TMZ examines the marital woes of Britney Spears when TMZ Investigates: Britney Spears: Divorce & Despair airs on Fox Thursday, August 24. The special goes for 60 minutes.

Sam Asghari, who is 29, filed for divorce from the pop star August 16. They’ve been married for 14 months. He cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split.

TMZ teases that the divorce “may get ugly.”

“The split has been looming and Britney’s rumored infidelity was the final straw for Sam,” it said. “Her family estrangement continues, with no meaningful support and an uncertain future finding the superstar utterly alone. The question is – did the ‘Free Britney’ movement do her any favors by getting her out of the conservatorship?”

Spears is 41. The conservatorship that oversaw her personal and professional affairs was terminated in 2021.

FX and the New York Times investigated the Spears conservatorship in a 2021 special.

The TMZ special is executive produced by Harvey Levin, Don Nash, Charles Latibeaudiere, Ryan Regan and Jess Fusco.

TCA17: Lifetime Greenlights Michael Jackson Original Movie

Lifetime will create an original film based on the life of Michael Jackson as part of a lineup of high profile original movie projects set to debut in 2017.

Currently in production, Michael Jackson: Searching For Neverland – based on the best selling book Remember The Time: Protecting Michael Jackson In His Final Days -- will be executively produced by Suzanne de Passe (The Jacksons: An American Dream), Madison Jones and Robert Teitel (Barbershop franchise, Notorious). Silver Screen and Dianne Houston will direct a script written by Elizabeth Hunter (Beauty Shop).

Other original movie projects include Viola Davis starrer Custody, set to premiere March 4. The movie stars Davis as one of three women brought together over a custody case revolving around a mother suspected of injuring her son. Hayden Panettiere, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Ellen Burstyn and Tony Shalhoub also star in the film.

Actor James Franco will executively produce and star in a new romantic thriller, High School Lover, set to debut Feb. 4. Also in February the network will debut its previously announced original film Britney Ever After.

On the scripted front, the network’s Mary Kills People will debut April 23 and stars Caroline Dhavernas as a doctor who helps people in need end their lives with dignity. Lifetime will also produce a psychological thriller You, based on Caroline Kepnes’ best selling novel of the same name.

Lifetime will explore the life of pop star Britney Spears in a new docu-movie set to debut in 2017, the network announced Wednesday.

The tentatively titled Britney, the movie will detail Spears’ rise to fame, fall from grace and eventual triumphant resurrection, said network executives. Lifetime will begin production next month in Vancouver for a 2017 premiere on Lifetime.

Asylum Entertainment will produce Britney, with Steve Michaels, Jonathan Koch and Joan Harrison serving as executive producers, said the network.
