Multichannel News' Senior Content Producer R. Thomas Umstead recently spoke with veteran actress Anika Noni Rose about her role in Showtime's vampire-themed series Let the Right One In, which also stars Demián Bichir and Madison Taylor Baez.

Best known as the voice of Princess Tiana in Disney's animated film The Princess and the Frog, the Tony Award-winning Rose has starred on TV (Power and Maid), film (Dreamgirls, For Colored Girls); and on Broadway (Caroline, or Change, Carmen Jones) throughout her more than 20-year entertainment career.

TNT Taps Anika Noni Rose for ‘Beast Mode’ Pilot

TNT has placed actress Anika Noni Rose in the lead role of drama pilot Beast Mode, the network said Monday.

The pilot, inspired by the life of legendary boxing trainer Ann Wolfe, stars Rose (The Quad,Power) as the mother of two who pulled her family from poverty, abuse, homelessness and criminality to reach the pinnacle of boxing as a fighter and as a trainer known for unconventional methods and a combative style, said TNT.

Beast Mode, produced by Wolfe and Marco in association with Studio T, is written and executive produced by David Schneiderman, along with Stefanie Huie, Charles King, Kim Roth and Poppy Hanks.

Forest Whitaker, Anna Paquin to Star in 'Roots'

A+E Networks has cast Forest Whitaker and Anna Paquin to star in its reboot of 1970s miniseries Roots, the company said Wednesday.

Whitaker (Lee Daniels’ The Butler) will star as Fiddler, a mentor to Roots main character Kunta Kinte in the mini-series remake, said network officials. Pacquin (True Blood) will play the wife of a Confederate officer who has her own agenda when it comes to the handling of slaves.

Also starring in the miniseries will be Jonathan Rhys Meyers (The Tudors) Anika Noni Rose (Dream Girls, The Good Wife, The Princess and the Frog), Chad L. Coleman (The Walking Dead, The Wire), Erica Tazel (Justified) and Derek Luke (Captain America: The First Avenger, Antwone Fisher)

Newcomers Malachi Kirby and Regé-Jean Page (Survivor, Waterloo) will star as main characters Kunta Kinte and Chicken George respectively, said A+E.

They new castmembers join previously announced Laurence Fishburne (Black-ish) as Alex Haley, the author of the novel Roots: The Saga of an American Family.

Starz In Black To Air ‘Half Of A Yellow Sun’ Movie

Starz has reached a deal with Monterey Media to air exclusively premiere the film Half of a Yellow Sun on the Starz In Black network Sept. 28, said the company.

Based on the award-winning novel by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, the film stars Thandie Newton (The Pursuit Of Happiness) and Anika Noni Rose (The Princess and the Frog) as two sisters from a wealthy Nigerian family who chose different life paths, according to Starz. The film also stars Academy Award winning actor Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Along with Starz In Black, the film will also be available on the network’s associated Starz On Demand and Starz Play online services, said network officials.
