Hulu is making a competitive challenge to Netflix and Amazon Prime Video in the standup comedy business, booking comedian Bill Burr’s next special.

A drop date hasn't been announced yet for the pre-recorded performance, which was already captured live at Seattle’s Moore Theatre in late June. 

Burr’s booking follows an earlier Hulu acquisition announcement of comic Jim Gaffigan’s special The Skinny, which debuts on the Disney-owned platform on November 22. 

Hulu is getting into a standup special business dominated in recent years by Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. Burr, for example, has released five prerecorded live comedy specials through Netflix, including the 2022 ensemble-performer-themed Bill Burr: Friends Who Kill. 

Gaffigan has also debuted five specials via Netflix, starting with 2009's King Baby. 

For its part, Netflix seems to sense the competitive pressure, and it's responding by marketing and streaming its specials, initially at least, as live events. 

Earlier this week, Netflix announced that the Joe Rogan special Burn the Boats will be streamed live from San Antonio on August 3. 

Netflix will debut an animated series based on the comedy of Bill Burr in 2015, the network said.

The six-episode series, F is for Family, follows the exploits of the Murphy family during the 1970's, according to company officials. Burr (pictured) will voice the role of family patriarch Frank Murphy, while Laura Dern will voice Frank’s wife Sue and Justin Long voices the family’s oldest son Kevin, acccording to the OTT service.

Burr will executively-produced the show along with Vince Vaughn (The Break Up, Couples Retreat), Peter Billingsley (Dinner for Five)and showrunner Michael Price.

“Bill Burr’s stand-up specials are wildly popular for us worldwide, and we’re looking forward to presenting his nostalgic and unflinching take on the family comedy in this original, animated series,” said Cindy Holland, Vice President of Original Content at Netflix in a statement

FX Networks has ordered a comedy pilot, Pariah, FX officials said Wednesday.

The series, which stars Bill Burr as a former TV personality exiled from show business and forced to survive without any real world skills, according to network executives. John and Dave Chernin (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) will write the pilot episode, which will be directed by Rob McElhenney.

Burr, the Chernins, Dave Becky, Michael Rotenberg and Nick Frenkel of 3 Arts Entertainment will serve as executive producers.

 “Bill Burr is a great comedic talent,” said Nick Grad, president of Original Programming in a statement. “Teaming Bill with Rob, Charlie and Glenn, along with John and Dave is a perfect recipe for a terrific comedy Pilot.”
