Which is the more dominant streaming platform globally, Roku or Amazon Fire TV? Yet another research report has emerged pointing strongly to the direction of Roku.

Measuring the activity of 3 billion individual apps across 180 countries for its latest “State of the Streaming TV Industry” report purports that viewing hours within the Roku OTT ecosystem were up 173% year over year and now consume 43% of all connected device viewing.

Viewing hours for Amazon Fire TV were up 145%, Convivia said, and the platform controls 18% of connected TV use.

Overall, connected TV controls 55% of OTT device category usage, followed by mobile (23%), PC (14%) and “other” (8%).

The race between Roku and Fire TV is closely watch, as the two platforms separate themselves into becoming the dominant ecosystems. Amazon said at the end of the first quarter that it has 34 million active Fire TV users globally vs. 28 million for Roku.

But a number of independent research reports have emerged lately suggesting Roku has a strong leadership position in terms of usage.
