Sinclair Broadcast Group said its operations were disrupted by a cyberattack over the weekend.

Sinclair stations around the country were unable to feed programming to Hulu and other distributors. The problem reportedly did not affect Sinclair’s master control system, allowing the company to replace local programming on some channels with a national feed and stay on the air.

“Sinclair Broadcast Group recently identified a cybersecurity incident involving our network. As a result of the incident, certain devices were encrypted with ransomware, data was taken from our environment, and certain business operations have been disrupted,” the company said in a statement.

“Senior management was notified, and we implemented our incident response and business continuity protocols, took measures to contain the incident, and launched an investigation. A cybersecurity firm that has assisted other companies in similar circumstances was engaged, and law enforcement and other governmental agencies were notified,” the company said.

“We are working diligently to address the incident and to restore operations quickly and securely. As we work to complete the investigation, we will look for opportunities to enhance our existing security measures,“ the company said. “We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through this incident.” 

A day after live streams for its radio and television stations were attacked by hackers in an apparent ransomware incident, Cox Media Group properties across the country were still largely unavailable.

Cox Media owns 65 radio stations in 11 markets, 33 television stations in 20 markets, and several multi-platform streaming video and digital platforms. The TV stations, in markets like Boston; Pittsburgh; Dayton, Ohio; Seattle; and Tulsa, Oklahoma are a mixture of major network affiliates like ABC, Fox, CBS, NBC and My Network TV and independents. 

According to a report in Inside Radio, the attack began on the morning of June 3, and was apparently centered on internal networks and live streaming capabilities such as web streams and mobile apps at the Cox Media properties. Websites for the stations and most programming remained unharmed, but according to Inside Radio some live stream programming and newscasts had to be canceled. 

The attack apparently didn’t affect traditional pay TV feeds for the channels. Dish Network, which reached a carriage deal with Cox Media for about 14 channels in December, said it experienced no issues with the broadcaster. 

Cox Media representatives did not return requests for comment, but according to reports, several stations informed employees to shut down their work computers and phones on June 3.

NBC News reported that at least two stations — ABC affiliate WFTV in Orlando, Florida, and NBC affiliate WPXI in Pittsburgh — were affected, with WFTV telling workers to stay home Thursday.  Other reports claimed that Cox stations in Charlotte, North Carolina ABC affiliate WSOC-TV and Tulsa Fox affiliate KOKI-TV were affected as well. As of Friday afternoon some reports said a few of the stations were beginning to resume their online streams, but streams for Cox Media radio stations were still unavailable.

As of 6 p.m. ET Friday, online streaming for Cox Media’s Alexandria, Louisiana ABC affiliate KLAX-TV, Atlanta ABC affiliate WSB-TV, Boston Fox affiliate WFXT, Dayton, Ohio CBS affiliate WHIO-TV, Charlotte ABC affiliate WSOC-TV, Orlando ABC affiliate WFTV and Tulsa Fox affiliate KOKI-TV was either unavailable or showing partial replays of old newscasts. 

Streaming services like Hulu Live, which carry local broadcast streams, also were impacted. Hulu Live temporarily replaced WSB-TV’s broadcast feed with ABC News Live until the local feed was restored. 

According to a report in cybersecurity publication The Record, Cox Media employees were saying earlier this morning that they had shut down their systems in time and that they “should be back up and running soon.” 

The attack comes shortly after some high-profile ransomware incidents, including the May hack of the Colonial Pipeline which choked off gasoline supplies up and down the East Coast for days. Colonial  reportedly paid $4.4 million to hackers to get fuel flowing again. Earlier this month, meat producer JBS shut down nine beef plants in the U.S. after a similar ransomware attack.  

On Thursday, deputy national security adviser Anne Neuberger issued an open letter urging companies to take security precautions to protect against ransomware attacks.

Chinese telecom tech vendor Huawei has experienced another setback in its quest to become a dominant 5G equipment provider.

UK telecom BT has said that the Huawei technology won’t be used in the 5G wireless network it’s currently building. BT also said that it’s removing Huawei products from its existing 3G and 4G wireless networks.

The news, first reported by The Financial Times, comes amid a report last week that the U.S. government, wary of potential cyber-espionage perpetrated through Chinese-made electronics, has put pressure on Europe to also ban Huawei. Leading British security officials have also voiced their concerns.

For its part, BT said it’s merely keeping it’s wireless infrastructure—acquired in its 2016 purchase of EE—in line with its existing networks policy, which doesn’t include Huawei.

"We're applying these same principles to our current RFP (Request for Proposal) for 5G core infrastructure,” BT said in a statement. "As a result, Huawei have not been included in vendor selection for our 5G core. Huawei remains an important equipment provider outside the core network, and a valued innovation partner.”

BT said it is still using Huawei for “benign” applications, such as masts or telecom towers.

Responding to CNN, Huawei said it "understands and supports" BT's decision and that it will continue working with BT. "Our products and solutions serve customers in more than 170 countries and regions," the company said in a statement.

The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) and CableLabs have tapped two renowned cyber-threats experts to keynote the Cybersecurity Symposium, a full-day event set for October 13, in tandem with the Cable-Tec Expo in New Orleans.

John N. Stewart, SVP, chief security and trust officer at Cisco Systems; and Chris Roberts, founder and CTO of  One World Labs, will keynote the all-day event, which will address ways in which cable system operators can protect their networks and their customers from cyber-attacks.

Roberts made national headlines last month when he was removed from a United Airlines flight following comments he posted on Twitter claiming he knew how to hack United’s onboard systems. One World is security intelligence firm based in Denver that identifies risks before they’re exploited.

At Cisco, Stewart leads efforts to protecting the company’s public and private customer.

“As last year’s string of high-profile breaches showed, none of our businesses are immune from cyber-attacks,” Mark Dzuban, president and CEO of SCTE and its global brand, the International Society of Broadband Experts (ISBE), said in a statement. “The lessons we can learn from John N. Stewart, Chris Roberts and our symposium experts will help us to anticipate, prevent and respond to cyber threats that could jeopardize our services and our customers’ networks in the future.”

The Cybersecurity Symposium is scheduled to begin at 9:00 AM CT at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center on Oct. 13.

SCTE Cable-Tec Expo 2015 is scheduled for Oct. 13-16.
