Country drama Monarch will not see a second season on Fox. Susan Sarandon and Trace Adkins played the husband and wife duo behind an influential country music family. The show was to debut out of the NFC Championship game in January, but was pushed to a fall premiere due to COVID complications.

Fox called the show "a Texas-sized, multigenerational musical drama about America's first family of country music."

Monarch debuted September 11. Adkins told B+C about his Albie character: "Albie is the patriarch of this very successful country music family that's somewhat of a dynasty — at least they think that's what it is. He's herding cats — that's his job. He tries to keep a lid on some of the drama. He keeps the family together while at the same time he tries to enjoy life and play a little music here and there."

Monarch is Fox's first wholly owned scripted series fully produced in-house.

Melissa London Hilfers created the show, and is an executive producer alongside Michael Rauch, who is showrunner, Gail Berman and Hend Baghdady of The Jackal Group and Jason Owen of Sandbox Entertainment. ■

HBO on Friday pulled the plug on its Emmy-winning drama series Westworld after four seasons.

The series ended its fourth season this past August and was arguably one of the network’s highest-profile shows. During its run the show was nominated for 54 Emmy Awards, winning four statuettes, including a 2018 Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series nod for Thandiwe Newton.

Westworld’s ensemble cast featured such stars as Evan Rachel Wood, Ed Harris, Jeffrey Wright, Tessa Thompson, Luke Hemsworth and Anthony Hopkins.

The series was created by Johnathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, who also served as executive producers along with J.J. Abrams, Alison Schapker, Athena Wickham, Richard J. Lewis, Denise Thé and Ben Stephenson.

In a statement, HBO said: “Over the past four seasons, Lisa and Jonah have taken viewers on a mind-bending odyssey, raising the bar at every step. Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist will not get to season three on NBC. Jane Levy plays Zoey in the musical comedy/drama. Skylar Astin, Alex Newell, John Clarence Stewart and Andrew Leeds are also in the cast. 

Austin Winsberg writes and executive produces Zoey, and the other executive producers are Kim Tannenbaum, Eric Tannenbaum, Paul Feig, David Blackman, Daniel Inkeles and Sam Laybourne. 

Season two looked into “the feelings we keep buried on the inside, the human impulse for connection and the undeniable healing power of music and dance,” in NBC’s words. After a tragedy, Zoey began to navigate her new normal and found herself in a new dynamic at work and in her love life. Her musical powers both complicate and inform her view of the world.

Lionsgate and Universal Television produce the show, in association with the Tannenbaum Company, Feigco Entertainment Universal Music Group’s Polygram Entertainment and Zihuatenejo Productions.
