Amazon Prime Video has ordered a Bosch spinoff with the working title Untitled Renée Ballard, which is based on the work of author Michael Connelly. Connelly will executive produce the show, about the LAPD’s cold case division, under his Hieronymus Pictures banner, alongside Fabel Entertainment.

Prime Video’s Renée Ballard series has been in the works for some time.

The order is for 10 episodes and the show will stream on Prime Video. Michael Alaimo and Kendall Sherwood will be the showrunners, and will executive produce with Connelly.

The series will follow Detective Renée Ballard, a character who has not been in the prior Bosch series, who is tasked with running the LAPD’s new cold case division — a poorly funded, all-volunteer unit with a massive caseload. “Ballard approaches these frozen-in-time cases with empathy and determination,” Prime Video said. “When she uncovers a larger conspiracy during her investigations, she’ll lean on the assistance of her retired ally, Harry Bosch, to navigate the dangers that threaten both her unit and her life.”

LAPD Det. Harry Bosch was the central character in Bosch, which went for seven seasons on Prime Video. Titus Welliver portrayed Bosch. Spinoff Bosch: Legacy debuted on Amazon Freevee last year, and season two premiered last month.

Author Connelly has written several novels about Bosch.

“From books to screen, Michael Connelly creates authentic and suspenseful stories, led by distinctive characters who make audiences care and connect,” said Lauren Anderson, head of AVOD originals, unscripted, and targeted programming at Amazon MGM Studios. “Renée Ballard is one of those characters. She instantly captivated readers with hints of a troubled past and a protective layer of idiosyncrasies she developed to survive. We look forward to expanding the Bosch universe with Michael and introducing viewers to Ballard’s personal approach to pursuing justice.”

Besides Connelly, Alaimo and Sherwood, Henrik Bastin and Melissa Aouate will executive produce for Fabel Entertainment.

“It is so exciting to bring Renée Ballard to the screen and to do it with Prime Video, my streaming partners for going on 10 years. This show will have the same authenticity and propulsive momentum of Bosch: Legacy. Fans of the books will love it,” said Connelly.

After rebooting its long-running Amazon Prime Video crime drama Bosch as Bosch: Legacy on AVOD platform Freevee last year, Amazon announced that it's expanding the Bosch franchise with two spin-off series.

One will feature actor Jamie Hector, reprising his role as Haitian-born Detective Jerry Edgar, working an undercover assignment for the FBI in the "Little Haiti" area of Miami. "J. Edgar," as he was known, was the loyal LAPD partner to titular character Det. Harry Bosch (Titus Welliver) on seven seasons of the original Bosch that ran on Prime Video from 2014 - 2021.

Meanwhile, another spinoff will be built around a character that will be introduced in Freevee's upcoming second season of Bosch: Legacy -- LAPD Det. Renee Ballard, a female crimefighter mentored by Bosch, who himself has left the department and now fights crime as a private investigator.

The log lines and cast/producer summaries for the two new shows are pasted below.

It's unclear what Amazon streaming platform each will ultimately drop on.

The whole "Bosch Universe" was created by novelist Michael Connelly.

Untitled J. It’s a big number for the film considering that it debuted on Amazon Prime Video on July 2, giving the movie just three days to be tracked by Nielsen.

A time traveling alien invasion thriller also starring J.K. The final season will be based on Connelly’s 2014 book The Burning Room. And according to Amazon, it will put Detective Harry Bosch’s motto, “Everybody counts or nobody counts," on “center stage.”

Happily for fans of the gritty crime drama, star Titus Welliver will take his title charter to an all-new series on Amazon Prime Video’s AVOD sibling, IMDb TV, starting later this year. That show will feature Bosch, having left the LAPD, plying his unique set of skills for super lawyer Honey “Money” Chandler.

Besides Welliver, Mimi Rodgers will reprise her role as Chandler, and Madison Lintz will keep playing Bosch’s daughter, Maddie. (So help me if you lay one hand on her, they'll be scraping you off the cement with gardening tools.)

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves — both Rodgers and Lintz will be back for Bosch season seven, too, as will Any Aquino (Lt. Grace Billets and her under-appreciated deft managerial grace), Jamie Hector (Bosch’s loyal and capable partner, Detective Jerry Edgar) and Lance Reddick (the stern, impossibly erect-postured Chief Irvin Irving).

Bosch is produced by Fabrik Entertainment, a Red Arrow Studios company and was developed for television by Eric Overmyer. The series is executive produced by TWelliver, Elle Johnson, Pieter Jan Brugge, Henrik Bastin, Connelly and Eric Overmyer.

With seven years, seven seasons and 68 episodes in the can, the seminal Amazon Prime Video original series Bosch will wind down this summer.

Hardboiled titular character Harry Bosch will end his highly productive, albeit somewhat polarizing, run as an LAPD Hollywood Division homicide detective, moving on to become a Mr. Gadget for power attorney Honey Chandler. This isn’t a spoiler. We already know that star Titus Welliver and his character—inspired by the novels of Michael Connelly, living by his own rules, and answering only to the call of justice from high atop Laurel Canyon in his swanky, panoramically situated, smooth-jazzimbued bachelor pad — is being spun off into an as-yet-untitled spinoff on Amazon’s ad-supported IMDb TV platform.

Bosch bolting the LAPD was in the announcement. As Amazon gets set to upload the final eight episodes of Bosch on June 25, what we don’t know is what happens to Bosch’s longtime loyal partner, the stylishly able Jerry Edgar, played by actor Jamie Hector. When we last saw J. Edgar, as he’s most often called in the cubicles of the soon-to-shutter Hollywood Division, he was uncharacteristically taking justice into his own hands, offing Haitian drug kingpin Jacques Avril (Treva Etienne) in a shoot that internal affairs would definitely deem less than “good,” had Detective Edgar not — also uncharacteristically — lied about the details.

We caught up with Hector to ask him what the heck is going on with the usually so steady J. Edgar. And what’s he gonna do now?

Bonus Five

What shows are you binge-watching right now? Bosch, Queen of the South, Godfather of Harlem

Where did you ride out the pandemic? L.A.? Back in New York? In New York and in L.A. when working on Bosch.

How do L.A. cops like J. Edgar eat at so many delicious-looking taco stands and burrito places and stay in such great shape? It’s called jogging, LOL — and small portions.

What technology that you use every do you like the best (hardware or software)? My Echo.

What’s the last book you read? We Own This City by Justin Fenton.

It was definitely a shock the way Detective Edgar took down Avril at the end of Season 6. What got into him?

What got into Jerry was the need for justice. Avril was about to commit another murder, and he had the protection of the government to do it. It was also personal — he killed Jerry’s uncle. It was that deep pain in Jerry’s gut that the world was going to lose with Avril in it because of the atrocities he committed in Haiti, the murders in the U.S. and the murders he would commit in the future, still under the protection of the government.

Your character on "Bosch" is definitely guided by a basic sense of humanity, which is very different from the more pathological Marlo Stanfield (of "The Wire"), a role you’re also really well-known for. Can you describe the key differences in approach?

The key difference in my approach was the sum total of their lives at the point in which we met them. Not just the moments before or the day before—it was their lifetime before that led up to the moment their stories began. They were created by their environments: Marlo saw his mother sleeping with a different man every night, and he slept on the floor. Jerry slept in his own bed, and he had the protection of his family who sang “Happy Birthday” to him and made sure he had everything he needed. Marlo’s life was built on lack and survival—he’s going to get what he needs by any means necessary—if that means respect, money, whatever he needs at that time, so be it. Jerry’s was built on access, protection and service.

How influenced is your performance by the Michael Connelly books? Obviously, those novels must impact the character development to an extent. But there seems to be a lot of you in J. Edgar.

In season 1, I read the books that the season was based on, and I felt as if I was playing the role with the knowledge of what was going to happen next. In life, it doesn’t work like that, so after season 1, I stopped reading the books beforehand, especially since the scripts were not written exactly like the books. When that would happen, it would throw me off when what the book and scripts said were different. It would be funny sometimes—for example, I am a runner, so when we would do a scene where a little running got Jerry winded, now that was difficult for me.

How challenging was shooting Season 7 of "Bosch" in the middle of a pandemic?

It was very challenging because pre-pandemic, the set of Bosch was a very comfortable, friendly set, where everyone was close, from the actors to the crew to the producers. Everyone spoke every day, and we ate together. So after six seasons of this comfort, when COVID-19 hit and we had to distance ourselves, that was challenging.

Any chance Jerry Edgar collides with Harry Bosch working a case for Honey Chandler in the IMDb TV spinoff?

You never know. I am excited to know that the work we did together was able to lead to a spinoff, and I’m happy about that whether I make an appearance in it or not.

Amazon has announced a premiere date for the seventh and final season of its longest running original series, cop drama Bosch.

The series, based on Michael Connelly’s best-selling novel series about an effective LAPD homicide detective who plays by his own rules, will resume its last 10-episode campaign on Amazon Prime Video starting June 25.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves—both Rodgers and Lintz will be back for Bosch season seven, too, as will Any Aquino (Lt.

Tough-guy detective Harry Bosch is going AVOD.

As the seventh and final season of the Amazon Studios-produced Bosch gets ready to unfurl on subscription service Amazon Prime Video later this spring, Amazon announced Wednesday that a spinoff series, recasting star Titus Welliver as Harry Bosch, will stream on the ad-supported, free-to-consumer IMDb TV service this summer. No word yet on a show title or episode count.

The spinoff will feature Bosch embarking on a “new chapter” in his career, working for a one-time sworn enemy, attorney Honey “Money” Chandler (actor Mimi Rogers).

Madison Lintz also reprises her role as Maddie Bosch.

“To say I am ecstatic is an understatement!,” said Welliver, who also serves as executive producer, in a statement that included numerous exclamation points. “To be given the opportunity to tell more Harry Bosch stories is a tremendous gift. The process of shooting season 7 with the shadow of it being our final loomed heavily, so when the idea was presented to continue with the possibility of a spinoff, without hesitation I said, ‘let’s go.’ To all of our Bosch fans, thank for your incredible support for all these years and I can promise you the ride will only get better!”

Amazon has queued up a number of significant original-series announcements for IMDb TV, including a new court show built around syndication star “Judge” Judy Sheindlin, as well as a currently available six-part documentary focused on the Sierra Canyon High School basketball team, which features LeBron James’s son Bronny, along with the offspring of other current and former NBA players.

The Emmy-winning Bosch, however, has been one of the bigger original titles for the flagship Amazon Prime Video subscription platform for several years.

Produced by Fabel Entertainment, the Bosch spinoff for IMDb TV is executive produced by Michael Connelly, Eric Overmyer, Tom Bernardo, Henrik Bastin, Pieter Jan Brugge, Welliver and Zetna Fuentes. Fuentes will also direct the spinoff pilot.

“IMDb TV is the perfect home to extend the longstanding Amazon Studios relationship with the immensely talented Michael Connelly, Eric Overmyer, Tom Bernardo, Henrik Bastin, Pieter Jan Brugge, Titus Welliver, Mimi Rogers and Madison Lintz,” said Lauren Anderson and Ryan Pirozzi, co-heads of content and programming for IMDb TV. “Bosch has entertained fans season after season through vibrant storytelling and distinctive characters, and we are thrilled to evolve Bosch and ‘Money’ Chandler’s adventures through a new, ambitious IMDb TV Original and the first series spinoff for Amazon Studios.”

Amazon Studios has picked up a seventh and final season for cop drama Bosch, starring Titus Welliver. Season six runs later on this year. The show was adapted from Michael Connelly’s Bosch novels.

Produced by Fabrik Entertainment, Bosch was developed for television by Eric Overmyer and is executive produced by Overmyer, Welliver, Pieter Jan Brugge, Connelly, Henrik Bastin, Daniel Pyne, James Baker and Bo Stehmeier.

“Bosch was one of our first Amazon originals, and it helped define us as a home for smartly written, captivating series,” said Albert Cheng, COO and co-head of television, Amazon Studios. “It has been a pleasure to work with Eric, Henrik, Michael, Pieter Jan, Dan, Titus and the entire Bosch team. We’re delighted that we get to spend another season with Harry Bosch and conclude this wonderful television series for our Prime Video customers.”

Season seven will draw from the novels The Concrete Blonde and The Burning Room. Harry Bosch and Jerry Edgar pursue two separate but perilous murder investigations that will take them to the highest levels of white-collar crime and the lowest depths of the street-level drug trade.

“I’m proud of what we have accomplished with Bosch and look forward to completing the story in season seven,” Connelly said. “It’s bittersweet but all good things come to an end and I am happy that we will be able to go out the way we want to. This started seven years ago with showrunner Eric Overmyer and me writing the pilot. We plan to write the last episode together as well. We’ll leave behind the longest running show so far on Amazon and it will be there to be discovered by new viewers for as long as people are streaming. That is amazing to me.

Connelly added that Welliver “will be Harry Bosch for the ages.”

Bosch was a Dutch painter who specialized in surreal depictions of good battling evil; his best known work is “The Garden of Earthly Delights.” The talent behind Disney Channel show The Owl House, which premieres Friday, Jan. 10, cites Bosch as a key influence in the animated program’s look and feel.

A mix of fantasy and comedy, The Owl House follows teen girl Luz, who stumbles upon a magical realm and befriends a rebellious witch, Eda, and a tiny warrior named King. Luz serves as Eda’s apprentice.

Creator Dana Terrace mentioned the works of Bosch, along with artists John Bauer, Charles Leickert and Remedios Varo, as influences. “I started doodling demons and witches and created the characters out of those little ideas,” she said.

Disney Channel has committed to a second season of the series.

Hieronymus Bosch died in 1516. His popularity seems to pick up at times when people are uneasy, according to Joseph Koerner, Victor S. Thomas Professor of the History of Art and Architecture at Harvard University. Perhaps there’s a world war going on, or the nation is divided along political fault lines. He describes Bosch’s work as “evil, dystopic landscapes populated by creatures.”

The creatures often face off with a Christian saint. “There’s hostility, a lurking evil in his work,” Koerner said. “It’s a world in a state of siege, a state of emergency.”

Fittingly enough for The Owl House, Bosch often painted an owl somewhere in the frame of his works.

Cop drama Bosch premiered on Amazon Prime in 2014, and season six is in the works. The main character is LAPD detective Hieronymus Bosch, known to colleagues as Harry. The series is an adaptation of Michael Connelly’s novels about Hieronymus Bosch, including The Black Echo and Two Kinds of Truth. This Bosch is the son of a prostitute who conceived him after an affair with a married man. To protect her son’s identity, she named him Hieronymus Bosch. A poster of “The Garden of Earthly Delights” hanging in her apartment surely influenced the naming of her son.

Connelly, an exec producer on the Amazon series, has authored 20-plus Bosch novels.

“Bosch painted a world gone wrong, and detectives work in a world gone wrong,” said Dan Pyne, executive producer and a co-showrunner for Bosch. “L.A. is a lot like The Garden of Earthly Delights.”

Bosch isn’t much of a fan of the painter, according to Pyne. In season three, Bosch was being framed for a murder, and the perpetrator left a plastic owl at the crime scene to steer law enforcement to Detective Bosch.

Alex Hirsch, creator of Gravity Falls, provides the voice of diminutive warrior King in The Owl House and is a consultant on the series. “Things that are old are new again, and Dana is taking that to the extreme of going back to Hieronymus Bosch and illuminated manuscripts,” he said. “It’s an ancient, bizarre, medieval world that’s been reinterpreted through a modern lens. That creates a really funny and interesting tension.”
