Hustle, an Adam Sandler movie that sees him play a basketball scout, premieres in “select theaters,” according to Netflix, June 3, and then on the streamer June 8. Sandler plays Stanley Sugerman, who scouts for the Philadelphia 76ers. Juancho Hernangómez, an NBA player, portrays Bo, a talented but troubled player in Spain that Sugerman brings to the U.S. 

“After discovering a once-in-a-lifetime player with a rocky past abroad, a down on his luck basketball scout (Sandler) takes it upon himself to bring the phenom to the States without his team's approval,” goes the movie’s description. “Against the odds, they have one final shot to prove they have what it takes to make it in the NBA.”

Rated R, the movie is a mix of comedy and drama. Jeremiah Zagar directs. 

Also in the cast are Queen Latifah, Ben Foster, Kenny Smith, Anthony Edwards, Jordan Hull and Robert Duvall.

LeBron James and Maverick Carter are producers, and the executive producers are Taylor Materne, Will Fetters, Judit Maull, Dave Meyers, Spencer Beighley, Jamal Henderson, Barry Bernardi and Kevin Grady. 

Sandler’s Netflix films include Uncut Gems, Hubie Halloween and Murder Mystery. ■

The true story of the New Orleans Saints coaches monetarily rewarding their players for injuring opponents will go down as one of the darker chapters of the National Football League, a cringy moment for a pastime that often over the decades has unfortunately skirted -- or passed -- the line from great American full-contact sport into ugly violence. 

Adam Sandler and his Happy Madison Productions, which somehow correctly, predicted that Happy Gilmore, skirting some of the same lines, would be a successful comedy 26 years ago, thought a story tied to "Bountygate" might make for comedy gold on Netflix. 

It didn't. 

The Netflix original movie, Home Team, starring Kevin James as Saints Head Coach Sean Payton, returning home while serving a year-long, league-imposed suspension a decade ago, and coaching his son's youth football team to Bad News Bears-like redemption, generated just over 21 million viewing hours on Netflix from January 28-30. 

In Netflix's recently launched Global Top 10 ranker, it finished second for the week in the English-language films category to romcom The Royal Treatment. 

The top show in all of streaming for the week was a non-English-language TV show, Korean zombie apocalypse original series All of Us Are Dead, which drew 124.8 million viewing hours to finish No. 1 globally, but only No. 4 in the U.S. overall. 

Among English-language TV shows, Ozark: Season 4 once again finished on top, garnering 96.3 million viewing hours. 

And in the fourth category ranked by Netflix, non-English-language film, Turkish drama My Father's Violin finished No. 1 with nearly 12.4 million viewing hours. 

Netflix and Adam Sandler have agreed to a deal involving four more movies for the comedian and his Happy Madison Productions outfit. Sandler’s Murder Mystery movie debuted in August, that one with Sandler as a New York cop and Jennifer Aniston as his hairdresser wife, on a yacht when a murder takes place. 

“Whether you know him as Sandman, the Water Boy, Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, Nick Spitz or simply Adam, one thing is clear: our members can’t get enough of him,” said Ted Sarandos, Netflix chief content officer. “They love his stories and his humor, as we saw with Murder Mystery. So I could not be more excited to extend our partnership with Adam and the Happy Madison team and deliver more laughs around the world.”

Later this year, Sandler will star in the Netflix family film Hubie Halloween along with Kevin James, Julie Bowen, Ray Liotta, Maya Rudolph, Rob Schneider, Kenan Thompson, Steve Buscemi, Michael Chiklis, Tim Meadows and Noah Schnapp.

Sandler starred in the drama movie Uncut Gems, which debuted on Netflix outside the U.S. Jan. 31. 

Other Sandler movies on Netflix include The Do-Over, Sandy Wexler and The Week Of, and the Sandler stand-up special 100% Fresh also appeared on the streaming platform. Netflix said it was the first Sandler stand-up special in 22 years.

Sandler’s other movies include You Don’t Mess with the Zohan, Billy Madison, Big Daddy and The Waterboy.

The comedian got his start on Saturday Night Live. 

“Our members love all things Sandler,” said Netflix. “They have spent a whopping two billion hours watching his films since 2015 -- the year that The Ridiculous 6 premiered -- proving there’s no such thing as too much Sandler.”

Netflix has come a long way since the 2013 launch of House of Cards, with the over-the-top service set to offer 475 hours of original programming this year, Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said.

Speaking during Netflix’s Television Critics Association tour session Monday, Sarandos said the OTT service, which only began offering original programming some 30 months ago, will have as many as 16 scripted shows, 12 documentary shows and 17 kids-targeted series on-air in 2015.

Netflix’s original programming has been nominated for 34 Emmy awards, he added.

Netflix’s decision to build on its originals slate rather than on acquisitions of established shows (similar to Hulu’s recent acquisition of Seinfeld) provides the company with more flexibility in scheduling and international distribution, he said.

Sarandos would not reveal viewership numbers for any of the company’s original shows, although he said its comedy series Orange Is the New Black – the first to be Emmy nominated in both the comedy and drama categories – is the most watched original on the service.

Netflix is still bullish on its four-film deal with Adam Sandler despite the soft opening of his latest theatrical film, Pixels, Sarandos said, adding that Sandler’s appeal is very strong internationally.

Sarandos also opined on other Netflix original content:

--He said there’s still an opportunity for Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen to appear in the OTT service’s Fuller House comedy series. The series re-unites most of the cast from the 1980’s Full House series except for the Olsen twins, who have previously said they would not appear in the reboot.

--Netflix will roll out a Marvel-themed series approximately every six months, including new seasons of current shows. The service has already announced a second season of Daredevil and will debut Jessica Jones later this year.

--Sarandos called “unfortunate” and “unfair” the controversy surrounding the filming of the Sandler-produced original movie Ridiculous 6 in which several Native American extras walked off the set due to what they felt as culturally insensitive script writing.  

“I think when people see Ridiculous 6 they’ll see the show speaks for itself in terms of its treatment of American Indians.” he said.

Netflix continues to make inroads into the film business, signing independent filmmakers Mark and Jay Duplass to a multi-film deal.

Netflix will finance four movies produced by the brothers, with each film debuting with a short theatrical run before hitting Netflix’s lineup, according to Deadline. Among the projects the brothers have directed and produce together or individually include film The Puffy Chair and TV shows Togetherness (HBO) and The Mindy Project (Fox).

The deal follows Netlfix’s four-film deal with actor/director Adam Sandler announced last October.

Netflix will stream four feature films starring comedian Adam Sandler as part of a deal between the two parties.

Under the deal announced today, Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions will work alongside Netflix to develop the four films and to premiere them exclusively to members in the nearly 50 countries where Netflix operates. Current studio film commitments are not included in this deal.

“People love Adam’s films on Netflix and often watch them again and again. His appeal spans across viewers of all ages -- everybody has a favorite movie, everyone has a favorite line -- not just in the US but all over the world,” said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos in a statement.

The deal comes on the heels of the OTT service’s agreement with The Weinstein Company to stream its first original filmCrouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend alongside the film’s distribution in IMAX theaters on Aug. 28, 2015.
