Last fall, Harmonic announced a warrant agreement with Comcast based on sales to the MSO and deployment milestones involving the CableOS product.

RELATED: Harmonic Starts Making Money on its Virtual CCAP

Raymond James analyst Simon Leopold maintained his Underperform rating on Harmonic shares following the announcement.

“Management attributed the miss to the continued transition towards software-based video encoding solutions, which could expand margin and profitability longer term, but will likely continue to impact the top line in the immediate term,” Leopold explained in a research note.

Harmonic is scheduled to release Q2 results following market close on Monday, July 31.

That latter part would be removed from the equation.

This idea probably sounds familiar. Amino’s approach with Enable shares some traits with the cloud TV of ActiveVideo, now a joint venture of Arris and Charter Communications. Charter is using ActiveVideo’s platform to help it bring its new Spectrum Guide to its base of legacy boxes as well as its new IP-capable devices.

RELATED: Arris, Charter Close $135M ActiveVideo Acquisition

Several Amino IPTV partners are already using Enable, including Cincinnati Bell and Hong Kong-based PCCW.

In the case of Cincinnati Bell, its legacy IPTV platform relied on boxes from ZTE and multiple software stacks. With Enable, Everson said, the telco was able to convert those older boxes to one based on Minerva’s platform while also supporting it on new Amino devices on a going-forward basis. By unifying that experience, Cincinnati Bell can roll new features to all its customers and not have to confine marketing programs to the legacy and next-gen customer base.

PCCW, meanwhile, had its own middleware but the underlying stack used a trio of vendors with nuances in the implementations. Enable’s virtual STB software is helping PCCW to homogenize its user experience, Everson said.

Amino is also developing new features for Enable that will allow IPTV providers to bring their service and experience to certain third-party streaming platforms. More detail will be announced later this year, but Amino views Android TV as key candidate because it is open. Amino believes Enable can be adapted to Android TV and provide a path to network-specific hardware that IPTV partners can use.

He said API tracking can give partners a new level of visibility and enable them to more rapidly pinpoint API-related issues as they emerge.

Roberts said he and his team started to validate the idea by talking to several customers of thePlatform, noting that many have become increasingly reliant on cloud-based APIs but don’t’ have the personnel set up or their own monitoring systems to keep tabs on them, thus putting a heavier reliance on their vendors to handle many of those quality assurance aspects of their online video business.

Wicket Labs, he said, has built a core system that can call into these APIs and authenticate against them, or even validate them against a test environment prior to deployment.

The Wicket Scorecard uses a web and mobile user interface (UI) and alerts partners to the status of their Wickets based on three general categories: Good Wickets (shows a vendor’s API history and performance over time, including the number of times the API has entered a problem state); Notable Wickets (explain changes to an API that is not expected to cause an immediate or meaningful impact to the user experience); and Problem Wickets (details the issue and changes impacting the consumer experience and are presented for a timely escalation to the vendor) Problems in that latter category typically include outages, 500 or 503 errors, and “brown outs,” which can be attributed, for example, to an intermittent data error or a slow response time.

Wicket Labs has not announced any individual partners, but Roberts said trials are underway and that the company’s initial group of targets includes premium video programmers, including broadcasters, cable operators or pure OTT providers.

“All of these companies have become increasingly dependent on cloud-based APIs, he said.

Starting today, Wicket Labs is offering free “friendly” summary account for up to three wickets before moving to a “Club” tier for five Wickets that costs $500 per month. A higher-end “League” tier is more variable in terms of the number of monitored Wickets are made available to the client.

Wicket Labs is currently privately funded, but could look to raise a formal “A” investment round next spring, Roberts said.

Other co-founders include VP of products Eric Knutson, formerly of RealNetworks and Rhapsody; and VP of software development Larry Hitchon, an exec who is late of Amazon, Front Desk, AppFog, and The Top Agent Network.

Cisco added that 1 Mainstream’s technology complements its “Infinite” cloud video suite/platform.

Cisco expects to close the deal in Q2 of its current fiscal year, noting that 1 Mainstream will join Cisco’s Service Provider Video Software and Solutions Cloud Engineering Group, now led by Conrad Clemson, the unit’s senior vice president and general manager.

“OTT is fast becoming the new normal, where open, cloud-based technologies allow innovation at a rate simply not possible with traditional TV technologies,” Rob Salvagno, vice president of coporate business development at Cisco, said in a blog post about the deal.

Cupertino, Calif.-based 1 Mainstream was founded in 2012 by several former execs from Roku, Apple and TiVo, with the goal of providing a platform that enables partners to rapidly spool up video services for a wide range of supported streaming platforms, including smartphones, tablets, gaming consoles, connected TVs and media players such as the Apple TV and Android TV-powered Nexus Player.

1 Mainstream’s financial backers include DCM, Menlo Ventures, BSkyB and Luminari Capital. In March, Sky invested an additional $5 million in 1 Mainstream, following a $2 million investment made in 2013. Known 1 Mainstream customers include Sky News, Tastemade, Young Hollywood, Foxtel Play, NowTV (Sky), ACC Digital Network, Screambox, Acacia TV, and Universal Sports Network (which is shutting down).

“1 Mainstream’s rapid growth shows the huge opportunity for technology that helps premium content owners reach audiences across multiple platforms and devices, quickly and efficiently,” Alun Webber, managing director, product design and development at Sky, said in a statement. “As a major customer, we are pleased to have been so closely involved in their development and we look forward to continue working with them as they become part of our long-standing partner Cisco’s Service Provider Video Team."

There, he said, customers who call in about Contour, Cox’s current-generation video platform for set-tops and tablets, are also being offered to opportunity to get the X1-based service, which Cox is currently referring to as Contour 2.

“We’re not marketing individual features heavily, but focused on testing standard Contour functionality on the X1 platform in a live customer environment,” he said, noting that Cox’s future plans involving X1 are still to be determined though its trial continues to show encouraging results.

Cox EVP Mark Greatrex told CableFAX in its September 15 issue about the San Diego trial and the MSO’s use of the Contour 2 label.

Cox was the first operator outside of Comcast to confirm that was evaluating X1, which Comcast now offers across its national cable footprint and is shipping about 30,000 X1 boxes per day.

But Cox isn’t alone. Shaw Communications of Canada announced in June that it was shutting down its original plan to develop an IPTV service to instead try out X1.

Those trials also add momentum to the Reference Design Kit (RDK), a preintegrated software stack for IP and IP/QAM hybrid devices that’s being managed by Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Liberty Global. Comcast's X1 platform uses the RDK.

Cox developed its original Contour platform, which features a six-tuner whole-home DVR and a personalized video recommendation platform from ThinkAnalytics (up to eight individual profiles), in tandem with NDS, which is now part of Cisco Systems.

ActiveVideo will operate independently of Arris and Charter, with Arris serving as the sales channel for ActiveVideo's CloudTV platform outside of sales to Charter, which is using the technology to underpin its new cloud-based Spectrum Guide for set-tops that use IP as well as MPEG-based transport.

Update: Charter has been testing Spectrum Guide in Fort Worth, Texas. The MSO expects to introduce it in other markets, including Reno, Nev.; and St. Louis, “in the coming months,” Tom Rutledge, Charter’s president and CEO, said Friday (May 1) on the company’s first quarter earnings call. “Results in the test market have been positive,” Rutledge said, noting that Charter is also working to boost the number of on-demand titles it offers on set-tops and the Charter TV app by a factor of three.

Rutledge also noted that devices outfitted with the cloud-based Spectrum Guide will also be paired with a “small resident guide” to ensure that customers can still access a user interface “if the boxes ever lose connectivity to the server.” He also said Charter is also expecting to will expand into several markets the rollout of its hybrid QAM/IP “Worldbox” (Humax and Cisco Systems are the initial suppliers of it) that supports Charter’s new downloadable security platform.

Jeff Miller will continue to lead ActiveVideo as CEO. The ActiveVideo board is comprised of both Arris and Charter execs. The deal was announced on April 14.

In addition to Charter, ActiveVideo customers include Cablevision Systems, Liberty Global, Deutsche Telekom, Time Warner Cable, J:COM, Philips, and Roku, among others.

“We expect to be able to scale [ActiveVideo’s] business and take the technology and deploy it more ubiquitously around the world,” Bruce McClelland, president of Arris’s network and cloud and global services division, said in a recent interview about the deal.

A Q&A with Gary Lauder, the managing director of Lauder Partners and former chairman of ActiveVideo, will be featured in the May 4 issue of Multichannel News.
