Tied to its Fortune 1000 focus, Comcast has secured network agreements with several other cable operators to provide connectivity outside its footprint, and that strategy is in play with the Taco Bell deal, the company confirmed.

“Comcast Business understands the unique network demands of national restaurant chains and looks forward to supporting Taco Bell, one of the technology leaders of the fast food industry,” Glenn Katz, VP & GM Enterprise Solutions at Comcast Business, said in a statement. “By understanding the ever-changing demands of this highly competitive industry and having the largest high capacity network infrastructure in the country, Comcast is in a unique position to provide and manage all aspects of a service deployment within the quick serve restaurant (QSR) sector, whether they are a smaller restaurant group or a national chain with several thousand locations.”

Comcast unveiled the trial in tandem with this week’s Interop ITX show in Las Vegas.

“Our SD-WAN solution pairs a carrier-grade, hosted SDN environment with widely available gigabit service," Kevin O’Toole, senior vice president of product management for Comcast Business, said in a statement. "Together, our SD-WAN and gigabit bandwidth solutions herald a new generation of networking that provides the bandwidth, scalability, reliability and flexibility needed to power the cloud applications that are transforming business operations."

Comcast Business said the SD-WAN beta trial will continue throughout the summer, and expects to follow with a full market launch later this year.

Comcast Business also noted that it’s rolling out Business Internet 1000, a DOCSIS 3.1-based gigabit internet service, for commercial customers.

RELATED: Comcast Gets Down to Business With DOCSIS 3.1

The SD-WAN product will help Comcast Business as it continues to go up-market and pursue larger commercial customers while putting more competitive heat on incumbent telcos.

RELATED: Comcast Business Bows New Unit Targeting Fortune 1000

Comcast’s business services unit delivered $1.5 billion in revenues in Q1, up 13.6%, with about 70% of its revenue and 60% of its growth still coming way of the small business sector.

Comcast also posted a video with O’Toole that provides more detail about the SD-WAN strategy:

Stay In Control.”

Comcast Business hasn’t announced a launch date or a full set of pricing options, but a demo and luncheon about SmartOffice in Detroit being promoted on Facebook and located by LR notes that businesses can get it starting for $140 per month, a price that includes four cameras and 30 days of cloud video storage.

The user manual for SmartOffice shows how users would access the service through a subscriber portal, with access to a Video Tab that allows customers to view multiple live video feeds on one screen, and switch between live and recorded video playback. Users can also bookmark saved video clips, and a “Vault Tab” is where stored video clips can be stored until they are manually deleted. SmartOffice will also support a mobile app.

The documentation also indicates that Comcast is developing SmartOffice in partnership with Genetec, a company that specializes in IP video surveillance technologies and systems.

The addition of a video surveillance product could help to stoke an already growing part of Comcast. Its business services unit ended 2016 approaching a $6 billion revenue run rate. Comcast Business is continues to chase after larger commercial customers, but the bulk of the unit’s revenue still comes way of small businesses.

RELATED: Comcast Business Bows New Unit Targeting Fortune 1000

(RELATED: CBS set streaming marks for Super Bowl with nearly 4 million unique viewers.)

“That’s a staggering amount of data, equal to streaming 6,000+ hours of HD video (more than 8 months worth) or almost 1.2 Million 2-megabyte images,” John Guillaume, vice president, product management at Comcast Business noted in this blog post. “A lot of that volume was generated by the free Super Bowl 50 Stadium app – which allows fans to order food, watch the Super Bowl commercials and replays, and check lines.”

Comcast is tooting its horn about that because it played a key role behind the network scenes. In 2014, it announced a ten-year deal partnership with the San Francisco 49ers and its new home that spans video and voice services, dual 10 Gbps connections, and free WiFi for the fans.

Broken down further fans used 9.3 TB of data during the game while logged on the “SB50FREE” network at the venue, while media (data gluttons that they are) gobbled up 453 gigabytes on their dedicated network. The cumulative data figures for the game were compiled from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. PT.

Comcast noted that the amount of data transferred during Super Bowl 50 outdid the previous high last year -- 6.2 TB at the University of Phoenix for Super Bowl XLIX.

Among other stats, the venue also set a Super Bowl record by registering 27,316 unique WiFi users and a peak of 20,300 concurrent users (at 5:55pm PT), toping last year’s respective 25,936 and 17,322.

WiFi usage during Super Bowl 50 peaked at 3.67 Gbps (at 3:25pm PT), passing the previous venue record of 3.55 Gbps for the NHL Stadium Series between San Jose and Los Angeles on Feb. 21, 2015.

Per Comcast, the 10 “moments” that generated the most traffic at the stadium during the game included:

-The introduction of the 50 Super Bowl MVPs

-Lady Gaga singing the National Anthem and the Blue Angels flyover

-The opening kickoff

-The first coach’s challenge

-Von Miller’s forced fumble and the first touchdown of the game by Malik Jackson

-The halftime show with Coldplay, Beyonce and Bruno Mars

-Von Miller’s second forced fumble and C.J. To meet those goals, Comcast said it has purchased a managed service company and has signed network agreements with other cable operators to further support national accounts.

Headed by former SpaceNet Inc. CEO Glenn Katz, Comcast said the new unit has already signed large customers from several industries including financial services, banking, hospitality and retail.

“We’re committed to expanding and enhancing our offerings for businesses of all sizes, and having the expertise, tools and portfolio in place to deliver customized service packages to nationwide enterprises is a key part of our growth strategy,” said Comcast Business president Bill Stemper in a statement. “Large companies need a provider who can help them manage complex networks, develop business continuity plans and integrate cloud-based applications. Our entry into this segment of the market will introduce new innovation and choice.”

Business services have been the fastest growing segment for most cable operators and Comcast is no exception. According to Comcast, business services grew 22% in 2014 and has an annual revenue run-rate of more than $4.5 billion. But so far most of the revenue has come from small and medium sized business. With the creation of Managed Enterprise Services, Comcast can tackle larger enterprises with locations outside of Comcast’s cable footprint.

According to a recent report from IDC, a Framingham, Mass.-based IT industry analyst firm, the U.S. market for managed services is expected to increase from $29 billion in 2014 to $52 billion in 2019.

"With its national network reach and end-to-end service delivery capabilities, Comcast is well positioned to serve the outsourced network management needs of large business that require increasing network capacity to serve expanding multi-site requirements," IDC research vice president Melanie Posey said in a statement.

While network agreements with cable operators like Time Warner Cable, Charter Communications, Cox Communications and Cablevision Systems will help expand Comcast’s business services reach, the cable giant also recently purchased national technology deployment and managed services firm Contingent Network Services to help larger enterprises outsource their day-to-day network operations. Comcast purchased Contingent, which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the company but will continue to operate under its own brand name, in late August.

“Contingent’s mission is to provide clients with high-quality, cost-effective network and deployment services wherever and whenever needed for reliable communications across an enterprise, and we couldn’t be more excited for them to join our team,” Katz said in a statement. “By joining forces with Comcast Business, Contingent can further expand their reach and take advantage of Comcast’s extensive fiber and hybrid fiber coax network to give enterprises the optimal network experience to meet their business and technology requirements.”

Comcast Business has reached a deal to service Golden Valley Health Centers in California's Central Valley.

The deal, financial terms of which were not disclosed, calls for the installation of Comcast Business Ethernet services at 20 clinical sites in Merced and Stanislaus counties. With broadband speeds accelerating from 1.5 Mbps to nearly 100 Mbps from Comcast Business, non-profit GVHC can rely on a stable and efficient connection, ensuring that doctors can update records in real time, access critical information and transmit data to an off-site disaster preparedness storage database daily.

With the technology amelioration, patients can expect an improved experience since much of an appointment is fully-dependent on effective broadband speeds -- from scheduling, to viewing MRIs and x-rays, to updating health records during exams. With a fast and speedy connection, providers can expedite the patient check-in process and maintain an efficient patient flow, minimizing wait times for visitors.

Comcast Business’s high-speed connection also plays a crucial role in transferring data. In order to preserve patients’ electronic health records, increased broadband is needed to transfer the hundreds of gigabytes of data collected daily from across GVHC’s 20 sites to an off-network storage facility. This process occurs nightly and must be completed before the clinics re-open in the morning.

“GVHC staff and providers situated across our Central Valley rely on high-speed connections to access and update patient information in a secure fashion in the organization's Practice Management system, as well as access Internet resources for insurance verification,” said Tony Ortiz, network administrator at Golden Valley Health Centers.

Noted Ted Girdner, vice president of Comcast Business for the California region: “Reliable and efficient solutions are critical to healthcare providers in today’s increasingly digital environment. GVHC is providing superior health care to the Central Valley, and we’re pleased to provide a solution that enhances patient and provider experiences.”

Financial terms were not announced, but the Titans have also deployed an Ethernet Private Line from Comcast at the team's practice facility.

“Being a diehard sports fan involves more than just watching your favorite team in person – it means being able to access the information you desire, when you want it, at your fingertips,” said Russ Hudson, Director, Information Systems of the Tennessee Titans, in a statement. “Our fans not only want to watch and support the team on the field, but also desire to see a close-up of that diving catch or game-saving tackle from their smartphone, and Comcast Business is playing an instrumental role in meeting these demands. The connection was easy to install and feedback from our fans couldn’t be more positive about the new Wi-Fi access.”

“Fans inside LP Field now have the luxury of reliable, high speed Wi-Fi access with unique new perspectives into the game through the Titans mobile app,” added Doug Guthrie, regional SVP, Comcast. It’s imperative that organizations like the Titans take proactive steps to ensure they have the connectivity solutions to meet their customers’ needs, today and in the future.”

The deal with the Titans follows several other deals Comcast Business has secured with pro sports franchises, including the San Francisco 49ers, Denver Broncos, Jacksonville Jaguars, Boston Celtics, Oakland A’s, Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers and Atlanta Hawks.

Comcast’s business services unit generated $1.01 billion in revenues in the third quarter of 2014, putting it on an annual run rate of more than $4 billion. Comcast is scheduled to post fourth quarter and full year 2014 results on Tuesday, Feb. 24.

Comcast sees the product addressing a range of use cases, including full-time teleworkers as well as healthcare and IT professionals and corporate executives who work from home on occasion but still require the kind of high-performing, private network connectivity that Ethernet can provide at their office locations.

Among the early adopters of Ethernet @Home is Cooper University Health Care of Camden, N.J., which is using the system to help its radiologists rapidly and securely review images and patient files from their homes via Cooper’s private network.

Comcast, citing estimates from Global Workplace Analytics, noted that about 50% of the U.S. workforce holds a job that is compatible with at least part-time work from home. Another report from the Telework Research Network sees the number of full-time teleworkers rising to nearly 5 million by 2016.

The new HFC-based Ethernet product “is really oriented to our mid-markets and enterprise customers,” Mike Tighe, executive director, data services, for Comcast Business, said, noting that the operator has been using “Ethernet everywhere” terminology to drive home the implication of the offering. “It’s about enabling Ethernet connectivity anywhere our customer needs to be…taking Ethernet where it’s never been before.”

He said Comcast has been offering an Ethernet over HFC product for about 24 months, up to symmetrical 10 Mbps, with a priority-class of service, but started to introduce the new Ethernet @Home service over the summer. The new Ethernet @Home comes in a range of service types, including Ethernet Dedicated Internet (EDI), Ethernet Private Line (EPL) and Ethernet Virtual Private Line (EVPL).

“10-Meg Ethernet is the new T-1,” Tighe said.

Word of the new offering began to emerge last month when Light Reading caught wind that the Ethernet @Home service was up for an award with the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF).

The new product is entering the mix as business services continue to represent a significant growth driver for Comcast. Its business services unit generated $1.01 billion in revenues in the third quarter of 2014, putting it on an annual run rate of more than $4 billion.

The operator’s business services unit generated $1.01 billion in revenues in the third quarter of 2014, putting it on an annual run rate of more than $4 billion.

Our investment will help businesses grow their operations, reinforcing Knoxville as a destination of choice for organizations of all sizes.”

Comcast Business said its Ethernet services are delivered over a network that now spans 140,000 miles across 39 states and Washington, D.C., and 20 of the top 25 U.S. markets.

While the bulk of Comcast Business’ revenues come from small businesses served off the MSO’s HFC plant, the operator’s Ethernet platform has been boosting its contribution as the operator continues to sign on more mid-sized commercial customers.

Last month, Vertical Systems reported that Comcast had risen two spots – from number eight to number six – on its mid-year 2014 U.S. Carrier Ethernet Leaderboard, which sets a threshold of 4% or more of billable port installations.

Overall, Comcast’s business services arm raked in $965 million in the second quarter of 2014, up from $788 million in the year-ago quarter, putting the division on pace for $3.76 billion for all of 2014.

Comcast was the big mover in Vertical Systems’ mid-year 2014 U.S. Carrier Ethernet Leaderboard, with the MSO rising two spots -- from number eight to number six -- on the list.

In the latest rankings, AT&T retained its crown among U.S. providers, followed by Verizon Communications, tw telecom, CenturyLink Communications, Time Warner Cable, Comcast, Cox Communications, Level 3 Communications and XO Communications. To make the leaderboard, Vertical Systems has set a threshold of 4% or more of billable port installations.

Companies in the firm’s U.S. Challenge Tier (1% to 4% share) for the first half of 2014 included Charter Communications, Cogent, Lightpath (Cablevision Systems), MegaPath, Windstream and Zayo.

“Now beyond the hockey stick ramp stage, the U.S. Ethernet services market has entered a very healthy growth period. During the first half of 2014, more new Ethernet customer ports were installed than during any previous corresponding period,” said Rick Malone, principal at Vertical Systems Group, in a statement.

Vertical Systems notes that a shakeout of the U.S. Leaderboard could be on the horizon amid the pending mergers of Comcast and Time Warner Cable, and Level 3 and tw telecom.

Comcast made its recent jump on the leaderboard as its Comcast Business unit continues to expand the reach of its Metro Ethernet platform and attract more commercial customers to Ethernet-class services. Comcast doesn’t break out precisely how much revenue is coming way of its Ethernet platform, but the MSO’s business unit pulled in $965 million in the second quarter of 2014, up from $788 million in the year-ago quarter, putting the division on pace for $3.76 billion for all of 2014.

A “key engine in that growth is Ethernet,” Mike Tighe, the executive director of data services for Comcast Business, wrote in this blog post. “Our growth and success with Ethernet is largely driven by the fact that too many businesses have had to rely on T1s or DSL because they had no other option,” he added.

Still, most businesses surveyed (61%) that do not currently offer WiFi plan to offer it soon, or are at least considering it.

Given those trends, it’s probably no surprise that WiFi has become a key piece of the services puzzle for Comcast and its rapidly growing business services unit.

Comcast Business currently offers customers private WiFi connectivity with secure SSIDs and, in some instances, also enables access points in business locations to broadcast SSIDs that are accessible by Comcast cable modem subscribers and consumers that get broadband from other members of the “Cable WiFi” roaming alliance (other members include Cablevision Systems, Bright House, Time Warner Cable and Cox Communications).

Small commercial customers are also asking Comcast for ways to use WiFi to help them win incremental business, as WiFi access shifts from a differentiator to a “table stakes” component, said Mike Tighe, executive director of data services for Comcast Business.

In response, Comcast Business, he said, is developing an "amenity" WiFi product for small business customers that, for example, could provide access to a company-branded SSID alongside tailored usage rules, security mechanisms, and other terms of service.

Comcast Business, he explained, hasn’t set a specific launch date for a new public-facing amenity WiFi platform, but the plan is to carve out separate bandwidth for it so it does not affect or otherwise intermingle with the data that a customer is using to conduct its day-to-day business operations.

As for terms of service, the amenity WiFi offering will offer enough smarts to set content filters and other security and control mechanism to keep the business owner protected while still providing a “robust experience” to its patrons, Tighe said.

This coming amenity offering represents another step in Comcast’s WiFi evolution. The MSO has deployed more than 1 million quasi-public access points via a mix deployments in outdoor locations, at business venues and in home-side cable modem gateways, and recently claimed that it will breach the 8 million mark by the end of the year.
