Aaron Silverman has been named executive producer on ABC News Live First. He comes from CNN, where he had been senior broadcast producer on CNN This Morning and New Day.

Almin Karamehmedovic, who was named ABC News president earlier this month, saluted Silverman in a note to staff. “Our commitment to covering every story on every device our audience uses to consume news is stronger than ever. With the upcoming launch of ABC News Live on the Disney Plus streaming platform, combined with our seamless collaboration with the network’s special events coverage -- as evidenced recently with the late-breaking ABCNL special report on the Israeli-Hezbollah strikes last Saturday -- and the addition of weekend hours, we are delivering for our audience, 24/7,” the note said in part.

“All of this makes it even more special to have Aaron join the talented ABC News Live team, working closely with [anchor] Diane Macedo. We look forward to the expertise and passion he will bring to our powerhouse streaming channel.”

Before his time at CNN, Silverman worked in local TV. After graduating from Syracuse, he produced morning news at KNDU Kennewick (Washington), then produced at KPTV Portland, KGTV San Diego and WHDH Boston.

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump have agreed to debates, set for June 27 on CNN and September 10 on ABC.

CNN Worldwide chairman and CEO Mark Thompson shared that both Biden and Trump had agreed to his network’s event at the Warner Bros. Discovery upfront presentation in New York May 16. That debate will happen in Atlanta.

CNN reported that Dana Bash, anchor and CNN chief political correspondent, and Jake Tapper, anchor and chief Washington correspondent, will moderate its debate, and David Muir, anchor of World News Tonight, and Linsey Davis, anchor of World News Tonight Sunday, will do so for the ABC News debate.

The Commission on Presidential Debates is not hosting either debate, as it traditionally does. The commission had scheduled debates for September 16, October 1 and October 9. The Biden and Trump camps are dealing directly with the networks.

The Biden camp wants the debates to happen earlier, The New York Times reported, and wants them conducted in a TV studio with no audience and with microphones that turn off when a speaker’s time limit elapses.

Trump said on Truth Social he agreed to a Fox News debate October 2, but the Biden camp said the president will take part only in the CNN and ABC News debates.

ABC News said it will make the September 10 debate available to simulcast on other networks.

Kim Godwin has stepped down as president of ABC News. Debra OConnell, president, News Group and Networks, Disney Entertainment, will oversee ABC News “for the time being,” she said in a memo to staff.

Godwin took over in May 2021. She said in a memo she is retiring from broadcast journalism.

“Kim has navigated this team through consequential times in our world, and she did so with respect for the brand and profession — and for that and more, we thank her,” said OConnell in the memo.

In February, OConnell was promoted from president, Networks and Television Business Operations, adding oversight of ABC News.

Godwin was executive VP of news at CBS News before moving to ABC News. Her status atop ABC News came into question in recent weeks.

In her note to staff, Godwin shared about starting out as a producer at WTXL Tallahassee, where she also was a reporter. “Little did I know then what extraordinary opportunities lay before me as I began to chart a path through a profession where very few women — and even fewer women of color — were in leadership roles,” she said. “So, I understood and appreciated the profound significance of being the first Black woman to lead a national broadcast news network when I accepted the role as president of ABC News a little over three years ago. It’s both a privilege and a debt to those who chipped away at the ceiling before me to lead a team whose brand is synonymous with trust, integrity and a dogged determination to be the best in the business.”

Her memo mentioned working at 10 stations and three broadcast networks. “After matriculating through j-school at my beloved Florida A&M University, I have been fortunate and blessed enough to have done almost every job there is in this business, including anchor, investigative reporter, news director, field producer, network/special events executive producer and more before moving on to the executive ranks,” she said. “Anyone who’s passionate about what we do knows there’s no other business like it, so this was not an easy or quick decision. But after considerable reflection, I’m certain it’s the right one for me as I look to the future and prioritize what’s most important for me and my family.”

Godwin thanked Dana Walden and OConnell “for always ensuring we had the resources and support to do our jobs,” and thanked ABC News “for the love, support and inspiration.”

WASHINGTON — Asked how important is local news, Martha Raddatz, who has covered foreign conflicts for decades and moderated presidential debates for ABC News, said today that, in fact, “it is the seed of everything.”

In a keynote interview at The Business of TV News event here, Raddatz told B+C Multichannel News senior content producer Michael Malone that her first reporting trip to Israel in 1988 was for WCVB, the ABC affiliate station in Boston.

“Local news is everything,” she told Malone. “It is what people should be watching. It is what they should be learning about their community. It is your place in the larger national and world picture. And that is where it begins.”

Read More: Coverage From the Business of TV News Event

Raddatz, co-anchor of ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos, gave props to David Muir, anchor of the network’s World News Tonight and a fellow WCVB alum. “He connects to people not only on a national level, but a community level, a local level,” she said. “Your audience is local, national and worldwide, but it starts local.”

Asked about her own work, she spoke with pride about The Long Road Home: A Story of War and Family, her book that became an eight-part scripted series for National Geographic TV. It chronicled the tragic experience of the U.S. Army soldiers who served during the siege of Sadr City in Baghdad, Iraq, in 2004. “I kept going back to the same unit in Iraq for their entire 15-month deployment,” she said, and also reported on the impact on their families back in the States.

This past April 4, she said, she attended a 20th reunion of survivors of the “Black Sunday” events and their families.

Related: Martha Raddatz, 2022 'Woman of Influence,' Stays In The Field

“Many I've stayed in touch with over the years,” she said. “And it was so powerful to see them. I think many of them have had real struggles. And as I said to all ofth'em, I think the courage it has taken to get you 20 years after that horrendous battle to where you are today and functioning and contributing to society is more courageous than what they actually did that very day.”

Asked by Malone if she was surprised when President Biden, who rarely gives interviews, went on the Howard Stern program recently, Raddatz said, "I was and I wasn't. Remember, [Biden's campaign] is now on TikTok, so he's clearly reaching out to younger voters. The bottom line for that interview is, look how many people listen to Howard Stern ... and the demographic of Howard Stern's audience. That's how campaigns choose where you'll go, what you'll do, whether you're going after mainstream media, whether you're going after younger voters. ... Whether or not it's successful, we'll see about that."

Raddatz was asked what advice she would give to an aspiring journalist. “Read history, study history, learn lessons from history, find journalists you think are journalists first,” she said.

Aspiring broadcast journalists might want to be on TV, she said. “But you are a journalist first. And remember that mission. And remember also that you are storytellers.” If a story seems unappealing, find a different approach to it. “But I think more than anything, find people outside your building to talk to. Don't just talk among yourselves about things.”

The Business of TV News was a daylong event produced by Future B2B’s B+C, Multichannel News and Next TV.

Former President Donald Trump has filed a defamation lawsuit against ABC News and George Stephanopoulos, host of This Week With George Stephanopoulos. On This Week March 10, Stephanopoulos asked Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) about endorsing Trump for president, and mentioned the 2023 court case involving Trump and E. Jean Carroll, who claimed Trump raped her. He said, “Judges and two separate juries have found him liable for rape.”

A jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse, but not for rape. The judge later said the jury’s findings established “the substantial truth” of Carroll’s allegations of rape. The judge added that the sexual abuse Trump was found liable for means Trump “in fact did ‘rape’ Ms. Carroll as that term commonly is used and understood,” according to CBS News.

Two juries awarded Carroll $88.3 million in damages.

Trump’s lawsuit accuses Stephanopoulos of acting “with actual malice or with a reckless disregard for the truth,” and claims the host “knows that these statements are patently and demonstrably false.”

An ABC News spokesperson did not comment.

George Watson, former ABC News Washington bureau chief and vice president, died June 1. He was 86. ABC News did not mention the cause of death, but said it was peaceful.

Watson was managing editor of The Harvard Crimson while at Harvard University, and got his master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University.

He arrived at ABC News as a radio news writer in 1962. He was a correspondent and bureau chief in Moscow and London, and his reporting for the 1971 ABC News documentary, Terror in Northern Ireland, won the Overseas Press Club Award for Best Foreign Affairs Documentary.

After returning to the United States, Watson was named ABC News’s White House correspondent. Soon after, he became Washington bureau chief and VP, a role he held two different times, spanning 12 years. He also worked as vice president in New York, where he was the first network executive responsible for overseeing policies, standards and practices for news programs, and developed and produced Viewpoint, which Ted Koppel hosted.

Watson spent a year at CNN when it launched in 1980 before returning to ABC News. It will air on the eight ABC-owned TV stations and stream on Hulu starting April 22, which is Earth Day. Promos for the series begin appearing Thursday.

The documentary series looks at how pollution, climate change and an aging infrastructure are making it harder to get safe drinking water in many American communities.

“Our America: Trouble on Tap is a powerful and thoughtful exploration of the growing issues surrounding Americans’ access to clean drinking water. The series brings together the talent and expertise of the amazing teams from ABC Owned Television Stations, National Geographic and ABC News with national and local experts and leaders to ask what we can do to solve these problems and protect the health of people across the country, said Debra OConnell, president, Disney Entertainment Networks. “I’m incredibly proud of the work these teams have done to bring this informative and timely topic to light.”

Data from the ABC Stations’ Data Journalism unit is used to show the severity of the contamination levels of water across the U.S.

“Issues around access to clean water vary across the country,” said Chad Matthews, president, ABC Owned Television Stations. “Our Data Journalism team is looking at information specific to local markets and working to help tell stories that offer viewers greater context and understanding around how water -- or lack of water -- may be impacting them. We focus on specific problems, possible solutions and tell the stories of those living it firsthand.”

Related: Hearst TV Eyes Changes in the Weather

The series’ first episode, “Life With Forever Chemicals,” looks at per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance contamination in North Carolina. Years after the contamination was first publicly revealed, the region continues to grapple with ongoing health concerns, multiple lawsuits, and constructing costly water treatment plants as it struggles to cope with decades of chronic exposure.

Episode 2 is entitled “Chicago’s $8 billion Water Problem” and will premiere in July. It examines water infrastructure and whether bills such as Senator Cory Booker’s Water Infrastructure Funding Act will help alleviate some of the financial strain on communities that are predominantly Black, Latino and indigenous.

The third episode will appear in August. “Drilling into California’s Water Crisis” focuses on the effects of drought. It checks in with a family in Orosi, California, whose water supply from the state is set to expire in four months.

In addition to co-producing Our America: Trouble on Tap, ABC News will have robust reporting for Earth Week, with network-wide coverage leading up to Earth Day.
Tamron Hall, Hall’s eponymous daytime talk show, has been renewed for a fifth season across the country, including on such television station groups as Cox Media Group, Gray Television, Hearst Television, Nexstar Media Group, E.W. Scripps Co. and others, Hall announced during the show on Thursday. Last year, the ABC Owned Television Stations Group gave the show a two-season renewal, taking it through next season.

Besides hosting, Hall executive produces the strip, which debuted in 2019, with Quiana Burns. The show is produced by ABC News and distributed in national syndication by Disney Entertainment.

“We are thrilled by Tamron Hall’s momentum in season four and can’t wait to see what the show brings in season five,” ABC News president Kim Godwin said in a statement. “Tamron is a daytime powerhouse, bringing heart and gravitas to every story and issue she covers and the people she profiles. Having our leading broadcast groups on board for next season is a testament to our continued successful partnership that is connecting with audiences across the country.”

Tamron Hall has averaged a 0.8 live-plus-same-day national household rating for the past five weeks, tying CBS Media Ventures’ Drew Barrymore for fourth place among the talkers. In the past season, Tamron Hall has hosted such guests as former First Lady Michelle Obama, Usher, Oscar nominee Angela Bassett, Melissa Etheridge, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Billy Porter and Tanya Tucker. Hall has twice won the Daytime Emmy for outstanding informative talk show host — after its debut season in 2020 and again last year.

“Having this incredible vote of confidence in the show speaks to the great work the THS team does every day,” said Hall in a statement. “Wherever I go, I hear from members of our loyal audience, known as the Tam Fam, about how they connect with our topics, our guests and our breakthrough moments with some of the biggest celebrities in the world.” ■

When the Biden administration was withdrawing troops from Afghanistan last summer, ABC chief global affairs correspondent Martha Raddatz remained until the very end. She’d been shadowing U.S. Army Gen. Austin “Scott” Miller in those final days, and she hitched a ride out with him on the last helicopter out of Kabul.

Just because Raddatz, who is being honored alongside the 2022 Multichannel News Wonder Women class as this year‘s Woman of Influence, has risen to high heights in the ABC News organization — she also co-anchors This Week with George Stephanopoulos on Sundays — doesn’t mean she’s interested in spending any less time reporting the news from field assignments, even dangerous ones. If anything, her perch at the organization gives her more freedom to do the in-depth, complex stories about which she’s so passionate.

Also: ABC‘s Raddatz: News Media Are ‘Team of Rivals’

“I love what I do, I love it. I love it today as much as I loved it when I first started doing it,” said Raddatz, who has done everything at ABC News from covering the Middle East to moderating presidential debates to interviewing voters at a Trump rally. “It’s a disciplined curiosity — if you don’t remain curious, you aren’t going to love your job. That’s part of who I am. I love seeing the world and I have just met such fascinating, interesting people. It’s a gift. My job is a gift.”

Dax Tejera, executive producer of ABC’s This Week, called Raddatz “relentless in all the best ways. She’s a partner to a producer like myself. She’s constantly bringing ideas to the table. For someone at her level with her level of experience, her desire to go out and tell the story wherever that may be — whether that’s wearing her global affairs hat or going out into the country to talk to voters — she never tires of it, she loves it. That’s a unique trait for someone who wears so many different hats.”

Learned on the Job

Raddatz earned her journalism education on the job while working at a local TV station. She was one of the only local correspondents in the country to cover a global beat, traveling overseas to cover wars and conflicts. It was while she was working as chief correspondent at WCVB Boston that she began what became career-long coverage of the Middle East, with a particular focus on Iraq and Afghanistan.

“I dropped out of college because I got a job at a local TV station, I had no idea what I wanted to do,” Raddatz said. “I’ve never been a person who was going to do this, that and the other. I wanted to succeed in my field and be a good journalist — journalism was always first for me, and TV was second. I always remembered that I was here to be a journalist and not just to be on TV.”

<img id="f3nEaiZm4sqpsoAZxU9z7a" name="BAC3885.SR_WonderWomenNY.Bush.jpg" alt="Martha Raddatz interviews former President George W. In fact, she returned to work just two weeks later.

As with all women who have engrossing careers and also have families, balance wasn’t really on the table. It was more about managing risk and staying in close communication with her kids about what she was doing.

“My family, without question, my children and my husband, are of primary importance to me and what I can contribute is an understanding of conflict,” she said. “Maybe the balance is letting your kids know why you do what you do. I don’t cover wars because it’s a cool thing to do or to say, ‘Aren’t I brave?’ I cover wars so I can let people know what the cost is, so people will understand it more. The more my kids understood it, the more they accepted it.”

Raddatz was raised by a single mom after her father passed away just shy of her third birthday.

“My mother always said she was born 20 years too early,” Raddatz said. “She worked as a secretary and she raised two little girls by herself with zero help. Seeing what my mom did and knowing that my mom felt held back because she was a woman — we talked about it all the time, probably a little too much. Somehow that seeped into me. I thought, ‘By God, I’m doing to do whatever I want and never let being a woman stop me.’  ”

Setting No Limits

That work ethos has framed Raddatz’s career as she’s covered fields of conflict all over the world. From WCVB, Raddatz went to NPR, where she was the Pentagon correspondent from 1993-98. She joined ABC News as the State Department correspondent in 1999 and moved to national security correspondent in 2003. She also served as the network’s chief White House correspondent during the Bush administration. She was named senior foreign affairs correspondent after President Barack Obama was elected in 2008.

“If there’s a major story in the world, she gets to go first if she wants to go and to stay longer if she wants to,” Byron Pitts, co-anchor of Nightline and chief national correspondent for ABC News, said. The two have worked together on and off since they were both correspondents at WCVB in 1989.

“When January 6 happened, Martha raised her hand like anybody in the D.C. bureau,” Pitts said. “One could make the argument that with her stature at this stage in her career, she could have offered context about that important story from her studio. But she wanted to be there in the mix-up. Some people in our business build their professional tan from studio lights. Others build their professional tan from the sun that shines around the world.”

Martha Raddatz on the set of ABC's 'This Week.' (Image credit: ABC/Pawel Kamiski)

Today, Raddatz says that while there are more women on the global-affairs beat, it can still be a challenging place for women, especially in countries where equality for women is not a priority.

Also: Martha Raddatz‘s ‘Long Road’ to Scripted Television

“I still find myself in corridors of power where there are not a lot of women,” she said. “I’m not talking about my business or ABC, I’m talking about the places I cover. While there are many incredibly talented war correspondents out there, they are still largely men. And early on, when I went in with ground troops, there weren’t a lot of women with me.”

Earning Role-Model Status

As a result, Raddatz has served as an inspiration for many up-and-coming female journalists.

“Martha is someone I have always looked up to,” Rachel Scott, ABC News congressional correspondent, said. “I looked up to her long before I had an opportunity to meet her. I remember watching her press world leaders in some of the world’s most dangerous areas and provide context and analysis.

“When I first moved down to D.C., I had a big lump in my stomach about meeting her,” Scott said. “It made me so nervous. When I finally did meet her, she stopped me in the hallway and said, ‘Rachel, it’s so good to have you here in the newsroom, you’re doing great work.’ Since then, I have no idea why I was so nervous about meeting her. She is one of the kindest people I have ever met.

“She’s a mentor to so many young women coming up behind her,” she added. “No matter how high she climbs, she never forgets to reach back and pull others up with her.”

Martha Raddatz reports from Yemen. (Image credit: ABC News)

The current challenges Raddatz and her cohorts face are the constant attacks on journalists by those who would prefer them to relay a different narrative.

“The whole idea of fake news and the idea that the press is the enemy of the people is horrifying,” Raddatz said. “We as journalists continue to do our jobs and tell the truth and call out lies. It’s at the heart of what we do. It’s not opinion, it’s trying to find the truth and calling out those who are not.”

In the end, Raddatz feels hopeful about the role of journalism and its place in American democracy.

“I am optimistic about the news,” she said. “I think in so many ways that the charges of fake news and that the press is the enemy of the people has just made journalists that much more hard-core. Do-or-die journalists are just doubling down and saying ‘this is what I was born to do and I’m going to do it better than I ever have.’ ”

Those hard-core journalists have Raddatz to thank for paving the way. ■

Sherwood soon became Weinberg’s boss and a mentor. “She really helped me become a senior producer,” Weinberg recalled. “She just kept pushing me. ‘I think you can do that,’ she would say. I learned so much from her. I think a lot of women would say the same thing.”

Under Sherwood, Nightline had more women senior producers than it ever had before. Sherwood said promoting women happened naturally on her watch. “There were so many talented women,” she said. “We’ve had a lot of conversations about being seen and heard and making sure everybody’s getting a fair shake.”

Now Sherwood is spearheading ABC News efforts to support The Walt Disney Co.’s streaming business, providing longform content for Hulu. That’s where Sherwood’s series Mike Tyson: The Knockout and 24 Hours: Assault on the Capitol can be found.

An Impactful Storyteller

“Not everyone is cinematic in their thinking,” said Alan Ives, senior VP of marketing at ABC News. “Rox would never serve vanilla ice cream.” Sherwood still rolls up her sleeves and pulls all-nighters to get shows like Assault on the Capitol on the air, Ives said.

“Do we have the ability to make a cultural impact with the story? Move this conversation forward?” Sherwood said. “If the answer to that is yes, I’m going to throw myself into it.”

Sherwood’s colleagues say her drive is all the more remarkable as a single mother. Of course, that’s a great story. Sherwood married a man from Costa Rica. She returned from their honeymoon, but he had been in the U.S. on an expired visa and was held by immigration. She discovered she was pregnant and he didn’t get a new visa for eight years. She had to raise their son on her own.

How did she manage? “I’m a producer. I set things up. I EPed our life,” Sherwood said. She worked long hours. “I think my son definitely suffered for that,” she said. But he also got to watch her set an example of succeeding through hard work. “He can say, ‘Look at my mom. She’s the boss.’  ” ■

Quiana Burns has officially been named executive producer of Disney’s daytime syndicated talk show, Tamron Hall, ABC News President Kim Godwin said Wednesday. Burns has been serving as interim executive producer since October, after the departure of Candi Carter.

Burns comes to the show from ABC News, which she joined in May 2020 as executive producer of ABC’s Weekend Good Morning America. Burns previously worked with Hall as executive producer of MSNBC's Live with Tamron Hall. While at MSNBC, she also executive produced Live with Ali Velshi and helped launch The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell. Prior to that, she was Robin Roberts’ anchor producer on ABC’s Good Morning America.

Burns replaces Candi Carter, who joined Tamron Hall from ABC’s The View in March 2020, just as the country went into lockdown due to the pandemic. Carter departed Tamron Hall in October 2021 and took a first-look development deal with ABC.

Carter had taken over after founding executive producer, Bill Geddie, who also created and executive produced The View, officially left the show in March 2020. Tamron Hall debuted in broadcast syndication in September 2019. ABC renewed it through the 2023-24 TV season in November.

In the week ended February 6, Tamron Hall tied NBCUniversal’s Maury and Debmar-Mercury’s Wendy Williams as the sixth-highest rated talk show in syndication, up 14% for the week to a season-high 0.8 live plus same national household rating, according to Nielsen Media Research. ■

Burns will only stay at Tamron Hall until a permanent replacement can be found. Burns and Hall previously worked together at MSNBC.

Prior to the start of this season, the show’s third, Tamron Hall moved from under the auspices of ABC Entertainment to ABC News under ABC News President Kim Godwin and her team, who also oversee GMA.

Carter came to Tamron Hall from ABC’s The View in March 2020, just as the country was locking down because of the coming pandemic. The Daily Mail and other sites have reported that Carter requested to be taken off the show because she could no longer work with Hall. Carter took over after founding executive producer Bill Geddie departed in March 2020, a little more than one year after being hired. At that time, Talia Parkinson-Jones, who was initially hired as Geddie’s co-executive producer, also left the program.

Hall left NBC News and MSNBC in 2017 after the network canceled the third hour of Today, which Hall co-hosted with Al Roker, and replaced it with the ultimately short-lived Megyn Kelly.

In the week ended September 19, Tamron Hall averaged a 0.7 live plus same day national household rating, according to Nielsen Media Research. That’s down 13% compared to the same week one year ago, although up 17% in households and 7% in total viewers compared to the prior week when the show was in end-of-season repeats.

She alleges that Corn assaulted her during a business trip in 2015. The suit also alleges Corn sexually assaulted former ABC News producer Jill McClain when McClain and Corn worked together at ABC's World News Tonight.

According to the WSJ, ABC officials were informed about Crawford's complaints in 2017. An investigation into Corn was started this year after Crawford and McClain filed formal complaints to the network.

Crawford is seeking unspecified damages.

In the suit, she alleges that she and Corn were covering the Academy Awards in Los Angeles. On the way back to their hotel after a party, she says Corn was intoxicated and forcibly touched her, kissing her head and rubbing her legs and telling her he wanted to help her with her career, the paper said.

When they got to the hotel, Crawford went to Corn’s room because he asked for Advil. He asked her to sit on his bed. When she did, he grabbed her arm and began kissing the top of her head, the paper said, citing the suit.

In the statement sent to the paper, Corn cited emails Crawford sent to him he claims prove the alleged incident didn't occur.
