Launched nationally in July as a kind of hybrid free-ad-supported and subscription streaming platform, Comcast/NBCUniversal’s Peacock appears to be safely aloft.

But not all the big original shows that it debuted with it over the summer have been successful.

Also read: Peacock Reaches 22 Million Sign-ups

Case in point: Deadline Hollywood reports that Peacock will not bring original series Brave New World back for a second season.

“There will not be Season 2 of Brave New World on Peacock,” Peacock said in a statement provided to Deadline. “David Wiener created a thought-provoking and cinematic adaptation. We’re grateful to the cast and crew who brought this world to life. We look forward to telling more stories with David in the future.”

An adaptation of Aldous Huxley’s classic dystopian novel is produced by studio UCP, which will reportedly shop the series around for alternative distribution.

It’s not only Peacock’s first major cancellation, it’s the first big one ssince Susan Rovner joined NBCUniversal earlier this month as chairman of entertainment content, overseeing programming for television and streaming.

NBCU and UCP’s production partner on the show, Amblin Entertainment, first agreed to adapt the show back in 2015, before Peacock was even conceived.

Brave New World, the drama from NBCUniversal’s streaming service Peacock, spins a tale from a classic book into a new version of humanity’s future.

Peacock‘s ‘Brave New World’

The series is based on Aldous Huxley’s 1932 novel and explores a dystopian future in which everything and everyone is seemingly perfect. The recipe for this new utopia is outlined in the very first scene, which describes the fictional New London as a place where only three rules are in effect: No privacy, no monogamy and no family. With nothing to restrict their free lifestyles — and with plentiful and TV-MA-rated orgies to attend — the citizens of New London are seemingly in a state of harmony at all times.

Anyone in New London experiencing the slightest bit of angst is quickly given Soma pills, created to satiate their mood and return to a state of tranquility.

But not everyone is satisfied. Scientist Lenina Crowne (Jessica Brown Findlay) wants a monogamous relationship, but her secret is discovered by Bernard Marx (Harry Lloyd), part of the Alpha Plus elites who are in charge of New London. Bernard, though, also questions his identity and fate within the system and eventually befriends Lenina in a search for something more.

Their quest takes them to the outskirts of town, to a theme park dubbed the Savage Lands, which represents what life was like when monogamy, greed and other “sins” dominated society. The lands are populated by “savages” — outsiders unwilling to give up their freedoms. The savages eventually stage an uprising against the park owners and visitors, forcing Bernard and Lenina to flee or be killed. The two are saved by John the Savage (Alden Ehrenreich), and the group eventually returns. But soon John’s unwillingness to conform to the New World, and Bernard and Lenina’s continued questioning of the status quo, threaten to destroy New London’s way of life.

Peacock hopes the fun, entertaining nine-episode series will anchor its lineup of original and acquired content and draw subscribers into its tent.

The Nest begins on Acorn TV July 13. The BBC One psychological thriller is about a pact between a wealthy young couple and a teenage girl. The couple has everything except a baby. They meet 18-year-old Kaya, from the other side of Glasgow, and hire her to be their surrogate. Kaya may not be all she’s cracked up to be.

'The Nest'

Nicole Taylor, creator and co-executive producer, called it a “domestic thriller, an emotional thriller — very pacey, very twisty. It’s about something that’s emotionally real.”

The Nest is just five episodes, and Taylor likes it that way. “I believe in burning through story,” she said.

The idea for the series came to her at a performance by country star Brandy Clark. Taylor is obsessed with country music and often gets ideas at concerts. She’s been into country since she was a child. “It was extremely unfashionable to be into Garth Brooks,” Taylor said of her tween/teen years.

Taylor boiled The Nest down to “how far will you go to get what you want?” She added, “Three people lock into a relationship with mutually assured destruction.”

The Nest did well on BBC One. Taylor said fans were all different ages. “I love it when that happens,” she said. “You hit a whole bunch of demographics, and everyone takes away something different.”

'Brave New World'

July 15 sees the premiere of Brave New World on Peacock. It is, of course, adapted from Aldous Huxley’s dystopian novel from 1932. Executive producer David Weiner said the ideas Huxley puts forth — about technology, society and class — are timely in 2020. “The ideas in Brave New World seem to be more resonant, more relevant 90 years after he wrote it,” Weiner said.

Alden Ehrenreich, Jessica Brown Findlay and Demi Moore are in the cast.

Peacock mentions a “genetically-engineered future where life is pain-free but meaningless.” Society prohibits monogamy, privacy, money, family and history. Like many of us, Weiner had to read Brave New World for school, and didn’t quite finish the assignment. “It had sex in it,” he recalled, but conceded that Huxley’s grand themes went beyond his ken. Reconnecting with it more recently, Weiner mentioned “an extraordinarily prophetic novel.”

Huxley was perhaps most prescient in envisioning the tech world that lay ahead. “He’d be unpleasantly unsurprised by our use of technology,” Weiner said.

Brave New World is set in both sterile London and the gritty Savage Lands beyond. Weiner described the series as “deliciously weird.”

Peacock launches July 15. Weiner said he heard nothing but yes from the network in producing Brave New World.

RELATED: Programming Review: ‘Brave New World’

Peacock’s mix of established programs and premium original stuff, he said, should find viewers. “I’m as curious as anybody about Peacock,” Weiner added.
