Craig Borten, who wrote Dallas Buyers Club (for which he received an Oscar nomination), sold the idea to Syfy and will write the script for the pilot and executive produce along with Peter Chernin and Katherine Pope, Syfy said.

The concept is that the United States buys Greenland to convert into a prison colony, housing male and female inmates together, Syfy said. "Promised conditional freedom, the inmates are driven to the edge of their humanity when that promise, along with others, is broken," Syfy said in a release. "Struggling to seize control and exact revenge, reluctant heroes emerge -- but what exactly are they fighting for?"
