AMC Networks said Monday that it has promoted Anne Kelly to executive VP and corporate secretary and Dawn Botti to executive VP, legal and business affairs, at its AMC Studios and Streaming Services. 

Kelly has been with AMC Networks for more than a decade and most recently was senior VP for corporate and securities matters and corporate secretary. In her expanded role, she will be responsible for all of the company’s corporate governance, securities and finance, compliance, cybersecurity, data privacy as well as other general corporate legal matters, and will oversee the company’s in-house lawyers and outside counsel relating to these areas.

Botti started with AMC Studios as an in-house lawyer and played a key role in the launch of the company’s premium streaming bundle, AMC Plus. In her new role she will continue to oversee all legal affairs for the company’s expanding AMC Studios operation, including all scripted development, production and co-production as well as worldwide content licensing. She will also have legal and business affairs oversight for the content and distribution of the company’s streaming services including Shudder, Acorn TV, ALLBLK and Sundance Now, as well as AMC Plus and the company’s growing portfolio of ad-supported VOD (AVOD)/FAST channels.

Prior to AMC Networks, Kelly was managing director, corporate secretary and assistant general counsel at Ambac Financial Group and earlier in her career was an associate at Hughes, Hubbard & Reed in the firm’s Securities and Merger & Acquisition Departments.

Before joining AMC Networks, Botti spent more than a decade at NBCUniversal, ultimately serving as the company’s senior vice president of business and legal affairs where she played a key role in the launch of Hulu. She was previously associate counsel at ABC Television and began her legal career in private practice with a focus on intellectual property litigation and transactional work; first at the law firm of Proskauer Rose, and later at Pryor Cashman.

AMC has greenlit a new drama series Dark Winds set to debut in 2022, the company said Friday.

The six-episode series, based on the Leaphorn & Chee book series by Tom Hillerman, is a psychological thriller that follows two Navajo police officers in the 1970s Southwest as their search for clues in a grisly double murder case forces them to challenge their own spiritual beliefs and come to terms with the trauma of their pasts. Zahn McClarnon stars in the series along with Kiowa Gordon. 

Dark Winds is expected to premiere on AMC Plus and AMC in 2022. Series creator Graham Roland also serves as executive producer for the series along with McClarnon, Vince Calandra, Chris Eyre, George R.R. Martin, Robert Redford, Tina Elmo and Vince Gerardis, said AMC.

AMC Networks and AMC Studios president of original programming Dan McDermott said the series features Native American actors and a writers’ room staffed entirely by Native American writers. The series was also filmed largely in and around Native American lands, with the full support and blessing of The Navajo Nation.

“We’re thrilled by the prospect of authentically telling this story with a group of remarkably talented individuals,” said Dan McDermott, president of original programming for AMC Networks and AMC Studios. “This is a rich and deeply unsettling psychological thriller set in a world we know viewers will appreciate experiencing for themselves.”

 Streaming service ALLBLK will produce a new family drama series from actor/producer Colman Domingo.

The series West Philly, Baby follows the journey of a Philadelphia family forced to grapple with their matriarch’s declining memory amidst uncovering long held family secrets that shake the foundation of their home. The series is based on the 2019 stage play Dot, produced by Domingo, who has starred in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, Euphoria and Fear the Walking Dead.

West Philly, Baby, part of Domingo’s first-look deal with AMC Studios under his Edith Productions banner, will be executive produced by Domingo and Alisa Tager, according to ALLBLK.

“We've had a long and very distinctive and successful partnership with Colman, going all the way back to Victor Strand and the first season of Fear the Walking Dead,” said Dan McDermott, president of original programming for AMC Networks and AMC Studios, in a statement. “West Philly, Baby is a project that is very personal to Colman, based on his award-winning play, and we are thrilled to bring it to the screen, initially on our ALLBLK streaming service, through his overall deal with AMC Studios.”

AMC has named former Fox broadcasting programming executive David Madden president of original programming for AMC, SundanceTV and AMC Studios.

Madden effectively replaces former AMC and SundanceTV president of original programming and development Joel Stillerman, who left AMC in May for Hulu. Madden was most recently president of entertainment for Fox broadcasting network.

“David Madden is a terrific, thoughtful person and a proven, tested executive. He’s known broadly not just for his leadership but also for developing and producing original programming alongside some of our industry’s most outstanding talent,” said Charlie Collier, president of AMC, SundanceTV and AMC Studios in a statement. “His rare and noteworthy success in this industry speaks for itself. He will have an immediate impact across our AMC and SundanceTV senior management team and, notably, our AMC Studios business as it continues to play an increasingly significant role for our networks and well beyond.”

Madden, who will start later this month, will be based in AMC’s Los Angeles office, where he will work closely with Susie Fitzgerald, executive vice president of scripted programming for AMC and SundanceTV; Kristin Jones, senior vice president of international programming development, acquisitions and co-productions for AMC and SundanceTV; and Eliot Goldberg, senior vice president of non-fiction and alternative programming for AMC and SundanceTV, and their teams.

Prior to Fox broadcasting, Madden was president of Fox Television Studios, which developed and produced programming for a variety of broadcast and cable networks in the U.S. and internationally.
