NBC will salute Betty White in a primetime special January 31.

The 10 p.m. ET/PT special, Celebrating Betty White: America's Golden Girl, will stream on OTT platform Peacock the following day.

The special will combine star tributes with clips. 

Among White's most notable TV credits was NBC's Golden Girls. She also appeared on the talk/variety Betty White Show, which aired on NBC in the early 1950s, and had a long-running role on NBC's coverage of the Rose Bowl parade, though she turned down a potential anchor spot on NBC's Today.

White died December 31 at age 99. She would have been 100 on January 17. ■

Betty White’s death on New Year’s Eve at age 99 is being celebrated for the comedic genius she infused in characters such as Sue Ann Nivens on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Rose Nylund on The Golden Girls and The Golden Palace and, more recently, Elka Ostrovsky on Hot in Cleveland (not to mention her fine dramatic turn as Catherine Piper on Boston Legal).

But then there was Betty White as her true self, in full glory as a TV game show contestant or panelist par excellence. It was in those settings that millions of Americans got a more unvarnished glimpse of Betty doing what she liked doing best since childhood — playing games.

She could discover someone’s occupation on To Tell the Truth, penetrate a disguise on Masquerade Party, reveal long-forgotten facts on Trivia Trap or pinpoint retail value on The Price Is Right. Betty White appeared on more than 50 different game shows during her career. Need an engaging guest for You Don’t Say!, Body Language or The Magnificent Marble Machine? Betty was only a phone call away.

She always came to play, participating with energy, focus, and charm. Her uncanny ability to adapt to such a wide variety of game shows demonstrated a great comfort with competition. Betty White was the Serena Williams of game shows, for sure.

Password held a very special place in her heart, since it was where Betty flirted on-air with the host, Allen Ludden, during her first appearance. That led to an enduring marriage that began in 1963 and a lifelong love affair that continued even after Ludden died in 1981.

On that show, she was equally adept at providing clues and receiving them from a fellow contestant so she could respond with the correct password. Quite impressive. Still, I remember that even Betty could slip up on occasion, and when she did, the studio audience roared with laughter as she mugged for the camera.

So when I last saw her in 2012 at the ribbon-cutting ceremony of The Museum of Broadcast Communications in Chicago, I stopped Betty in the lobby and blurted out the word she had inadvertently revealed on Password. She smiled and winked in response, clearly letting me know that she was in on the same joke.

And that word, which probably describes Betty White’s affectionate wit that we will remember so well? Racy — of course. ■

Shortly after the death of iconic actress Betty White was announced, CMT said it would run a marathon of The Golden Girls on January 3.

White played Rose Nylund on The Golden Girls. It was one of White’s best-known roles in a TV career that spanned seven decades.

“We are deeply saddened to learn about the passing of Betty White. She was an icon who blazed many trails - our hearts go out to her friends and legions of fans around the world during this difficult time,” CMT said in a statement.

CMT is part of ViacomCBS. White also starred in Hot in Cleveland, an original comedy series for Viacom’s TV Land that ran from 2010 to 2015.

CMT’s Golden Girls marathon will start at 9 a.m. ET on January 3 and run through 4 a.m. the following morning. ■

Betty White, who starred as Rose Nylund in Golden Girls and as Sue Ann Nivens in The Mary Tyler Moore Show, has died. She was 99.

Set to turn 100 on January 17, 2022, White's career spanned seven decades and included both TV and film roles.

According to TMZ, which first reported White's death, White died of natural causes at her home on December 31.

White appeared as the flighty Rose Nylund, who constantly told stories about her beloved hometown of St. Olaf, in four series: The Golden Girls (1985-1992) and spinoffs Empty Nest (1989-1992), Nurses (1991), and The Golden Palace (1992-1993). All four series aired on NBC. 

In The Golden Girls, White starred opposite Bea Arthur as Dorothy Zbornak, Rue McClanahan as Blanche Devereaux, and Estelle Getty as Sophia Petrillo. The four all lived in Devereaux's Miami house.

Before playing Nylund, White was known for her role as Sue Ann Nivens -- the host of WJM's "Happy Homemaker" segment -- in The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Her stint on Mary Tyler Moore led to White's own show The Betty White Show, which ran from (1977-1978).

Other notable TV roles include The Love Boat, Mama's Family, and most recently Hot in Cleveland. She got her first big TV break in 1952 playing Elizabeth in Life With Elizabeth.

On the big screen, White's turns included The Proposal and Lake Placid. 

White received numerous accolades during her career, including five Primetime Emmy Awards and two Daytime Emmy Awards. She has also been inducted into the Broadcasting + Cable Hall of Fame, the National Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame, and was a 2019 Brandon Tartikoff Legacy Awards honoree. ■

MeTV is celebrating Betty White’s 100th birthday with a batch of Mary Tyler Moore Show episodes featuring White. On the show, White played perky Sue Ann Nivens, star of The Happy Homemaker on WJM Minneapolis. 

The fun happens January 16, a day before White’s birthday. 

“Meeting Betty White in person was a bit like chatting with Sue Ann Nivens, the Party Aunt, and what Bette Midler will be like when she is 100,” said Neal Sabin, vice chairman of MeTV parent Weigel Broadcasting Co. “Betty is totally charming, very funny, a bit naughty and 100% delightful and original. We hope the MeTV viewers enjoy celebrating her birthday with these very special episodes just for Betty.” 

White earned two best supporting actress Emmys for her work on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, in 1975 and 1976. 

White was on that series 1973 to 1977. Her subsequent roles include Rose on The Golden Girls and Elka on Hot in Cleveland.

A classic TV network, MeTV’s celebration offers special Mary Tyler Moore episodes featuring White January 16 from 2-4 p.m. ET/PT. ■

The April 11 TV Land Awards special will honor late comedian Joan Rivers, the network announced Thursday.

The special, which will tape April 11 and air a week later on TV Land, Nickelodeon and NickMom, will honor Rivers with a special tribute, according to network officials.

The TV Land Awards will also honor Betty White, who will receive The Legend Award, as well as Donny and Marie Osmond, who will be accepting the Pop Culture Award, said the network.

Also receiving honors during the event will be hit series Parenthood (Fan Favorite Award), The Wonder Years (Impact Award)and Ally McBeal (Groundbreaking Award), TV Land said.

Actor Terry Crews will host the TV Land Awards, which will take place at the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills, Calif.

Actor Barry Williams (The Brady Bunch), will star in a new unscripted series for Great American Country launching next month.

The series, A Very Barry Branson, follows Williams as he goes to Branson, MO to launch a 1970’s musical variety show. The series premieres Feb. 5

Great American Country has tapped veteran actress Betty White to host a new animal-themed reality series.

The series, Betty White’s Smartest Animals in America, will debut Jan. 17th and will feature White as she encounters various animals and explores their unique skills, said network officials.

Betty White’s Smartest Animals in America joins a slate of original shows, including Off the Map With Shannen & Holly and A Very Barry Branson, profiling former The Brady Bunch star Barry Williams, said network officials.
