BET will bring back its drama series Tyler Perry’s Sistas for a third season on June 9, the network said Wednesday.

The series, which finished its second season as the most watched scripted series on cable for African-American viewers 18-49, will look to continue its ratings run with season three. The show’s March 31 season finale averaged 1.1 million viewers on a Nielsen Live+3 basis on BET and 1.3 million across BET and BET Her. 

Sistas follows a group of single Black females as they navigate their love lives, careers, and friendship through the ups and downs of living in a modern world of social media and unrealistic relationship goals, said the network. The show, executive produced by Perry, stars KJ Smith, Mignon, Ebony Obsidian, Novi Brown, DeVale Ellis and Chido Nwokocha.

Michele Thornton Ghee, the former senior VP at ViacomCBS's BET Her, has been named CEO of Bridgeman Sports & Media-owned Ebony and Jet magazines. Ghee, who was a MCN Wonder Woman in 2019, will be charged with creating the vision and activating the strategy for these iconic brands as she steers them into the 21st century, the company said in a release. The brand value proposition will be embedded in Information|Inspiration|Inclusion, it said.

"Everything we say will come through the lens of Black journalists," Ghee said in the release. "We will ensure there is a safe space for Black journalism to thrive. I'm a little Black girl from Oakland, CA. I'm not apologizing for any of it. Our voices matter. We are History in the making!"

Ghee's career in media marketing began in 2000 when she moved to New York City and obtained a position at The Weather Channel.  She progressed to positions at A&E, CNN and BET. She left BET in 2019 to join Endeavor Global Marketing. She also has developed her own self brand, Stratechic, which she has expounded on in books and in successful speaking roles.

Sunday night’s BET Awards 2020 telecast drew 3.7 million viewers across several ViacomCBS networks, including CBS, according to Nielsen.

The awards, which was held without an audience and featured artist-generated performances from such artists as John Legend, Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys and Megan Thee Stallion -- as well as appearances by Beyonce and Michelle Obama -- was simulcast on BET, BET Her and broadcast network CBS, which alone drew 1.9 million viewers.

Former Centric general manager Paxton Baker has been named managing partner of marketing and promotion company Liquid Soul, the company said Thursday (March 15).

Baker will launch the Washington, D.C., office of the agency behind the marketing and promotion of such blockbuster films as Black Panther and Wrinkle in Time as the 17-year old company looks to expand further into the political, sports and entertainment arenas, said company officials.

Most recently Baker served as executive vice president and general manager of the BET/Viacom-owned Centric network, which was renamed BET Her last year. Baker also serves as chair of the Founding Partners Group and is a minority owner of the Washington Nationals Major League Baseball team.

Paxton’s diverse experience and successful track record makes him a natural addition to our leadership team as we expand into new markets,” saidTirrell D. Whitley, CEO and founder of Liquid Soul, in a statement. “His deep understanding of the creative community, plus the breadth of his relationships in politics and sports, add an exciting new dimension to our firm.”

Entertainer Erykah Badu will return as the host for BET’s 2017 Soul Train Awards, network officials said Monday.

Badu will host the special, which will air on BET and BET Her on Nov. 26, for the third straight time, according to network officials. Other performers slated to appear on the awards show include Toni Braxton, SWV, Tamar Braxton, 112, Tank and Kirk Franklin. 

R&B singer Solange garnered seven Soul Train Awards nominations to lead all entertainers, with Bruno Mars following close behind with six nods. DJ Khaled, Rihanna and Bryson Tiller also received multiple Soul Train Awards nominations, according to BET.

Braxton will receive the Soul Train Awards’ Don Cornelius Legend Award, while female R&B trio SWV will be honored with the third annual Lady of Soul Award, said the network.

BET-owned network Centric will rebrand as BET Her today (Sept. 25) to better reflect its outreach to African-American female viewers.

Having initially launched as BET Jazz before rebranding to Centric in 2009, BET Her will look to superserve African-American women, who watch more television than any other demographic group and want to see their images reflected on the screen, according to BET Her senior VP of media sales Michele Thornton.

“There isn’t one place dedicated for black women to be entertained, inspired and empowered, and the BET Her brand defines that,” Thornton said. “BET is the biggest, most successful African-American network, and now her little sister is dedicated to black women in a really smart, fun way.”

Along with a new look and new logo, BET Her will add a new Sunday morning block featuring faith-based stage plays, as well as tentpole specials, including an October breast-cancer awareness special. The network will also bring back original series From the Bottom Up for a third season, Thornton said.
