristowe of The Bachelorette won season 29 of Dancing, which concluded in November.  That was Banks' first season as host.

ABC won the Monday ratings battle, the Dancing with the Stars finale giving the network the win. ABC got a 0.8 in viewers 18-49, per the Nielsen overnights, and a 4 share. That was just ahead of NBC’s 0.7/4. 

The Dancing finale got a 0.9 from 8 to 10 p.m. Kaitlyn Bristowe, formerly of The Bachelorette, won. The Good Doctor scored a 0.6. Both were up a tenth from last week. 

On NBC, The Voice also went up a tenth to 0.9 for two hours. Weakest Link got a flat 0.5. 

CBS scored a 0.6/3. The Neighborhood lost 11% from its season premiere for a 0.8 and Bob Hearts Abishola tallied a flat 0.6. All Rise and Bull both got a 0.5, All Rise down a tenth and Bull flat. 

Fox, Telemundo and Univision all posted a 0.3/2. On Fox, LA’s Finest and Filthy Rich both got a 0.3, Finest flat and Filthy up a tenth.

On Telemundo, El Domo del Dinero got a 0.2 and Todo Por Mi Hija a 0.4, the pair level with last week. Falsa Identidad shot up 50% to 0.3.

Dancing with the Stars fell 20% to 0.8 from 8 to 10 p.m. and The Good Doctor plummeted 29% to 0.5. 

NBC saw The Voice slide 20% to 0.8 from 8 to 10 and Weakest Link post a level 0.5. 

On CBS, The Neighborhood got a 0.9 and Bob Hearts Abishola a 0.6. Dramas All Rise got a 0.6 and Bull a 0.5. All were season premieres on CBS.

Swapping out Dancing With the Stars host Tom Bergeron for Tyra Banks was about evolution, said Andrew Llinares, Dancing executive producer. Long-running shows run the risk of feeling a bit stale, and personnel changes can offset that. 

Dancing With the Stars premiered in 2005. 

“Changing the host is all about evolution, making the show feel fresh, making the show feel new,” he said Wednesday during ABC’s VirtuFall event. “I think it’s working brilliantly.”

Dancing opened Sept. 14 with a 1.3 in viewers 18-49, its best premiere in three years. The second episode got a 1.0. Season 29 dancers include Carole Baskin of Netflix’s Tiger King, Backstreet Boys singer AJ McLean, former NBA star Charles Oakley and rapper Nelly. 

Llinares said Banks has brought a faster pace to the program. “I think it’s changed the rhythm of the show in a really exciting way,” he said. “I think she’s brought a new light to it.”

Llinares also said that the pandemic has pushed producers to try new things amid an empty studio, such as a new set and updated film packages. “COVID has propelled us creatively to a place we probably wouldn’t have gotten to,” he said. 

Banks is executive producer in addition to being host. Her dramatic costume changes are a new wrinkle to Dancing. She credited stylist Brendon Alexander. “His mind is bananas,” said Banks, former host of America’s Got Talent and America’s Next Top Model. 

“I don’t personally care about fashion,” said the former supermodel. “On that stage, I don’t think I’ve ever had this much fun with fashion on television, including America’s Next Top Model.”

Derek Hough joined the judges’ table this season, with Len Goodman unavailable “in light of current circumstances,” ABC said, presumably the pandemic. “The heart of the show is that relationship between the pro and celebrity and their journey,” said Hough. “The heart is always there and I don’t think it will ever change.”

Llinares said Goodman is “definitely part of the family of the show. Who knows what will happen next year.”

Dancing will offer theme nights in the coming weeks. Oc. 12 is ‘80s Night, celebrating the decade’s music, fashion and movies. “It’s a real ‘80s explosion, which I think will be really fun,” said Llinares. 

Oct. 31 is Villains Night, with dancers dressed as famous fictional bad guys to celebrate Halloween. 

In terms of the ratings increase, Carole Baskin has been a big draw. “People were fascinated with Tiger King, especially during the quarantine,” said Deena Katz, co-executive producer. “Everybody watched the show, everybody talked about the show.”

“There’s a lovely side to Carole,” she added. 

Llinares said people are looking for a bit of fun amid all the misery in the news right now. “It’s a place to make you smile and feel really good for two hours,” he said.

ABC had the winning score in Monday primetime, with Dancing with the Stars leading the Alphabets to a 1.0 in viewers 18-49, per the Nielsen overnights, and a 6 share. That topped NBC’s 0.8/4. 

Two hours of Dancing with the Stars rated a 1.1, up a tenth from last week. New unscripted show Emergency Call, hosted by Luke Wilson and about the people who field 911 calls, posted a 0.7.

NBC had Stanley Cup hockey across prime. 

CBS, Fox, Telemundo and Univision all scored a 0.3/2. CBS had comedy reruns and Love Island at 0.4. Manhunt: Deadly Games got a 0.2. Both lost a tenth of a point.

Two hours of Dancing with the Stars got a 1.0, down from its 1.3 season premiere. The episode moved from Monday when ABC simulcasted Monday Night Football. Special Time100 got a 0.4. 

On NBC, two hours of America’s Got Talent got a 0.8, up a tenth of a point, and Transplant a flat 0.5. 

CBS and Univision both notched a 0.4/2. CBS had repeats of NCIS and FBI: Most Wanted, with a new Love Island in the middle, down 20% for a 0.4. 

Univision had Medicos and Imperio De Mentiras at 0.4 and Dulce Ambicion at 0.3, all three level. 

Fox and Telemundo both scored a 0.3/2. Fox had two hours of Cosmos: Possible Worlds premiering at 0.4 and 0.3.

Derek Hough has joined Dancing with the Stars as a judge, starting when the show kicks off its new season Sept. 14 on ABC. Hough joins Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli at the judges table. Len Goodman is unable to judge live in the ballroom “in light of current circumstances,” said ABC, though “he will still be a part of the show in a different capacity, sharing his ballroom expertise from the UK.”

Hough has been a professional dancer on Dancing with the Stars, partnering with the celebs. He was a judge on NBC’s World of Dance. 

“This show has been and will always be incredibly special to me,” said Hough. “Coming back feels like coming home and I couldn’t be more excited to be back in the ballroom.”

The announcement was made on Good Morning America.

Tom Bergeron, host of Dancing with the Stars on ABC, has left the show. He’s hosted the program for all of its 28 seasons. 

Bergeron shared on Twitter, “Just informed @DancingABC will be continuing without me. It's been an incredible 15 year run and the most unexpected gift of my career. I'm grateful for that and for the lifelong friendships made. That said, now what am I supposed to do with all of these glitter masks?”

Co-host Erin Andrews, who competed on the show in 2010, is also leaving. She came on board in season 18. 

The show airs on Mondays. Season 29 begins in the coming weeks.

Any questions or doubts about who is the greatest gymnast of all time were arguably put to rest in October when Simone Biles earned her record-setting 25th world medal and 19th world gold medal — the most for any gymnast, woman or man — during the 2019 World Championships in Germany.

If that feat wasn’t enough, Biles during the championships executed two never-before-completed skills on the balance beam and floor exercise, respectively, adding to the growing list of now four original gymnastics moves named after her.

Next summer, she will look to build on her G.O.A.T. (greatest of all time) status when she leads the United States women’s gymnastics team into competition at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

In between her eye-popping, medal-winning performances in the gymnastics arena, Biles has found time to build her burgeoning brand within the television industry. Whether it's sliding across the dance floor on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, serving as executive producer on a Lifetime original film about her short but inspiring life or doing a semi-twist backflip before millions of viewers prior to throwing out the ceremonial first pitch during Game 2 of the 2019 World Series, Biles’s incredible athletic prowess continues to amaze and captivate in sports and entertainment.

One-of-a-Kind Resilience

“Aside from the fact that she is indisputably the greatest of all time in this sport, I think that her attitude and determination, the ability the rise above her struggles makes her a one-of-a-kind athlete,” Tia Maggini, vice president of programming for Lifetime Original Movies, said.

Biles, 22, who last week was honored as the E! People’s Choice Awards “Game Changer of 2019,” burst onto the sports scene three years ago as one of the “Final Five” U.S. women’s gymnastics team members who claimed at least one medal in every event during the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. The petite Biles won a record four gold medals in gymnastics while helping NBC generate big ratings for her performances.

Biles’s first gold medal win in the gymnastics team event averaged 33.4 million viewers on Aug. 9, 2016 — NBC’s highest-rated night of its two-week Olympics coverage.

“Simone Biles personifies the Olympic spirit; she is an awe-inspiring and unifying force,” said NBC Sports Group chief marketing officer and executive vice president of content strategy Jenny Storms. “Her fierce dedication, coupled with her warmth and innate ability to motivate and connect with all viewers, demonstrates her unique capacity to transcend the hearts and minds of the broad and diverse Olympic audience.”

Biles’s growing popularity among viewers would also translate outside of the gymnastics arena. In 2017, Biles was chosen as one of the contestants on ABC’s competition series Dancing with the Stars. Deena Katz, the series’ talent booker and co-executive producer, said the show caught lightning in a bottle by booking Biles less than a year after her record-setting Olympics performance.

“I considered Simone America’s sweetheart,” Katz said. “People are attracted to her, amazed and enamored by her, but America didn’t know that much about her. This is a girl America fell in love with and wanted to get to know better, so I was honored when she actually said yes to the show.”

Biles would dance her way into the semifinals, where she was eliminated in what Katz termed a “shocking” decision. “One of the other highest-rated shows that season was the night she got eliminated,” she said. “There was always buzz about her throughout the season. People loved her and she was a fan favorite on the show, so it was one of the more shocking eliminations we’ve ever had. We kind of assumed she would be making it into the finals.”

Last year, Biles served as executive producer of a Lifetime biopic about her life titled The Simone Biles Story: Courage to Soar. Based on Biles’s book Courage to Soar: A Body in Motion, A Life in Balance, the movie chronicled her struggles and triumphs in a fashion that appealed to Lifetime’s core female viewer, Maggini said. The movie premiered in May 2018 to 2.3 million viewers, finishing as one of Lifetime’s most-watched movies of the year, the network said.

“Simone’s story hit on a number of different levels,” Maggini said. “Her personal story about being adopted out of the foster care system was very inspiring and appealing to us, but what we were ultimately attracted to is Simone herself, her talent and her attitude. The fact that she’s able to be as dominant as she is, and yet do it effortlessly with a smile and a giggle, is incredible.”

Biles’s infectious personality, work ethic and near-flawless competitive performances have also helped the sport begin its recovery from the scandal surrounding former USA Gymnastics national team doctor Larry Nassar, who was sentenced to prison in 2018 for sexually abusing hundreds of athletes in his care, including Biles.

Joy of Competition

“One of the things that has been missing from gymnastics recently is a joy in what they are doing, given all that has transpired over the last few years,” said two-time U.S. women’s soccer gold medalist Julie Foudy, who earlier this year interviewed Biles for her ESPN Laughter Permitted podcast. “For her to do what she does with the joy that she does it is remarkable. She brings a joy that I think all gymnasts would love to have, and I think she shows what’s possible in that world.”

After her record-setting World Gymnastics performance, Biles now has the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics in her sights. NBC Sports’ Storms believes the best is yet to come for Biles.

“We look forward to witnessing Simone continue her historic journey in Tokyo, and help share her remarkable story as she lights up the screen with her extraordinary feats and natural charisma,” Storms said.

Added Foudy: “What she’s doing is so fun to watch — she defies gravity in so many different ways. She will be one of the [U.S. Olympics team’s] biggest stars this summer.”

USA Network’s WWE Monday Night Raw series drew the most tweets of any television show on Monday, according to Nielsen.

The live, three-hour primetime show generated 143,000 tweets from 30,000 unique Twitter users, besting second place finisher, VH1’s Love & Hip Hop Atlanta, which drew 81,000 tweets, according to Nielsen’s Twitter TV Ratings report.

NBC’s The Voice was third, followed by ABC’s Dancing With The Stars and VH1’s Black Ink Crew, said network executives.

TNT’s coverage of the Oklahoma City/ San Antonio NBA playoffs game was the most tweeted live sports event, generating 340,000 tweets from 146,000 unique Twitter users, said Nielsen.

The show centers on Milian’s relationship with her controlling mother Carmen, who has been her manager since she was a child, her two opinionated sisters and her daughter Violet.  

With a broken off engagement and the endless battle of a non-stop career, Milian’s life has become more complex. As a new mother working on multiple studio albums, as well as appearances on The Voice and Dancing with the Stars, she plans to take her career up a notch.

She serves as a motivational speaker, the owner of Viva Diva Wines and the creator of the project, Shelby Star.
