Showtime has made the season four premiere of The Chi and series premiere of Flatbush Misdemeanors available for free on streaming platforms and on demand. Both are on TV Sunday, May 23, as is the season three starter for comedy Black Monday. The Black Monday season premiere will be available for free May 23. 

The free episodes are on YouTube, Showtime.com and Sho.com, and on multiple partner platforms. 

Lena Waithe created The Chi and executive produces the drama with Common. It’s a coming-of-age story centering on a group of residents on the South Side of Chicago who become linked by coincidence.

Comedy Flatbush Misdemeanors is created by Kevin Iso and Dan Perlman, who play a couple of friends barely getting by in Brooklyn. 

Don Cheadle stars in Black Monday, about the historic stock market crash in 1987. Andrew Rannels and Regina Hall are also in the cast.  

A slew of returning series and the latest Marvel Studios-produced show highlight a busy week of show premieres.

On Sunday, Showtime will return two of its popular series Black Monday and The Chi, while HBO resurrects drama series In Treatment after an 11-year hiatus. Also, Netflix brings back a retooled version of its Emmy Award series Master of None. 

 On the premiere front, Hulu on May 21 will debut the latest Marvel-themed original series, Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K., an animated show that follows the exploits of a failed supervillain. Also on the 21st, Prime Video will premiere Solos, an sci-fi anthology series featuring a star-studded cast including Anthony Mackie, Uzo Aduba, Morgan Freeman, Anne Hathaway and Helen Miren.

Season three of comedy Black Monday, with Don Cheadle playing Wall Street hotshot Mo Monroe, begins May 23 on Showtime. About a motley bunch that causes a colossal stock market crash, Black Monday also has Andrew Rannells and Regina Hall in the cast. 

Cheadle, an executive producer, spoke about his various TV and film projects, including a redo of The Wonder Years on ABC. An edited transcript follows. 

B+C: For those who don’t watch Black Monday, why should they start watching?

Don Cheadle: I think it’s a very funny show. It’s a sitcom on cable, which is a rarity. It’s an excellent cast and a hilarious time to unplug your brain and just plug into some funny. And it’s good escapism. 

B+C: What drew you to the show in the first place?

DC: As always, it’s the material first. I read the script and it made me laugh. The characters were very surprising and different. It was subject matter that we’ve seen in films and always dealt with in a more serious way. To do it under the auspices of Seth and Evan [executive producers Rogen and Goldberg] and their insanity was a cool spin on material we’ve seen before.

B+C: The show is set in 1987. What makes it timely in 2021?

DC: The substantive similarities of what we are dealing with and what Wall Street deals with — guys with a robber baron mentality, win at all costs and fuck over whoever you have to, to get what you want — we can see in a lot of demonstrable ways how some of that hasn’t changed very much. It allows us to get a perspective on, and to play with, under the auspices of comedy, things like race, politics, power dynamics and gender dynamics. This has been going on since time immemorial and now we’re just starting to say, ‘Hey, maybe it’s not OK to embarrass me in front of the whole office and throw a book at my head.’ 

B+C: What will we see in the new season?

DC: The characters are all on their own trajectories and we’re gonna find our way back to one another. Dawn is in prison. Mo is trying to start this new company and Paul Scheer’s character, Keith, is ensconced with the Lehman brothers. We find Blair pursuing his political ambitions and being a complete sellout. 

We’re dipping into all it right off the bat and figuring out how these guys come together. That is very artfully done in a really interesting, plot-twist way. 

B+C: How much was COVID-19 an issue in production?

DC: Very much so, like it is everywhere. We’re getting tested every other day; everyone’s in masks and shields. As soon as you say ‘cut,’ everyone puts their masks on and shields up. It’s the third production I’ve done under these conditions and it’s just very bizarre. And very necessary. If we’re going to do it, this is the only way to do it. 

B+C: How many seasons do you see Black Monday going?

DC: Who knows? If there’s more to do and people are having fun, there’s always gonna be a place to go. There’s no dearth of problems with the financial sector to deal with. There’s a lot of room to play with, with these characters. 

B+C: What drew you to ABC’s The Wonder Years?

DC: Again, the script. The people behind it. And the opportunity to take this iconic story and these iconic characters and this part of quote-unquote Americana and look at another part of Americana that’s often not looked at and what it means for the wonder years of young Black kids and their friends in Alabama during this period. I think it’s just an interesting spin on that material. 

B+C: With all the characters you’ve played in TV and film, is there one that you find yourself coming back to more than the rest?

DC: I can’t pick one. I’m very fortunate in that I’ve been able to be in a lot of quality movies and TV shows, and theater as well. I’ve been very lucky to play a lot of interesting and rewarding characters, from Mouse [in Devil in a Blue Dress] — that’s one where you’re like, wow, that was cool to be able to do that with Denzel. Talk to Me, playing Petey Green. Paul Rusesabagina in Hotel Rwanda. Even Basher in the Ocean’s trilogy. 

I could go down the line. It’s hard to pick one. All of them, for different reasons, bring a smile to my face because of the experience, the people I got to work with, the project overall. 

We create these little nuclear families and then go off to the corners of the Earth. It’s cool to have had the ability to do that with so many talented people over the years. Thirty-plus years I’ve been doing it — I’m very blessed. 

Showtime Thursday released a video trailer showcasing the fourth season of its original drama series The Chi, which debuts on May 23, the network said.

The series, executive produced by Lena Waithe and Common, follows a group of residents on the South Side of Chicago who become linked by coincidence but bonded by the need for connection and redemption, said the network. The fourth season will look at the wide-ranging effects of policing in the Black community, said Showtime. 

The Chi's fourth season will premiere on the same night as the third season of Black Monday and the inaugural season of Flatbush Misdemeanors.

Showtime has signed actress Regina Hall to a first-look production deal, the network said Monday.

Hall, who currently stars in Showtime’s Black Monday series, will develop and produce television projects for the network under her production company, Rh Negative, said the network. Showtime has already announced a one-hour comedy special featuring Hall as star and executive producer. 

"Regina is an undeniable and brilliant force in Hollywood, both in front of and behind the camera," said Amy Israel, executive VP of scripted programming for Showtime in a statement. "She is one of the most dynamic and fearless actors of our generation and in her work on Black Monday, she hilariously destroys every scene she’s in. We are thrilled at Showtime to continue and expand our relationship with Regina as a producer and eager to get to work on what promises to be an ambitious slate.”

Added Hall: “I am excited to call Showtime home. Working with Amy has been such a delightful and organic experience. I am thrilled to expand our partnership to create smart, meaningful and impactful stories.” 

Showtime has picked up the third season of its comedy series Black Monday, the network said Thursday.

The series, which follows a group of underdogs causing the worst stock market crash in history, stars Don Cheadle -- who also serves as executive producer -- along with Andrew Rannells (Girls) and Regina Hall (Little, Girls Trip). The series will return in 2021 with 10 episodes, according to the network. 

Black Monday, a co-production between Showtime and Sony Pictures Television, is also executive produced by David Caspe (Happy Endings), Jordan Cahan (My Best Friend’s Girl) Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (Good Boys, The Boys).

The first week of summer will see the final season debut of OWN's Greenleaf as well as the return of CBS' All-Access' The Twilight Zone. 

OWN on June 23 will premiere the fifth and final season of its mega church drama Greenleaf, starring Keith David and Lynn Whitfield. The series finished its fourth season as the most watched original scripted series on ad-supported cable for African-American women and total viewers, according to OWN.

On June 25 streaming service CBS All Access will return anthology series The Twilight Zone for its sophomore run. The series, based on the 1960's series of the same name, is executive produced by Jordan Peele.

Showtime has released the premiere episode of its freshman comedy series Black Monday across multiple platforms, the network said Friday.

The series — which chronicles the 1987 stock market crash and how a group of outsiders took on the old-boys club of Wall Street to cripple the world’s largest financial system — premieres on Showtime Jan. 10, but the first episode is currently available on YouTube,Facebook and SHO.com, said Showtime.

Black Monday, created by David Caspe and Jordan Cahan, stars Don Cheadle, Andrew Rannells and Regina Hall. Caspe, Cahan and Cheadle serve as executive producers alongside Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. 

Showtime Friday provided a video sneak peek of its new comedy series Black Monday, which will premiere in January 2019.

The series follows the events leading up to and after the historical 1987 Black Monday Wall Street crash, according to network officials. The 10-episode series stars Don Cheadle, Andrew Rannells and Regina Hall. The 10-episode series was created by David Caspe and Jordan Cahan, and is executive produced by Cheadle and Evan Goldberg.
