CBS premieres 13 Days in Ferguson, a special about the aftermath of a police shooting of a young Black man in 2014, on Friday, August 9. The special features Cedric the Entertainer, who grew up next to Ferguson, reuniting with his longtime friend and retired lead task force officer, Capt. Ron Johnson, for what CBS calls “an emotional journey, walking the streets of Ferguson in remembrance of the shocking events that took place there a decade ago.”

“The story of Ferguson is the story of America,” Cedric said. “It’s important to tell this story now with my friend Ron Johnson because, with the benefit of 10 years, we can see the lessons learned, the progress made and the road ahead with more clarity. This is Ron’s elegy.”

Unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown Jr. was shot and killed by police officer Darren Wilson following a confrontation in Ferguson on August 9, 2014. Protests and rioting followed. Assigned to lead law-enforcement efforts to defuse the violence was Johnson, a Black Missouri State Highway Patrol officer. 

The special includes the first-ever sit-down discussion between Johnson and the victim’s father, Michael Brown Sr.

“If I was going to step up to be a leader, then I had to accept whatever came, the good and the bad,” Johnson said. “Leadership is an honor. People are critical of leadership and a leader has to take whatever comes with that, because he or she has been honored to be in that position. And so, whatever came with it, it was a part of it.”

13 Days in Ferguson is a production by See It Now Studios and Bungalow Media + Entertainment in association with A Bird and a Bear Entertainment. Executive producers are Robert Friedman and Deborah Riley Draper for Bungalow Media + Entertainment, Cedric the Entertainer and Eric C. Rhone for A Bird and a Bear Entertainment, JD DeWitt for Fear Not Productions and Susan Zirinsky and Terence Wrong for See It Now Studios. Riley Draper is the director.

The special streams live on Paramount Plus.

CBS airs The Super Bowl Soulful Celebration 25th Anniversary Saturday, February 10. Cedric the Entertainer and Tichina Arnold, stars of CBS comedy The Neighborhood, will host. Paramount Plus streams the one-hour special as well. 

Formerly known as The Super Bowl Gospel Celebration, the event tapes Wednesday, February 7 at the Pearl Theater at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. Performers have not been announced.

The event brings together NFL stars and acclaimed musicians from a variety of genres. Performers at last year’s event included Patti LaBelle and Israel Houghton.

CBS airs Super Bowl LVIII on February 11. 

The A+E Networks will team with a bevy of top celebrities including Kevin Costner, Morgan Freeman, Janet Jackson and Anthony Anderson for major television projects, the company announced Wednesday during its upfront presentation.

History Channel will partner with Costner on a new eight-episode series The West, which will capture the diverse, complex character and untold stories that defined the “Wild West” and that continue to shape our country today, according to the network.

Freeman will helm the upcoming documentary Black Patriots: The 761st Battalion, which will tell the true story of the 761st Tank Battalion, the first Black tank unit to serve in combat during WWII. Bradley Cooper will executive produce FDR, a three-night documentary debuting on Memorial Day that will provide a portrait of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The network is also developing projects with Dan Aykroyd and Michael Imperioli.

Lifetime will again partner with Janet Jackson on a new documentary airing on both Lifetime and A&E that focus on her new concert tour and reunion with the Jacksons, said the network. Also simulcasting on both networks is TLC Forever, a documentary celebrating one of the top-selling female groups of all time. 

A&E will follow actors Anderson and Cedric the Entertainer on a new 10-episode documentary series, Kings of BBQ, in which the two actors will work together to build their own barbeque product empire.

"Our goal within this media evolution is to meet audiences wherever and however  they consumer content, by working with great worldwide storytellers to develop and execute their vision," A+E Networks Group President and Chairman Paul Buccieri said in a statement. "Over the last four years, we have been on a journey to expand our production capabilities in both scripted and factual, and we've established key relationships in the talent management space as well as continued creating compelling content across our brands to further meet the needs of our valued partners and viewers." ■ 

Bounce will debut its new original scripted drama series Johnson on Aug. 1, the broadcast network said Tuesday.

The series, executive produced by Cedric The Entertainer and Eric Rhone, centers on four life-long best friends in Atlanta, all of whom share the same Johnson last name. The series revolves around what happens when the four guys find themselves in vastly different places in their lives and it begins to threaten their bond, said Bounce.

Johnson stars Deji Laray, Thomas Jones, Phillip Smithey and Derrex Brady.

Actor Cedric the Entertainer will host CBS' Sept. 19 live Primetime Emmy Awards telecast, which will be held in front of a limited audience, according to the Television Academy.

The event marks the first time Cedric the Entertainer — who stars in the CBS comedy The Neighborhood — will host the event, which will also stream live on Paramount Plus. CBS' live telecast will feature a limited audience of nominees and their guests, according to the network.

Reginald Hudlin and Ian Steward will serve as executive producers of the 73rd annual Emmy Awards, which will take place at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles. 

TV Land's The Soul Man, starring Cedric "The Entertainer" and wife Niecy Nash, has named Bill Martin and Mike Schiff showrunners, the network announced today. 

Set to premiere in 2015, comedian Sherri Shepherd will also return to the sitcom for 10 of the 12 episodes. 

Executive producers include Cedric and Suzanne Martin, as well as Eric C. Rhone, Sean Hayes and Todd Milliner of Hazy Mills Productions.

The show centers around Reverend Boyce “The Voice” Ballentine (Cedric) and his wife Lolli as the once R&B singer takes on his new St. Louis life.
